Is Picard the best Captain on any vessel ever?
So is he going to time-travel back into Star Trek Discovery in an attempt to save that show, or what ?

Well it's not a bad show per se, it's just not a good Star trek show.

I actually liked the first 3 episodes. Then I got a little bored but still watched a few more. I just quit after I finished season 1. It just got more predictable and cliche-driven as time went by. I am aware of the change of writers and I guess the new batch of writers had a tough job but still it ended up doing nothing for me.

It's prolly the first most people have watched. It is very optimistic and I love it for that and mainly for Picard being awesome.
The best Star Trek show that I've watched (I've watched all of Next generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, a few seasons of Enterprise with Archer I believe, and a bit of Original Series) and I've got to say that Deep Space 9 is by far the best out of them all in my eyes. Some amazingly written and acted episodes, a great captain, and a much more grim and realistic picture of Star trek.
I still remember The VIsitor (for some reason that one really hit me hard), Duet, In the Pale Moonlight, Far beyond the stars...
Recently I finished watching Babylon 5, after you drag your way through the first season (which I really didnt have any problems watching, apart from the shock of getting through the first episode with Garibaldi's and Sinclair's stiff acting) the show picks up big time, and is a great example of how to do big story arcs right. I was really pleasantly surprised how good it turned out to be...
Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar and Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari are pretty much the highlight of the whole series for myself and many others, given their character development and superb acting.
Sorry for the wall of text, I just felt like expressing some love for both franchises. :D

Yeah, that is prolly cause JMS wrote pretty much every episode and had it planned out from the start I believe. It would prolly be even better if they didnt have the whole "we're gonna cancel you after 4th season" but ended up having a 5th season anyways.
Anyway, great show, up there with Battlestar Galactica as well.
In recent years The Expanse is a frakking (to borrow some vernacular from BSG) awesome though I've yet to watch the 3rd season.

Later episodes jokes have been tuned down a little, and it started to become just f'ing perfect. It even felt more like Star Trek than most Star Trek shows do.

Omg yes. John de Lance would return in a heartbeat. @.@

Tribbles weren't annoying?
"Red-shirts" dying on every away mission wasn't annoying?
William... SHATNER'S... ridiculous overacting... and STRANGE pauses... when he... spoke... wasn't ANNOYING?
The only way to tell Klingons from anyone else was that Klingons had beards. That wasn't annoying?
Star Trek: The Motion Picture wasn't annoying?!

Not as annoying as:
Q, Deanna's mother, Wesley Crusher, a whiny Klingon, an empath who can only get other people's feelings when they're obvious, and the only character who actually made the show worth watching, Tasha Yar, getting killed in a meaningless way (and the script going on about how meaningless it was). (Sorry, that was an unintended insult to Guinan, who was certainly an enjoyable character, though couldn't make up for the rest of the cast.)
Long shots of conference room discussions moving from face to face.
Everything ending up being meaningless, random, or just a misunderstanding.
Entire episodes spent in the holodeck.
And lots of other stuff that had to do with bad writing.
Sure, the later seasons picked up a bit (the Borg were neat), but not enough to really elevate TNG in my mind from the 'annoying' niche.
That said, I did enjoy First Contact quite a bit. Would be interesting to see it again to see how it holds up.
...
Edit: And regarding the annoying stuff in the original series, well, no, that wasn't at all annoying. Sure, not every episode was great, the acting could be hammy and the Styrofoam rocks were amusing, but the series carried itself well. ST:TNG was simply a mess in the first seasons.

When you need a character in the show who is literally God, to pull you off with deus ex machinas every time you write yourself in the corner and you need that tool so often he is actually a main character to regularly do that… and when you managed to start a meme of incomprehensible and random technobabble to write yourself out of everything else… then yes, the show is a mess, even if it has memorable and great characters.

It is generally most beloved in spite of it being a mess, not because of it.
OS: old as hell, cheesy etc (I havent watched it all yet so cant comment on the whole run), Voyager - kinda shit also cause of some bad writing, not very interesting characters, generally alright but not as good as TNG or DS9, DS9 - some of the best Sci fi on screen (at least that I know of), maybe people were put off by it being on a space station and therefore havent given it a chance, even though it might be the best of them all.
Many people were mostly likely first introduced to TNG so that will always be a big plus in their eyes.
It had freakin Picard as a captain who's awesome, wise, and has amazing monologues/dialogues whatever. I know I always enjoyed different philosophical views that were being expressed and tackled in the show, even though compared to DS9 it was a bit subdued, and everything was a bit too optimistic...
I love it a lot, and it was the first one I saw on TV when I was a little kid, but it definitely had a ton of shitty moments.
I actually liked watching the Luxana Troy episodes where Picard was always trying to avoid her lol. :P
Also, Q is awesome. :D

I tried to defuse their topic with my reply. ;)
DS9 is my favorite as well, mostly because of the fantastic setup and chemistry between the characters.
Yet when I remind myself about the most unique and memorable episodes, TNG wins by far. Just play that song from The Inner Light and you'll have me tear up in few seconds. Always, till the end of times.

I prefer the directors cut version:

Besides a few episodes with Riker, all top episodes are with Picard in the main role, at least the ones i remember. The other characters just really didn't develop well enough in my opinion.
Not sure if that's "a mess" though.

I listed a few episodes from DS9 in another comment:
The Visitor - I cried watching that shit, Tony Todd did a wonderful job in that episode. I think he mentioned that his nan died shortly before doing that episode which made him decide to do it...
Duet -Two amazing scenes between Kira and the Cardassian who wasnt really the murderer he was making himself out to be...),
In the Pale Moonlight - I think thats the one where Sisko agrees to let a man die to ensure Romulan support in the war..
Far Beyond the Stars - tackled racism from what I remember...Anyway amazing scene
And a few from Star Trek:TNG:
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra
SHAKA WHEN THE WALLS FELL!
Any episode where Picard drops knowledge bombs. :D
Yeah, The Inner light episode was pretty awesome from what I remember. :)
