Hello SG!

A shout out to all Linux gamers on SteamGifts, I started a Steam group targeted specifically at Linux game giveaways. There are already some GAs running and more to come soon, feel free to jump in!

Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/linuxga
SG: https://www.steamgifts.com/group/q3vMa/linuxga

At this point please don't send a join request if Linux is not your main gaming platform. I'd like to accept as many people as possible if they're honestly interested in Linux gaming but for now we don't have any tools for that so I only accept obviously Linux-ish profiles. Thanks for understanding!

Do you have Linux installed on your personal computer?

No, never tried it

I'm currently playing on Linux only. I won't have windows until I get a new desktop, which, well, could be a while.

I asked for membership. My main computer(s) both here and at work are on linux. I also have a laptop who dual boots windows for the cases where wine is not sufficient (did it for walking dead recently, but that's it)

Hi pb1, I'm not sure your goal here, but have you heard of Linux Users Exclusively?

You are openly accepting Windows users ("If you dual-boot or play a lot of games in wine...") so you may be trying something similar to the open group We only buy Linux games which also accepts Windows users (as my early GAs, unfortunately, proved)

LUE has a scanner tool that calculates play time of Linux titles vs non, if members are under a certain threshold they automatically get kicked. One of the biggest hurdles in getting more games to come to Linux is the dual-boot/WINE crutch. It's a catch-22, if we purchase Windows games, there will never be a reason to port games to Linux.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread so if you feel that I am, let me know and I'll delete this comment.

Well, as you said, the group "We only buy Linux games" is open, so anyone can join, which defeats the purpose (which is to give the games to people who are going to play them on Linux). "Linux Users Exclusively", while sounds pretty good (the scanner part) will exclude users who switched recently as they may have lots of hours played on Windows from earlier games (when manually verifying join requests I saw profiles with for example lots of hours in Skyrim but last played a few years ago). So to sum up, the group does overlap with other Linux-focused group but not 100%. Honestly I don't know if it's needed, or if it will be appreciated, it's just an idea from reddit that I brought to life. Ultimately it will be up to the community how the group evolves (if at all). Anyway, thanks for bumping the thread and feel free to join! ;-)

That all makes sense. We have tried to figure out how best to address recent "converts" ... it takes too many connections through the Steam API to check dates so LUE doesn't have a more viable option. Manually monitoring a (hopefully) large group will be quite tedious. I will join & contribute ... good luck!

Cool group for sure! I currently dual boot Win7 for gaming, but I'd like to ditch MS completely at some point so maybe I'll join sometime in the future. Anyhow thanks for making this and good luck, I'd love to see Linux compatibility catch up to Windows.

Yay! More fragmentation.
I may have some history of trying to make this a thing, before losing steam, so consider me interested in how this group fares.

EDIT: Nope, that striking similarity to an older comment is purely coincidental.

Wow, that's some perseverance! Let's hope that with the group in place it will be slightly easier to keep the momentum. :-)

I use both OS for work and games. On my desktop and on my work computer, i have windows and, on my laptop I have RHEL7 on which I have played some games like Fez, Kindom: Classic, Epistory and will be more.

looks like you'll qualify with an avatar like that :)

Do you purchase your games through Steam? If so, when you buy, do you do it on your Linux OS? I think dual-boot users should make a point to buy the games on Linux, even if it's a Windows only game. From what I have read, this is the only real feedback developers get about OS demand.

Left microspysoft some weeks ago. Currently playing Borderlands 2. There are some frame drops here and there. It seems my dedicated amd gpu is not detected by linux :(
Dropped a message here to know whether I am welcome to this group.

I'm sorry you feel that way, I rejected your request because nothing on your profile indicates that you're a Linux gamer, quite the contrary. Most of the requests are from people who don't even bother to read the intro, so there are and will be some false negatives. Your message would be enough to add you, but after rejection you can't apply again and adding you manually would require sending a friend request, which you strictly forbid, so... bye, I guess.

Half of your profile is hidden (last played / most played games) and your featured review is a Windows game. Ctrl+f "linux" didn't give a single result. If you don't care to make it easy for me to recognise you as a Linux gamer, I don't see a reason to accept your request. You can call it elitist, I call it Ockham's razor.

Sorry but it was in April so I don't remember, possibly your profile was private?
Anyhow I think we need to amend the rules now that SteamPlay/Proton is a thing, can't really tell by just the games played...

Hi, I've seen you've been online many times since and waited patiently for a reply. I think 4 months (from when I originally applied) is pretty patient haha, and I never had a private profile tbh, I think my profile just didn't yell I was linux enough. You can look at all my games played and apart from a few achievement spam games I've managed to get working on wine, they're all linux games. I haven't used the new steam play yet (as you can see). I applied long before the rule change that I see you just added, probably when I asked again why I was declined. Would be great if you could respond! :)

Do I qualify? As you can see from gaming times, my "online gaming" is mostly from Linux titles, but again like you can see from game titles, I'm also playing in Windows in offline mode.

Hey, great to see Linux dedicated groups here... Can I join?

I use Linux exclusively since 2014, sadly, I don't do much gaming lately due to the complicated situation in my country that left me no time to play videogames (most of the time I have to look for work and bring food to the table)... Anyway, I am fairly active in Steam discussions asking developers to support Linux natively (e.g.: https://steamcommunity.com/app/812550/discussions/0/1729827777337429922/ or this other one: https://steamcommunity.com/app/599080/discussions/0/1732088458074613388/ ) ... other times I've commented about the good things Linux bring to the table, like here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/304430/discussions/0/357288572134883491/?ctp=31#c1734343428037079917

Accepted or not, I'm glad to see groups like these!

What's a "linux-ish" profile? Ehehehe!

Not requesting to join though since I'm a much-hated mac user, and never use Linux for gaming. I do like the idea of having groups for "minority OS" gamers though.

I think with the release of Proton, you guys might not have to worry too much about this in future. We're still stuck with WINE. XD

since I got my new laptop 3 years ago, I decided to use only linux.... and never looked back since except for very specific software that don't run under WINE (I'm looking at you GameMaker), but I prefer to not use them than reboot on windows. :D
Even Hitman 2 and The Witcher run really great under WINE, so windows is only at work now.

Hello, to be honnest I'm interested by the group because I work and play on Linux. I still have a GPU passthrough VM for games with some bad anticheat but for now I surprise myself to launch the game that work directly thought Steam natively or by Proton. I'm also a big reader of GamingOnLinux, I check pretty much each day if there are no new articles.

I read the rules on Steam and I must say that I not really think "is this game on Linux?". When I see a game that I can like I take it because I will maybe like it.

I sent a join request but I will understand if I'm refused because I will not avoid games that not have Linux support when I can like them.
Anyway, thanks for the reading and "Linux power!" ^^
