A 30 year old classic tune. In fact, the album for me was one of the best of that era. Still have the cd somewhere in my cupboard. Need to dig it back out for a listen again! :)

knowing that this song is 30 years old really makes me wonder? how was music distributed and gone viral pre-Internet? my guess is through television/radio but I also want to hear from your experience :3 if you're not too busy to share!

Well back then, MTV actually stood for Music Television and not the garbage it has now, i also believe there was a channel called VH-1 or something but that wasn't available here.
For the rest radio and record stores (which mostly disappeared here).

In the early 2000's with the upcoming of internet, you had sharing programs like Napster which was rather populair to share music.

I'll vouch for VH-1 being a thing; I was never big into either, but my sister went through a big music television phase, and she wanted to watch MTV, but she was fairly little at the time (just turned 31 a few months ago), and with all the condom commercials and that one with the deodorant spray that had 2 naked teenagers spraying their genitals while the voiceover got bleeped, she was only allowed to watch VH-1. VH-1 was like MTV's uncool younger brother, but around the turn of the century, they had specials like "I Remember the [insert decade here]" where comedians would goof on the dorky styles of the times, like the polar opposite of today's nostalgia obsession, and that was worth a few laughs at least.

I can't remember such things from MTV, i wonder if certain countries had their own MTV, like US vs UK?

I still remember being sick one day, stayed at home and MTV had a whole day devoted to David Bowie, and since then i became a Bowie fan. <3

i do believe I had a different MTV back in mid 20-, because I looked up the programs of MTV for the US and there's nothing alike that I could remember. In my a third world countries the programs were mostly divided into regions, like Top US-UK, K-Pop, J-Pop, C-Pop, ect. there was also Mix leaderboard iirc
and one more interesting thing, is that some of those programs are actually live interactive with their audience through a paid SMS system. Like you could text [insert song code here] and whichever song got the most vote within the time frame will be added to the playlist. And I remember one program where you could like send your message to somebody and the host will read those out loud with the name of the recipient.
Can't remember how many times I heard a love confession through that way. xD

That's entirely possible; it would make sense, given that the hits would differ from country to country.

Back then, if it wasn't being played on MTV or mainstream radio, you mainly learned about new music through word of mouth, friends sharing mix tapes, or through compilation CDs (labels released tons of those to promote their artists. Many music magazines would come with one as well). If you stayed up late, many radio stations had programs focused on new, local, or underground music. I also learned about a lot of music back then by hanging out in Usenet music groups (back in the days before Usenet became nothing but a porn dumping ground).

I did a little bit of promoting for a small label back then. Pre-social media, it was pretty much all about going out in person, trying to convince stores to carry your music, and getting DJs to spin it at clubs or on the radio.

Just as the others are saying, and before MTV, it was mostly through the radio, and that one friend who's pick you up in his car, and say, "You gotta check this out!" because he had the album on CD or cassette or even 8-track. The radio didn't suck back then, either; it wasn't just the same rotation every few hours, and you'd hear a fairly wide variety, even if you listened every day. Of course, that depended on the station; in our area, at least, adult contemporary always sucked. You learned about the older stuff from commercials that were selling CDs that had a mix of old stuff; tracks and artists would scroll on the screen, and the one in yellow would be the one that was playing at the time, like this. The number was almost 1-800-441-2400, even though it isn't here.

The pleasure is also mine; it's not every day that someone wants me to ramble on about the old days.
