Phones are not so hard to track. Many friends got their phones back. Pnly people don't report stolen phones to the police, because they think it's impossible to find them. But actually it's very easy. Using the IMEI you can also lock the phone and it will be unusable without motherboard replacement or some serious reprogramming.

Well it's super easy to track them based on IMEI number, but noone will do it without court order.
Police should have special departments to just do this one thing, and they don't have them. OP would have to be super lucky to get his phone back. Not single person I know got phone back albeit providing police with IMEI number (seriously, phone operator won't analyse position of every stolen phone in whole country and police won't have special police patrol to send if his phone will log into network on other part of the country).

happend to me aswell 2 years ago...
was in the metro and it was full till the point that nobody could move
someone picked my phone out of my pocket and i didnt even notice
funny story was this guy... or whoever used my phone after that was still uploading pictures to the online cloud
this guy from romania made some hilarious selfies and like 50 other pictures before realizing he could turn off that uploads...

I'd love to put a bait bycicle on public places, wait for someone to grab it and then ask him why he's doing it with 10 not amused people surrounding him Chris Hansen style. Same with phones and wallets. It would definitely decrease the stealing rate.
