Feb 23 2022: Original post

As a Russian-speaking Ukrainian currently living in Poland, I have a complicated relationship with my home country. I have relatives and friends hailing from Russia; half of my family speaks Russian. Everybody in my school in Kyiv (i.e. Kiev) spoke Russian back in the early 2000s. It is true, there are millions of Russian-speaking Ukrainians. But just so you know, Ukraine is not a part of Russia; it was not created by fucking Lenin. Many Ukrainians have never been and do not want to go to Russia or be its part. The language vs. culture question is absurd. The Russian language was forced upon Ukrainians for centuries, and still, Ukrainians are different culturally. The mad tsar Putin is literally a blackmailer who imposes fear and anxiety on the entire Ukrainian nation. Everyone I know back in Kyiv prepares alarm briefcases with water and medicines, just in case of bombing, or plans to move, as I did after 2014. This is a fucking nightmare. I have anxieties of my own; I cannot stand this shit anymore. Please! This is an awareness thread. You have to know.
Ukraine is not Russia and does not want to be a part of it!

In Russia, seeking justice is a crime
Leader Of Group Of Mothers And Wives Of Russian Soldiers Detained En Route To Moscow
Olga Tsukanova, the leader of the Council of Mothers and Wives of Russian Soldiers, was detained on January 22. She was on her way to Moscow, where she planned to hand to the Prosecutor-General's Office complaints from around 700 women in connection with what is happening with their sons and husbands who have been sent to fight in Ukraine. Tsukanova was released by police hours later but ordered to return for questioning. She says she may face a charge of discrediting the Russian armed forces.

20 Days in Mariupol | 2023 Sundance Film Festival
Meet the Artist 2023: Mstyslav Chernov on β€œ20 Days in Mariupol”

Ukrainian filmmaker and journalist Mstyslav Chernov offers a window into the practices of conflict zone reporters and an unflinching, anguishing account of the 20 days he and colleagues Evgeniy Maloletka and Vasilisa Stepanenko spent covering Mariupol.

Context:

20 days in Mariupol: The team that documented city’s agony

Mstyslav Chernov is a video journalist for The Associated Press. This is his account of the siege of Mariupol, as documented with photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and told to correspondent Lori Hinnant.

The brave coverage of Chernov, Maloletka, and Stepanenko is something that should be never forgotten. There were news snippets with their reports during those nightmarish days, but that was only a fracture of 30 hours of video material that Chernov has filmed in the city. A documentary presented at Sundance is his way of showing the rest to the world.

Yep, the extraction of Chernov, Maloletka, and Stepanenko from Mariupol is an impressive account in itself. While I consider Chernov's work as one of the most valuable and harrowing report of the war and thus much more than a documentary, there is also this film, presented at 2023 Sundance as well, about MH17:

Iron Butterflies | 2023 Sundance Film Festival
'Iron Butterflies': first trailer for Sundance, Berlin title

In a world where violence can only be defended by lies, and lies only maintained by violence, Iron Butterflies presents the truth of what happened to MH17, but also what was at stake by not confronting it. Director Roman Liubyi uses a wealth of visual material and individual testimonies to craft this artful yet evidence-driven examination of a turning point in recent world history.

Ukraine hit by Russian missiles day after West's offer of tanks

Eleven people died and 11 others were injured after 35 buildings were struck across several regions, the state's emergency service said.
... Moscow launched 55 air and sea-based missiles on Thursday ... 47 of them were shot down, including 20 around Kyiv.
Earlier, Ukraine's air force said it had downed a cluster of Iranian-made attack drones launched by Russian forces from the Sea of Azov in the south of the country (24 out of 24 "Shahed" kamikaze drones were downed).

The previous wave of missiles was 12 days ago. With at least 46 people killed in the Dnipro residential building.

Update a day later: Russia launched 70 missiles at Ukraine on Thursday, 47 of which were intercepted. Moscow's forces also carried out 44 airstrikes, including 18 using Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones. All self-detonating drones were shot down. https://edition.cnn.com/europe/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-news-1-27-23/h_26df37541382cb4e47793936877b6fed

Senior EU official calls for a β€˜Radio Free Russia’ to help exiled media | European Commission | The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/27/senior-eu-official-calls-for-a-radio-free-russia-to-help-exiled-media

πŸ€”It is an unfortunate time when Russia is riddled with fake news.
Ukraine has been victimized for almost a year now by Russians led by fake news.

It seems that Russia is a country where people do not trust the government since the Soviet era and where people have a relatively large number of radios purportedly for reasons of national security.
Correct information may be a good suggestion and sign that will lead to normalization of Russia and good results for Ukraine and the world.

Thanks for the lists! πŸ’™πŸ’›

Keep in mind that some artists, public figures, news media, and even game studios (from russia) are openly against the war, and their voices might be worth supporting. I know it is not a popular opinion for a Ukrainian, but I really believe that such voices are important and that we should not dismiss them. Here is an example of my own struggles to stomach it. I listen a lot of Ukrainian and Polish artists on Apple Music these days, and Apple’s algorithms seem to think that I should enjoy artists from russia as well. That’s how I ended up listening to the band Grima and their recent album Frostbitten, not knowing that they hail from Krasnoyarsk. When I discovered the band's origin, I deleted the album in disgust despite liking it, contemplating that Apple should not promote Russian artists to Ukrainians (or anyone) like that. And what do you know? A couple of days ago, I learnt that Grima will tour Warsaw. Their presentation:

The second band to be heard at VooDoo is Grima – also a concept band that takes a critical look at the institution of war. It has existed since 2014 as a studio-only project, with a pagan ethos "based on the worship of the Old Forest, its power and magic, where Grima is the supreme god... a powerful spirit who protects only those who live in the forest and punishes anyone who disrespects nature". Conceptually, they approach criticism of the war more from the perspective of harm to natural order, but they take practical action outside of their art to openly condemn Russian war crimes committed on Ukrainian soil and financially support Ukrainian victims of the war and local Ukrainian artists who have had to cancel their concert plans because of the war.

Should we support such artists? Should we support Meduza? Well, it is something to think about. Russian society has to overcome the cancer of their own political oppressions and state propaganda somehow.

[Video on Twitter] - Yet another complaint from Russian mobilized men who were sent to the frontlines without any training and provisions. Yet they do nothing to stop the criminal authorities who send them there. They just whine.

These mobilized Russians are probably used in the Russian 'meat waves' tactic. They are pushed forward to try to exhaust Ukrainian defense forces and ammunition, and also expose Ukrainian firing positions. Wagner's prisoner fighters were used as meat waves, but now most of them are dead, so it's the turn of the mobilized to die.

NV visits Ukrainian camp for Russian prisoners of war - Ukraine news / The New Voice of Ukraine
https://english.nv.ua/nation/nv-visits-ukrainian-camp-for-russian-prisoners-of-war-ukraine-news-50300593.html

Sometimes spam claims that all Russians are going to be killed.
Recently, a Ukrainian news organization did an exclusive interview with a "prisoner of war camp" and if you want to check the situation, this article is for you.

The article also includes a question-and-answer interview with a former mercenary about whether the Russian government has explained to him that mercenaries are not recognized as "prisoners of war" and that they are essentially in a position to be killed.
These facilities are visited by international human rights organizations at any time, so no abuse or massacres have occurred. Russians can safely surrender to Ukraine and escape from the futile battlefield to the safety of the camps.

  • [Video on Twitter] - "Why in the world do Donetsk and Luhansk receive Russian pensions? Russia supports everyone except its own pensioners", complains this Russian woman.
The problem does not come from the people of Donetsk and Lugansk. Russia is unable to support its own soldiers or pay compensation to their families when they are dead.
  • [Video on Twitter] - "It's so bad in Germany with water, heat, people are freezing, they save on everything. In Russia, everything is better".
This is the conclusion of the video after showing the shitty living conditions in Novosibirsk, Russia. The propaganda did a great job on this old woman.

some gems of Russian propaganda

  • [Video on Twitter] - "Nothing should be considered civilian infrastructure during the war, even hospitals. Anything can be struck"
It seems that this Russian propagandist is tired of covering up Russian war crimes.
  • [Video on Twitter] - Meanwhile on Russian TV: State Duma member Andrey Gurulyov, former deputy commander of Russia's southern military district, argues that striking America with nuclear weapons is the only way forward, because Russia brings peace and calm everywhere it goes.
At the end, Andrey Gurulyov suggests that Russia in 1945 should have invaded all of Europe. This time, he suggests to keep pushing, for Russia's safety.

[Video on Twitter] - Aleksandr Rutskoy, ex vice-president of Russia, Major General of aviation, said he doesn't see a military victory for the Russian army. He said that the army was led by incompetent people.

[Video] - Boris Johnson says Putin made missile threat
Former British prime minister Boris Johnson said Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened him with a missile strike in a phone call last year prior to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
"He threatened me at one point and said, 'You know, Boris, I don't want to hurt you, but with a missile it would only take a minute. Or something like that. You know...jolly," Johnson said in an interview with the BBC.
"I think that from the very relaxed tone that he was taking, the sort of air of detachment he seemed to have, he was just playing along with my attempts to get him to negotiate."
The war began three weeks after the call.

The propaganda did a great job on this old woman.

That is sad on every imaginable level. The poor people are mistreated and left to die in cold. Yet they are brainwashed to be thankful for that. People in west should have some reality check and see what actually means "you'll own nothing and be happy"

argues that striking America with nuclear weapons is the only way forward, because Russia brings peace and calm everywhere it goes.

This would literally be an escalation to such extent Russia wouldn't exist anymore. Even if they only put up rockets same as in Cuban missile crisis - that would be an actual escalation of the war. Russian military command couldn't even say "hail putler" before every launch site would be leveled to the ground. If Americans now are indifferent since its not their war imagine what would happen if Russia literally would threaten the American soil. Every last person who comes on these fear mongering degenerate shows should be trialed for war crimes and thrown in jail for life sentences.

Irresponsible oafs who call for death and destruction of everyone. Some holier-than-thou morons who are on self implied holy war against the world. Sounds similar? I vaguely recall something similar happening in the 1940s.

"Nothing should be considered civilian infrastructure during the war, even hospitals. Anything can be struck"

and about this .... then why were they so stuck up about Crimean bridge being hit? Hypocritical bunch of oxygen wasters.

Ukraine can besiege Crimea and then get long range missiles from NATO to use against the Russian fleet and the Crimean Bridge. It will then become a matter of time.

The Russians are threatening to start a nuclear war if they lose Crimea. This is confirmation that the Russians expect to lose Crimea.

"February and March will be very active" [LINK]

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence believes that the war is β€œon the edge” of a β€œvery active” period.
"We are on the edge of a very active phase of hostilities, February and March will be very active,” Andriy Yusov, representative of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, said on national television.

Ukraine war: Russia planning 24 February offensive, Ukrainian defence minister says

Ukraine's defence minister has said Russia is preparing a major new offensive, and warned that it could begin as soon as 24 February.
Oleksii Reznikov said Moscow had amassed thousands of troops and could "try something" to mark the anniversary of the initial invasion last year. The attack would also mark Russia's Defender of the Fatherland Day on 23 February, which celebrates the army. Mr Reznikov said Moscow had mobilised some 500,000 troops for the offensive.
[...]
Mr Reznikov said Ukraine's commanders would seek to "stabilise the front and prepare for a counter-offensive" ahead of the rumoured Russian advance.
"I have faith that the year 2023 can be the year of military victory," he said, adding that Ukraine's forces "cannot lose the initiative" they have achieved in recent months.

500,000 sounds like a lot, but it's mostly unqualified and poorly equipped troops. They are unlikely to have been formed into cohesive formations capable of major offensive maneuver operations. Besides that, I doubt that Russia's logistics have improved.

It's never Russia's fault πŸ€₯
[Video on Twitter] - According to Girkin, the insidious West is forcing Russia into wars in order to destroy it. Sure! It’s the West that forces Russia to make every stupid thing. Who else!

[Video on Twitter] - Russian propagandists believe that the model of North Korea is the best suited for Russia - the omnipotence of the dictator and slavery of the people
These two Russians dream of becoming as independent as the North Koreans. Hmm, good luck with that. 🀨

[Video on Reddit] - β€œRussian SU34m dropped four high- explosive aerial bombs on residential buildings in the city of Kupyansk, fortunately three of them did not explode”.
This tells you two things, the Russians are terrorists and they use bombs with a 75% failure rate.

I'll add this regarding new offensive:

Sky News: Russia's foreign minister has issued a warning that the West won't be the only ones marking the anniversary of the conflict on 24 February with something to "gain the world's attention".

LPR's only mobile operator will disable cellular data in all of their plans starting February 11th, apparently to prevent leaks among militants.

The clips are real point of view footage made with a GoPro.
They show an attack from Ukrainian side on some evil Russian jerks.
They speak English as the international legion is involved too.
(spoiler: Ukraine wins)
Viewer discretion advised. You don't see people actually dying as the aggressor is behind walls. But still, this is a real POV footage of the war and people died.

In order:

4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQeyk1BQ7LE

The reason for posting this. To show how horrible war is. And this footage is not even close to the other bad things that happen.
I only see these kind of things in video games. I can't imagine how horrible it is in real. Fighting for your freedom.

Get them guys! I hope the newer equipment will be a game changer in the upcoming battles.
