To bring some joy into the world, I would like to share my pictures with you all. I have been taking pictures of the moon with my phone and telescope for about the last year. I would like to share them with you. Some are not so great and some I have done decent with. It has taught me a lot about Astrophysics vs perspective. I now have a better understanding of why people believe what they believe. I also have been observing the positions of the sun. No pictures as of yet. I need a Sun Filter for telescope pictures. I also have been experimenting with my Canon. Nighttime pictures mostly. I have been using a scope for it on the moon as well. I also have a scope for my phone which gave me decent pictures of the moon. I am not done with the moon pictures. When I get them unloaded on the computer, I will add them. This has been an ongoing project. Mostly for learning purposes only. If you have any pictures to share, feel free to post them. I hope you all enjoy it! Much love!

P.S. I tried to make it tidy but it won't let me I guess.

I would love a computerized telescope one day. Manual can be difficult. But I use the phone for now since I can take 10 shots at a time..the deck shakes lol..I learned the settings on it already. You should have seen the first attempts..November 2019..the pictures were aweful..blurry..you couldn't see the crators, haha.. Next, I need to try taking shots with the canon through the telescope. But I am still learning the settings mostly.

Of course! Cookies are awesome! ♥ Thank you :)

I find great joy in observing and photographing birds. I didn't even know there's something called birdwatching when I started.

Here's from the last time I've been at birdwatching:

This one has no editing and thus looks not as good as it might. I have an edited copy on Instagram but forgot where it is on my computer. xD

Birdwatching is like a meditation to me. It helps me find peace and joy and, well, spend some time in the fresh air. Everyone can do that, you don't even have to be patient - it's not like you have to be in one spot for hours, you can take a walk through the woods and find lots of birds to watch and listen.

It's an interesting aspect of this activity - you watch, you listen, and then you look online or in the books what type of bird you have been observing.

Yeah, the library has been closed for a few months..they reopened and now they won't let me in. The mask thing. Can't wear one due to medical issues. So I will put a book in wishlist on Amazon or something. Search wants me to be specific. Looking up "Green Birds" doesn't really help lol

Permalink

Well, you probably would know it is a woodpecker if you were observing it because it was pecking a tree. It is green with grey head and red crest. You type all that and look for photos. Probably, your first guess would be European green woodpecker but it has different head. If you look further you will find the one that looks like the one you were observing. Additionally, you can listen samples of its singing and read about its behavior on Wikipedia - to be sure it's a right guess. And there are lists on Wikipedia that can actually help - List of birds of Ukraine (it is in Russian but you can see that it is carefully systematized and every single bird has a sample photo). It is a little bit harder with the books...You have to know where to look; you can't search it by color and size, for instance. I have a birder's book but I don't use it to recognize birds. xD I look into it with my 3 y.o. daughter to tell her about different birds while she looks at pretty pictures.

Do you have to wear a medical mask at all times in public places or you can use a transparent plastic thingy instead? It is pretty popular here in Poland.

Very nice list of birds! Very beautiful. We have mourning doves here and I was able to capture one with the phone. The cardinal and the bluejay here are hard to capture because they are always on the move. That's true on books. I do like books better though. Probably cause I grew up with books. There is that calming feeling you get when you turn the page while learning about things. Sounds weird but I think I am more focused with books. My oldest is 20 and my youngest is almost 18. I miss where I could sit and read to them or show them pictures. Time goes fast lol.

Yeah medical masks or some sort of face covering that covers the mouth and nose. The face shields give room to breathe but they say no because it's not right on the mouth and nose. There are 4 places however, I can go to without one though. They won't discriminate over medical conditions. So I am not completely barred from society.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I grew up with the books too and read them all the time despite my love for tech. And my daughter likes books. We're old-school about that, we give her very limited time in front of gadgets (maybe once in a week for educational purposes) but plenty of books to choose. Wow, yeah, time flies especially when you have kids and your day is full of daily routine. It is not so strict about masks in Europe I guess. Many people wear these face shields without a mask.

Yeah, you really have to play with the settings of the phone. The moon is actually very bright through a telescope and the scope. I even had a filter on the telescope but it didn't help much..then I found the dimmer on my phone. Also another hard thing is to get the phone to set perfectly with the telescope and having to align it with the scope. That can be a pain. But the end results turn out good. I also use zoom on my phone. I got the idea from someone who took moon pictures with their phone so I played around with it for a month or so. Then I accidentally found the scope for my phone on amazon lol. The earlier results were not as good but over time I got better at it. Right now the moon is a new moon so I will need to wait. But will experiment with my Canon in the meantime.

That does sound like a lot of tweaking so all the more kudos to you for fiddling so much and getting such great results.

Yeah I tend to learn things on my own and this has been a great experience. I do have some nature photos and cloud photos as well. I actually started out with clouds. Then the moon shined and thought "That would make a great pic, now only if I can take it up close" haha. I even tried with binoculars and the moon is so bright far away that in the picture, it looks like a sun. That's was only with phone. Some of those planet pictures are taken with both Canon and phone. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus. I just couldn't post it with those in lists. I tried. I also took pictures of a partial Scorpio and cassiopia with the canon. I think tripods are awesome though. I shake without one. Those are exposure pictures. I looked through them and you can see the exposure all over the place on some lol. I accidentally took one when a lightning bug decided to pass through so there was a long yellowish glowing line. In another, a jet passed so you could see a bright white line. I showed a friend of mine and he said UFO! lol :D I also have some moon pictures with bugs flying in front of the telescope lol. I also take video and seen plenty fly across. I started recording in case a sattelite passed through. I seen one move very fast across the moon on my first look.

I managed to teach myself many things but I'm hopeless when it comes to photography. My sister says I'm geometry-impaired lol and she's probably right.

Then the moon shined and thought "That would make a great pic, now only if I can take it up close" haha

Oh I've had that impulse many times, as can be witnessed by the hundred or so pictures of a tiny spot of brightness in the dark that rest in my phone library lol but yeah it ain't easy with a phone. Never even thought of binoculars, I'm no genius for sure. I only tried the telescope at that airbnb (in London! but we were high enough to see above the smog :P) on a whim because the sky was so clear but I didn't really know how to make it work and I had to stop my girlfriend from even trying or we'd never have made it to bed that night. She's a compulsive fixer and she loves photography.

Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus

Must be awesome! I saw Venus and Mars with my teacher's pro whatever telescope one summer evening when he invited a group of us to his place after we graduated and I can still see it when I close my eyes. You feel like you can touch them. It's a magical thing.

I think tripods are awesome though. I shake without one. Those are exposure pictures.

Yeah you need stability for anything beyond a couple of seconds. Tripods can be expensive. My lady looked for a year to find one she was confident would do what she wanted, while being light enough to transport easily when she is backpacking. It didn't come cheap but it was the cheapest she found that was quality. I guess it takes time (and she is very demanding lol)

I accidentally took one when a lightning bug decided to pass through so there was a long yellowish glowing line.

Haha must be awesome though.

In another, a jet passed so you could see a bright white line. I showed a friend of mine and he said UFO!

Superman is shining tonight! lol

I started recording in case a sattelite passed through. I seen one move very fast across the moon on my first look.

Plenty of those in space, or so I'm told. It's quite rare to see one though. You have to be peaking at the right moment!

Good thing the tripod came with the Canon. I really can't wait til Orion is in the sky. My favorite constellation (Besides Draco). Trees are in the way atm in the early morning. I have to wait or walk to the clearning out in the country with camera stuff lol. I have been debating that lately. The satellites..i have a bad habit of calling them "space junk". I heard a lot of astronomers were angry at Elon for sending all those satellites up. Plus they were too bright in the sky lol. I never seen them though. Not yet anyways but recently I have been looking to the south since my deck faces that way.

My girlfriend's favorite is Draco as well. Not just because of Dragonheart lol. She has a thing for dragons (her hometown's football team is known as The Dragons) so I also learned how to spot that one a while back. Good thing is you can see it all year!

Makes me wonder though..were the pterodactyls still around at one point during times of humans and we were not aware? hmm.

You really have to wonder, don't you? If not those, something close enough. And with all the different cultures and dragon variations, it can't be just folklore. There was no twitter to blame for spreading false rumors then lol

These are nice pictures! I am also interested in photography, altough I dont have a camera yet, just my smartphone.
It is a P30 Pro. And while I tend to photo everyday subjects, as I belive that these small things should not be overlooked (and as an introvert, I rarely venture to new territories anyways xD ), I mostly look for plants and animals. I try new things from time to time, and I am intent on bettering myself in general (portraits and landscape photography for example) but nature-related topics are my usual subjects.
I also tried to take shots of the moon. I was quite amazed at how good the quality was, for a phone camera at least. Not as good as yours, but good enough for me for the time being. :)
I also had the idea to use some home-made magnification, tried to do that with my old binocular, but its heavy and inefficient.
And just a few days ago, I've made some long exposure starry sky photographs. I've selected one I deemed the best and edited it a bit with the preinstalled phone app. Added some contrast and saturation.
I usually prefer to upload my photos unedited, so this is a rare occurence.
Here it is:

I could only catch the brighter planets with my phone. Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. I guess not enough exposure. It's not manual. I wish it was. I tried so many times taking pictures of Orion with it lol. But it's a cheapie. That is a pretty nice photo. I think that's my goal with my canon. I think the only problem I have is light pollution and trees. I could take one in the early morning but the trees lol. I may have to go searching for a better spot (instead of my deck).

Yeah, some remote location away from lights would be the ideal spot. I was planning to get into camping anyways, so I could as well merge the two into one occasion.
By the way, its a little off-topic, but I just won a game from one of your whitelist giveaways. I wonder, how comes i was on your whitelist in the first place?
Dont take me wrong, I dont mean to complain, especially because the Agatha Christie game was on my wishlist for a long time. I am quite happy about it! But as far as i remember, we dont have any history. To my knowledge, we did not speak before and you were not among the winners of my previous GAs, neither won I a GA of yours before. Well, you either need a scope for the phone or a telescope. I also have an adapter I hook the phone onto the telescope. The scope pictures which are the last four, are actually pictures from phone and the Canon both using scopes. I notice you get less light blobs if 1. getting closer to the lighted object or 2. taking the shot when the moon is hanging out when the sun is still out. With the canon, I had to change some setings for it because it was an orange blob at first lol.

They are ALL so cute! I have a cat who loves drinking from the sink and types on my keyboard. She also turned down my speakers at one point lol. My other cat just likes to eat and sleep lol. She actually played with string yesterday though. I was actually surprised.

Any Cat will play if you find something they like, it's just a matter of discovering whatever it is. I haven't met a Cat that didn't play with a laser pointer, if you haven't tried one yet it might be worth picking one up.

Well, Lena likes the laser. Willa will only sit back and watch. Once in awhile she will put her paw on it if it gets close but most of the time she ignores it.

How old is she? I've had Cats that would rather lay in the sun most of the time than play when they get older.

She will be 13 in October. But has been like this since I known her..She was 7 when I adopted her.

I had one like that, she was 8 when I adopted her and she would occasionally play but not for very long. Probably a result of not getting much playtime when younger during the time they're normally more active.

hmm yeah that could be the case. Not sure how the family before me treated her. All I know is that they were moving and could not keep her.

Is it sad that the only interesting pictures I have are from the various birthday cakes I made for my kids?

Great cakes! Perfect balance of "Looks good enough to be interesting, but not to the point when you are too sorry to destroy it by eating".

Nice moon shots, I'd personally have posted a selection, not all.
Great how you get them with a phone and telescope :)
Better than my moonshots :)

I'll post 3 of mine, not my best, just ones I could find online, too lazy to upload.

1 Milky Way Explorer
2 Chonk bending a branch
3 View from a geocache I placed.

Oh man, I would love to do panoramic pictures. All great pictures. <3 I have goals set for panoramic I don't blame you for that. Took me over an hour to find in my drives and upload mine. Not to mention my computer kept restarting or crashed. I put all links on wordpad and saved them though. So I didn't have to reup anything.

You caught the Mercury transit! I was going to go to that last year but it snowed and they canceled the event. So many trees and houses here, I was unable to catch the comet. I miss seeing the Milky Way. That's a very good picture of it.

Nice partial eclipse. I really need a Sun filter for my telescope.. a good one. Nice one Of Moon and Jupiter. When I do the closeups of Jupiter, it's a bright light in the telescope. I do have that mirror thing in it so maybe I need another. I see the moons..4 of them. But no detals..just bright light even with a Barlow. I hear of layering them to get a clearer Jupiter? But I am dumb with certain softwares lol. I seen Uranus once but no picture. It was when I was trying out my telescope. Blue dot. lol..That's why I invested in a X5 barlow.

That last picture..magical!

I really got to get in gear and learn my Canon. I know of some settings but I am still "The new kid" compared to many pictures other amature Astronomers have taken. like these

Very nice photos! That made me very happy seeing these. Next for me? Get away from the city for a bit..for sure!

To be honest, I don't use a good sun filter either. It's a homemade one, made out of several layers of the kind of foil that you put on car windows, lol. Maybe I should invest in a real one at some point, haha.

I don't own a telescope so whenever I'm watching the sky, all I see is bright dots as well. All of my photos are taken with a dslr camera and lenses and then processed. I'll take it though. It's still really exciting in my book!

Thank you so much! Honestly, the night sky is one of the reasons why I don't think I could ever live in a city. I'm really fortunate enough to be able to see the Milky Way with the naked eye on some occasions. Obviously it's nothing like the pictures but you can make it out occasionally. It's magical.

Ooo teach me obi wan how to make one! lol. Hey! If it works! My Canon is DSLR but never could get a Mercury transit without a scope or telescope.

Hahaha, well maybe not because it's probably very unsafe and I shouldn't recommend it. I don't have telescope but I have a telescope lens, so that works for me – for now. I'm too lazy to look into actual telescopes – way too many options!

Yeah I want a computerized telescope. The manual can be quite annoying. It has a laser pointer on it but the lens never is aligned with the object so I don't bother using it. Either way, the results are good on yours.

Nice!
Great composition on Neowise, and I love the Mercury passing :)
I still have an unused 10x (darker) filter, maybe I should start pointing it up :P

Aw thank you! ^_^
Well I wouldn't be so quick, after all, you kinda need special filters for the sun, I wouldn't use just an ordinary one. It's super fascinating stuff though, that's for sure!
