As I said, you could see just the squared map. Think of a grid of minesweeper :)

Since the game you're talking about is so old you might be able to find it on this site... They have several catagories to search and they include a screenshot of each game.

Hope this helps.

10-15 years ago, when I was so young and naive, I bought a CD with some random shareware and freeware games.
There was all kind of stuff like a trial version of Dragon Warrior(NES-like), a pretty simple chess game, Microman and around 20 others.
But there was a game that caught my attention, that I played several times because it was damn hard and sadly it was a shareware version.
I guess you could call it Roguelike-RPG-Adventure. There was a map (like 20X14) divided in black squares, you started at the centre but you could move in the adiacent squares in order to explore them. Some squares had monsters to fight, others had treasures, key items and some were empty. You had a character with RPG skill that could level up(not sure 100%). I remember that the first map had you fighting an Angel (or winged creature) after finding 2 keys to open doors to the final boss. There ended the trial version :(
Whoever helps me find the name of that game, or also something similar, will end up in my WL :)
