Time for another UFC prediction event Here’s the last one for reference - Please note, there's a slight change to the last event as I've combined the KO and TKO options into one .

This Saturday, April 27th, at 5:30pm ET - UFC Fight Night 150 will begin (early prelims 5:30pm Prelims 7pm, main card 9pm)
Countdown to preliminary fights

How to enter/Rules

  • Use the formatted table below with a list of scheduled fights.
  • Choose a winner in ALL 10 FIGHTS
  • Choose the method by which they will win (KO=knockout/technical knockout, SUB=submission, or DEC=judges decision)
  • Post your predictions below
  • You can reply to your own submission to change it, but changes or submissions made after the scheduled start of the preliminary fights will not be counted (I have a add-on that lists the time of any edited posts so it's easy to check)
  • Last minute change of fighters or cancellations will mean that fight does not count in the contest (e.g Ronaldo Souza can't fight and is replaced by another fighter, so the result of fight 13 will be ignored and the winner will be chosen based on the other predictions). I will try to keep on top of this and post any news as I find it leading up to the event so you can change your predictions in time.

Prizes

I will add the overall winner on Steam and send a game directly, so winning is based purely on your ability to predict the fights or luck in predicting them.

  1. 1st place The person with the most correct predictions will receive a game from their wishlist (must have been added before 26th April). If you have no wishlist or they're all expensive games, I'll contact you to work out another prize. Similar deal if multiple people get the same number of predictions and there's a tie for 1st. I'm not rich!
  2. Runner up Slight change from last time when I gave out a few keys. My library of bundle keys is running dry but hopefully I can still provide a couple of runner up gifts. I'll try and find something from your wishlist or games similar to ones you like. Worst case scenario, I'll create a private giveaway for people who entered.

How to Watch

Not a pay-per-view event this time. I think it's being broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ in the U.S. If you want to check how to watch in your country, try this page and alter the country in the top right of the page.
You may be able to find another method of watching online, but I am not condoning or encouraging any kind of illegal activity!
Alternatively, soon after the event (or sometimes after each individual fight) you can probably see some of the highlights on sports news sites, or via clips and gifs on sites like the MMA subreddit.

Fingers crossed I haven't made any mistakes in this wall of text!

Edit - All fighter have weighed in and it seems there will be no changes to the card
Edit 2 - Time difference will stop me from updating picks for a while as I'll be asleep! I'll get up to record any new predictions and acknowledge them before the event starts.

Results

Close event with a lot of people choosing 8 winners correctly. I got together prizes for the top 5 people and have sent gifts or added them on steam. Apologies for those who were just out of the top 5. There wasn't much between the first 10 people, but I had to stop somewhere!

There were only 3 things I felt were definitely going to happen this event and that the Court McGee/Dhiego Lima and the Angela Hill/Jodie Esquibel fights were going to end in a decision and that Greg Hardy was going to win either by a KO or TKO in the first round. I had to say the event was much better than I thought it was going to be.

I would also like to add, THANK YOU so much for doing this. I had no idea that there were fellow fight fans here at SG. Its also super cool of you to offer up prizes, I am currently out of all keys but when I get some I'll save a few to contribute to the runners up prize pool.

There are some good fights on this card but there are also some "filler" fights but now I will be heavily invested in all of them and I sincerely thank you for that.

Good luck everyone, enjoy the fights tomorrow

Thanks for the offer of the runners up keys too :)

I think some people aren't fight fans and just guess, but there are some fans here. I'm pretty irregular with these events, tend to do the non-pay-per view events so more people can watch and only when I have the time to set it up and monitor changes to the card and record/check the entries. Also can't do it too often as I'd end up spending a lot!
Have thought about setting up a different format and doing it more regularly, but not happened yet....maybe one day!

Arlovski and I were robbed by the judges. ;-P
Personally, I think Lineker beat Sandhaven, too, but I can understand some judges valuing volume over damage. I prefer the Muay Thai style judging that doesn't value punches anywhere near as highly as kicks, knees, elbows, or clinch dominance, and I thought that Sandhaven's rangefinders (he landed some good shots but most were not) were less impactful than the ripping hooks that welted his body up.
They really need to educate their judges better when almost half (3 out of 8) decisions are split (and this is not unusual). They are all judging based on the same criteria, so a split decision means that at least one judge made an error so large that it changed the outcome of the fight. In particular, I wish someone would tell them that a wrestling takedown is nowhere near as impactful as a strike that scrambles your brains enough to temporarily disrupt your ability to stand, especially when they take someone down and fall straight into their guard - it's arguable that the top position is not the dominant one because bottom position has control of the top position's hips (in submission grappling and BJJ, you get more points for passing the guard than you do for the takedown).
Did you see any of the Bellator card? Main event was alright but judging was terrible (Big John McCarthy in commentary knows what's what - you can trust his scoring because he literally created the sport) and the post-fight interview was a little sobering.

I agree that the judges need to be more consistent and it would be better for the sport if the criteria was clearer. I'm sure that the judges receive clearer guidelines than the "scoring is based on effective striking and grappling, followed by aggression and Octagon control, in that order" that is read out for the audience, but I'm not clear on how the local athletic committees who assign the judges train them exactly. There have been some terrible decisions in the past and I agree the worst decision on this card was the Arlovski fight - he was robbed. He's had a very bad run in the last few years and deserved a win.
Sandhagen vs Lineker - I would have gone with Sandhaven, but I'm not a trained judge! :P As I watched it, I felt Lineker was throwing much harder strikes, but landed less and and times was swinging wildly at air. When, at the end of each round, there's little difference between the visible damage on the two fighters I can see them siding with the fighter who landed more. Neither fighter looked to be in trouble or rocked at all during the fight. Based on the Muay Thai rules you mentioned, from memory I probably would have gone with Sandhaven as I felt he threw kicks and some elbows whereas from memory Lineker seemed to be all punches. All from my bad memory though, Lineker may have been kicking too. Anyway, I could see it going either way though and wouldn't have thought either fighter was robbed. Not like the Arlovski fight.
The point you made at takedowns and strikes - In submission wrestling and BJJ it's arguable that the top position is not dominant, but there is no risk of punches or elbows coming down in those sports so it's difficult to compare the rules. Actually, I think it's difficult to assess takedowns in MMA in vacuum without taking into account the round as a whole and the impact the takedown had on a fighter cumulatively. A couple of imaginary situations, one including takedowns:-

  1. A Khabib-like fighter who is rocked by a strike but recovers and is dominant controlling the opponent for the rest of the round (takedowns and/or just control on the ground without actually beating them up much) completely draining their energy.
  2. A Dominick cruise-like fighter who is rocked but recovers, then for the rest of the round lands a lot more lighter strikes and is able to avoid his opponents strikes
In both situations, a fighter is rocked by a potentially fight ending strike, but goes on to control the rest of the round. I think in both these situations, I would feel that the fighter who was rocked but then controlled his opponent should still win the round. I'm by no means an expert and don't have any answers for the judging problem. I'm just playing devils advocate and thinking of some situations that might create problems with the higher ranking of individual hard strikes that you mentioned :)

Yeah, I can see other people judging Sandhaven as beating Lineker, and it doesn't upset me even if I don't necessarily agree (I thought it was close). I think Sandhaven probably threw more kicks but again it depends on the type of kicks and how they landed - nobody throws side kicks or light rangefinders in Muay Thai because they don't score well there, where the emphasis is on damage, i.e. clean, effective/impactful strikes. The criteria in MMA is actually the same, but the judges and commentators don't seem to understand that (it's possible that the commentators do understand, but they aren't necessarily there to be impartial, they're paid by the promoter to maintain viewer interest, which means convincing them that the contest as winnable by either competitor). For a strike to be effective, it must make it past the opponent's defence. Despite the way the statistics are compiled, a checked kick or a strike that lands on the arms is not really effective as a strike and only has value in terms of aggression (or "aggressiveness" if you don't understand how English works, like the California Athletic Commission), which is only a consideration if effective striking and grappling is equal.
I agree that the takedowns need to be taken in the context of the round and that MMA is different to grappling because someone can potentially do a lot of damage throwing strikes from the guard, especially if their posture is not controlled - I just want what they actually do to be taken into account, not what they or their opponent could have done. Almost no wrestling takedown should be seen as a display of dominance equal to a knockdown - only powerful slams or suplexes that stun an opponent should be scored like a knockdown, e.g. Lawler on Askren.
There is a martial reason behind the grappling scoring system - it rewards positional dominance because this control facilitates more effective striking or other damage. Although it is possible to hit someone from their guard, you can do a lot more damage from side control or mount because they can't control your body. I don't like seeing someone rewarded for a high ground strike count while they are in someone's guard with their upper body posture also controlled, just throwing lots of weak punches to stop the ref standing them up for inactivity. Round 4 of MacDonald vs Fitch is an example. One of the judges gave Fitch the round even though he was knocked down twice early in the round - once from an elbow and then from a kick while he still had his wobbly boots on. He was dominated for a couple of minutes and then survived by peppering McDonald with light punches (because McDonald controlled his posture) from the guard. He was never going to knock him out like that - all he could have possibly achieved was opening up better position control (to allow more effective striking), but that didn't happen.
I also think far too much credit is given for simply surviving ("heart" or fighting spirit). Getting beaten up but not getting knocked out is not better than almost beating your opponent to unconsciousness, it's not even close. Surviving is nice but if you're not coming back and almost finishing them, you need to be really overwhelming them with some other sort of dominance to win the round. Also, an unsuccessful submission or takedown attempt should reward the aggressor, if anyone. Surviving an attempt seems to be regarded by many as a victory, as if you are the one in control because the other guy didn't get to do what he wanted, but depending on the attempt, it should either be scored like a powerful strike that doesn't knock you out or simply regarded positively in aggression considerations if effective striking and grappling are equal.
Khabib is one of those guys that people get undeserved recognition against for thwarting his takedown attempts, as if you won something by not hitting the floor the first time he grabbed your leg. He typically chains his takedowns together, so there are often one or two "unsuccessful" takedown attempts preceding a successful one. The single leg takedown attempt in the middle of the octagon was never meant to do anything but force you back up against the cage so he can shift to a body lock - you don't deserve credit for thwarting a takedown because he just manoeuvred you exactly where he wanted you and took you down with his preferred technique. The reason Khabib's grappling is so dominant is that he never goes into someone's guard when he takes them down. He always ensures he controls the legs, so is technically in mount even when standing, or goes to side control, and he loves the crucifix there because that control lets him rain down massive indefensible strikes, which he couldn't do if his posture was controlled in guard. He also uses a lot of wrist control to maintain positional dominance.
The scoring of your examples is actually pretty straightforward. MMA rules value effective striking and grappling, defined as having impact with potential to end the match, with immediate impact weighing more heavily than cumulative impact, and the effect of actions while grappling being important rather than (top/bottom) position. In Example 1, the grappler that was rocked before taking his opponent down and doing nothing with the positional control loses the round. In Example 2, the high volume striker that was rocked and goes on to land lots of light strikes loses the round (because immediate impact weighs more heavily than cumulative impact).
The judges supplied by the various commissions are usually familiar with boxing, sometimes have familiarity with wrestling, but almost always are grappling novices and don't seem to understand that there is often strategy involved with submissions and takedowns, where you threaten one to force your opponent into a position to set up another (there is by definition only ever one successful submission in any submission grappling contest, and it's naive to think that there was no value in the "unsuccessful" submissions that led to the ultimate one).
Bellator is a bit of a mixed bag. Gegard Mousasi is as good as anyone in the UFC, and the lesson that Fedor Emelianenko gave Chael Sonnen was amazing (and his walkout gave me goosebumps) but there's some boring stuff too. To be honest, there's plenty of garbage in UFC, too, but it has such a slick presentation that it seems more palatable. Regardless, I don't even think I could watch Bellator live in Australia if I wanted to. I could watch UFC live at a pub but I prefer to watch it after the fact so that I can skip all the stuff in between the fights - there is so much filler. ONE Championship knows how to keep the action moving - if you go to the toilet in between fights, there's a decent chance you will miss some action. Admittedly, their fighter introductions and ringside announcer almost make me envy the hearing impaired at times, and it looks like they pay the ring girls with vouchers to Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon, which is a bit offputting.

I watched the first fight on the Bellator card - absolutely ridiculous...amateur hour. Then turned off. I've seen the result of the main fight and the interview afterwards, but haven't been back to watch any of the others. I've seen some very good fights on Bellator, but the bad ones are terrible and put me off sitting through a whole event live. Much prefer to skip through it afterwards and miss the bad ones!
