Hello everyone!

I am VIPER, owner of the Pinball Horizons group, formed in late August this year.
I am a pinball lover for the better portion of my life, starting in the early 90s. Thanks to Zen studios, I experienced a rebirth of passion for pinball with Pinball FX, some 10 years ago. And thanks to Steam (and Steamgifts yes ;), that passion is fuelled to the max as it was in the days of EPIC Pinball and co.

As many PFX players, I was overwhelmed with the amount of tables, not really knowing any of them well and not experiencing the stories they offered. In late Spring 2017, I was happy to be a part of a Steamgifts birth of a Pinball FX2 Players Unite! Steam group of PFX2 lovers with intent of finding more people to share our Leaderboards with. With my background of organizing things, gaming included, just finding people wasn't enough for me, so I somewhat took over and started organizing casual Tournaments lasting 2 weeks per table. The idea took off and I was pleased to run the Group's activites for 3-4 months that it was open, with better and better turnout from one to the next table.

To keep the joy going I then created my own Group, joined by most of existing PFX2 friends, currently at 30 members, based on the same very idea as I ran Tournaments in the previous one.

  • explore the tables we own, but mostly hardly know, and experience everything they have to offer
  • though seeking improvement in our skills, have a casual and friendly Group of players
  • most importantly, have fun and not care/stress about how you place

All these in a form of Tournaments. The word tournaments of course brings competition to mind,. Also frustration, envy,... But it's a great way to keep the activity and the idea going, which so far hasn't been a problem.

The main "attractions" are 2 types of Tournaments that we run:

  • BiWeekly - Lasts 15 days per table, which is enough time for anyone to learn and experience the table. The name is a hommage to the previous Group.
  • Monthly - Lasts a whole month and provides plenty of time to really have a go at a table and get some great understanding of the table and results at the end.

And then we got other stuff that we think off on the way.
At the time of writing, we are in our 5th BiWeekly and 2nd Monthly Tournament.
As the title already suggests, we play PFX3 and PFX2, side by side. Wether it be technical issues or personal preference, anyone can play PFX3, PFX2 or both.

By playing, you will get to know your tables a lot better, improve your overall skill as a pinball player and hopefully have fun with us. As for myself, I really had a lot of fun in the past 6 or so months while playing with fellow SteamGifters. In these few months I learned more about the tables than in years before. My overall skill of a pinball player is constantly improving. And I am noticing the same things in other members of the Group.

So, let this be it for this lengthy introduction and lets get down to "business".

POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS

We are looking for:

  • People who actually own PFX3 and/or PFX2 - If you just want another group on your list, I'm sure there are plenty others out there for you.
  • Active PFX3 and/or PFX2 players - If you don't intend to actively participate in our group playing of the games, we are not the right group for you.
  • Players who are here for casual play and to have fun in a friendly environment. - If all you care is beating everyone and bragging about it, that's not what we are about.

There are no other requirements. If you own 1 or all the tables, you are welcome to join, as long as you understand you might have to wait between Tournaments if your table library is not that full. You can still actively participate in the group in the mean time in other ways. Sharing screenshots of your great runs and achievements (literal or those pictures), your tips and tricks, with questions on improving your game, chatting with us, etc.

If you see yourself in the above text and are interested in joining Pinball Horizons, post here and expect an invite.

Please also state:

  • how an active PFX player are you?
  • do you play PFX3, PFX2 or still both?
  • all the tables you own in PFX3 and PFX2. (use the lists below for help)

You are welcome to also share your pinball games history, your Pinball FX / Zen Pinball history and your opinions on any liked/hated tables.

Since most of us are coming from PFX2, you can use the PFX2 list as a base (since all PFX2 tables apart from Ms. Splosion Man, Plants vs Zombies and South Park pack transfer to PFX3) and then use the PFX3 list for what you have only in PFX3.
If you don't have PFX2, use only PFX3 list.

ooh, another pinball group :3

I was in PFX2PU but I wasn't very active :\
recently joined PFX3PU and the new Tournaments mode they (Zen) added looks quite nice :)
Since I own few tables, joining more groups could be a good way to play more tournaments (group A plays on a table I don't own but, perhaps group B plays one I do)

My playtime may vary.. from a couple of matches daily to weekly/monthly, depending on various stuff :\
I prefer FX3 because there's no need to upload screenshots to prove my score, but I bought those FX2-only tables I own during the last summer sale so I haven't enjoyed them enough yet :\

if interested, my tables are:
Sorcerer's Lair
Excalibur
Mars
Ant-Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
Captain America
Venom
Doctor Strange
Portal
The Walking Dead

Plants VS. Zombies
South Park pack - Butters’ Very Own Pinball Game, Super-Sweet Pinball

anyway, good luck with the group ^_^

Deffinitely. I try to select tables so the least amount of membes are inactive at the same time, but apart from the free table, there's always gonna be someone warming up the bench. People with all the tables are a minority.

I'll send an invite and thanks!

Hi everyone. I would like to share my experience about this group and also to let you know why this is not “just another pinball group”, as a fellow steamgifter assumed above :)

For starters I’d like to mention the most important thing: the love - and the dedication at the same time - for pinball, of the person who created this group. When you are doing something you really love I think it shows, putting your best self forward into it, dedicating your free time and taking care even of the small details of your work. Under these circumstances, if your sole motivation is pure love for what you’re doing, the result will shine.

I am far from an experienced PFX player myself, in fact I am keep learning some of the basics. Even though I was playing for a while, I realized that I was unware about some mechanisms, tricks and essential tips that improved my experience with the game significantly. Thanks to the interactions with the other players in the group’s discussions, regarding each tournament but also a special thread dedicated to tips, I have learned a lot of new things about the game.

If you are already into pinball and you prioritize having a good time over getting as higher in the ranks as possible, while exploring and finding out more about the tables along with others who share the same love for pinball, you should feel like home.

If you feel attracted to pinball but you haven’t given it a proper try yet, this can be your chance to hop into a train full of pinball arcades, surrounded by friendly fellows with whom you can plain side by side and not against, getting to know them and even make new friends. There can only be one destination fot that train: Fun! 🚂

I appreciate the kind words.
Although in its core, you have to do things you are like, are proud off, it always helps if others have something from it. I wish I had more time on my hands. Work keeps me well occupied, but so far I think we're sailing smooth.
And in something like we have here, it's only normal we share our own insight and experience. If I quote myself from my years in runing racing game tournaments: "It's better to lose a great race, than to win a boring one where you easily drive to the finish line." So anyone that fits the second part, needs to share until the first part becomes a viable option :)

Pinball FX3 is gonna be 2 months old soon. What are your thoughts on it? Have you completely switched, mix it up with PFX2 or are still firmly on PFX2 train?

They need to fix a truck load of various bugs and make several adjustments (Tournaments especially), before it gets to where it needs to be, but playwise it's as fun as PFX2. Some tables are easier, some harder, some even with PFX2, which is understandable due to physics changes.
I'm deffinitely not forgetting PFX2, same as with original PFX. Though the latter doesn't get that much love anymore. It shows they were still at the beginning of their work with pinball physics, whereas PFX2 is a masterpiece. I guess a lot like my story with Forza Motorsport series on X360, where I play all of them, except the first one, which has a really subpar physics model compared to others.

BUMP.

(As you know) I'm mixing both games, I enjoy them both. The tables play completely different in FX2/FX3. It's not even the strong bumpers in FX3. In some tables hitting some specific ramp was difficult in FX2. Suddenly, it's easier in FX3 (althought the design is seemingly identical), but some other ramp becomes diffucult.

Exactly. It's basically relearning all the tables. On most you just can't do what you did before in the same way.
It was evident coming to PFX2 from PFX, but now there are so many tables, it's really noticable.
I hope I haven't written this above, for me Boba Fett (so far) is a table I now enjoy more. Still not easy, but more enjoyable. Spider-Man on the other end, I can't enjoy fully, more like a chore, while I'm always having a blast in PFX2. Of course there are some who aren't affected really in either way. But it's 60+ tables and it'll take some time ti figure all effects fully :)

Anyone giving a chance to other pinball games besides PFX games?
Just bought EPIC Pinball on GOG.com and having a blast playing it again. It's of course incomparable against PFX, just the physics' alone are galaxies apart, but it's no less fun than a couple of decades ago.

It's decent and different look on the classic pinball tables.

I've seen the gameplay. But how does it play? Do you feel you're playing a pinball game?
I had a sense of emptiness while watching the gameplay.

You can give additional directions to left and right... I'm not comfortable with that, so that I play it like a classic pinball game.
Switching between characters / balls is the twist in the game, but I don't feel that the balls play different. I can't feel that the big ball is "heavy" and the small quick ball is more nimble.
I had only one run so far. I'll give it another shot in my days off ( =

I haven’t tried FX yet, but I am intrigued. Is that a problem if a total newbie would want to join your group, if I decide to do so later? Also what tables would you recommend to try first?

It's no problem at all. We're here for casual players and in turn we are also newbie friendly :) If you decide to join us at some point, let us know.

Well, there are two aspects to your second question. The difficulty and the things you like.
Difficulty
First of all, as soon as you download the game, you already have a free table, Sorcerer's Lair. It's not that hard and the balls don't tend to fly out all the time.
As for other tables, not to difficult to play and not losing balls every 5 seconds, these are a few that come to mind: Mars, Super League, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and Wolverine (Marvel Original Pack), Star Wars Balance of the Force Pack, and possibly Balls of Glory Pack (haven't really played them all to be quite sure yet).
It's hard to remember, even if you play PFX for 10 years like me, because of the number of tables, but I think this selection is nice to play and it's not that difficult to keep the ball in play even for beginners.

Things you like
First of all there are 2 major licensed universes, Star Wars and Marvel. Then other licensees like Aliens, Bethesda, Universal movies, and the original tables created by Zen Studios. If you are into Marvel or SW, you're probably not gonna look elsewhere first. If you like to experience completely new stuff, than originals are your best bet. And still the above list can help you pick your starting tables.

I agree, whenever I didn't have a group of people, like now you guys, I jumped from one table to the next and next... not getting much out of them. In a group, where you stay on a table for some time, the experience is much better.

That's exactly the case with me too. Before I was jumping from table to table, rarely focusing on a single one for too long. Now I am exploring way more what each table has to offer :)

Haven't been around SG/ST lately. Too much other stuff going on.
I think these 3 tables are a nice addition to the licensed part of the table roster. They seem very cool and feature some of the hallmark moments from the series.

As anyone could have predicted, new Star Wars/Marvel movie, means new Pinball FX table...in case of SW The Last Jedi, we get 2 tables.
One based on the movie and one based on the island where Luke hid for years.

The Last Jedi table

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Survive a First Order onslaught as the Resistance, train Rey in the ways of the Force on Ahch-To, and defend Finn from Captain Phasma, blasting away at stormtroopers as BB-8. Jump a ramp to shoot down TIE fighters, fight off Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer, and teach Rey that the Force isn’t just moving rocks!

Star Wars: Ahch-To Island

Luke Skywalker (reluctantly) welcomes you to his secluded hideaway. Train Rey in the ways of the Force, convince Luke to join the Resistance and help Chewbacca deal with some Porg problems. You’ll even get a taste of everyday life on the island as Luke, including reminiscing about his Rebellion days through R2-D2’s hologram projections. And when the lights go off during a multiball mode? Let’s just hope the Force is with you…

So if every movie is getting a table...in case of Bobba Fett movie that means another one :D...I find it strange there's not a trio of tables based on Episodes I, II and III. I think they'd make a great set of tables with nice missions and mini-missions as well (think pod racing).
What do you guys think?

Heya, I´d love to join this group :) I loved playing pinball since I was a child.. in the 80s we had a real table in our basement. Other than that it was hard to find real tables in Germany accessable to children (most of them could be found only in casinos), so I spent a lot of time with digital pinball on Amiga and PC in the 90s. Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions, Epic Pinball, Slam Tilt etc. After that I tried some of the later pinball games, but somehow there was none that was able to light that fire from before. That was until I discovered Pinball FX2 on the X360 and fell in love all over again ^^

Right now my playing-habbits change drasticly.. sometimes I barely play for 1-2 month, sometimes I play ~2 hours every day for a while. I´m already a member of PFX3PU, so I already know a lot of people here in this group ^^

These are the tables I own / don´t own
