I'm a cynical, jaded bastard and I've had no faith in the industry for a long time. I just have to know how you guys feel about Squeenix finally doing "the thing" and if you think it's going to thrive or crash and burn.

Episodic... ridiculously long development cycle... delays (but that's probably a good thing... and man, how are they going to deal with the 2 controversial Don Cornero area segments? HOW!? SPIKY HAIR BOY GETS SMOTHERED BY MUSCULAR MEN THEN CROSS-DRESSES!!!

Also, if you're interested in playing the original before it's too late to really experience the magic of that mess: https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/1EUM8/final-fantasy-vii

Eh, I'm over it; I've been over it. The only reason I've ever said that they really should remake the game is for their own benefit; it's basically a license to print money. As for confidence, that drains right out of me as soon as I see that little stamp of death that Squenix calls a logo; as soon as the merger happened, they transformed innumerable beloved franchises of mine into things that I couldn't even acknowledge anymore. I think they're going to trash this old game with weird gimmicks and obnoxious minigames, and people are going to praise it, anyway.

I just want it to be unoffensive enough to not hinder people's view on the original.

I'd say that's a pretty reasonable expectation; despite my lack of interest in it, I hope the same, for the fans' sake.

I have had no exposure to Final Fantasy so I don't have any emotional commitment regarding a remake (and don't know anything about it).
Thanks for the giveaway.

Basically taking a classic in the turn based JRPG genre and turning it into an episodic ARPG with the shiniest of graphics.

Oh, well shiny graphics is normally not a bad thing in itself but I can understand a dramatic change of game mechanics upsetting fans a lot.

Basically from FF10 (turn based), to FF11 (MMO), then to FF12 (active strategy).

Very low confidence. FF7 was made when Square was in their prime, and helped usher in the golden era of big budget jrpgs. Todays SquarEnix is...well just look at the ports they've done of their various classic games and you can tell how much of a shit they give about their legacy (or quality control in general).

Also, I'm not a fan of some of the changes they've made in the remake in general, and the character models I think need some changes (Clouds arms have some really bad anatomy issues). On the plus side though, Midgar itself looks good.

I think the game will be gorgeous but I just don't have confidence in it being "good enough" to meet expectations of folks that have been waiting for it since the PS3 tech demo.

Story/game play should be like the original, monster wise. Some of the crazy weird ones have been replaced

It's sitting at a nice and even 50:50 split between yes and no which is actually surprising to me, I figured more people would be hyped but I also understand because I have very little faith and I'm a rather big fan.

I'm not really the target audience for it. Played it three or four years after it released. Maybe five. Didn't really play any JRPGs before playing VII. I'm still not a big fan of the game mechanics versus western RPGs, or even calling it an "RPG" in the first place considering the western D&D style interpretation of role-playing.

That said, FFVII is a very good game. Interesting story, characters, music, setting, and even gameplay. I would definitely consider it a classic.

So remaking it, apart from money reasons, seems unlikely to surpass the original. They might. Better graphics is an obvious one. But the recent remake of FF8(?) doesn't bode well. So, I'm doubtful. I hope the people making it have the capability, passion, and respect for the original that a remake deserves. But cynical me still thinks it's just being done for the money.

FF7 was a fairly straightforward game, not sure there are many massive plot points or mechanics that they can really ruin. Hit a few iconic beats with flashy set pieces, knock the rough edges off wandering around the world map, update the battle system without adding too many extra gimmicks and I'd be a happy camper.

Unless there's a fucking card game, then all bets are off.

Well.. I'm not gonna hold it against the original. It's been awhile - Times change.
Folks tend to desperately crave something new (like a remake) to satisfy an old nostalgic craving. It never works.

This whole expectance of ruin is just tiresome. I'll just take it for what it is ๐Ÿ‘Œ

I would be happy to be proven wrong, I don't want the FF7 remake to be bad, but what I've seen of it has not filled me with much confidence. Between the protracted development, episodic nature, and the bits about the game that we've seen thus far, I don't think it looks to be shaping up to be very good :( But I won't cheer if I'm right, and I would be happy if I'm wrong.

It's too big to fail! And making it episodic means they can course correct with features if necessary. As long as people aren't unhappy with the battle system, and it seems to be well received from looking at videos and you can use different versions of it depending on what you prefer.
