I was in the JIF category up until a couple of years ago, and then I realized what it actually stood for. Now I say GIF, and I'm never turning back.

Always pronounced it "GIF" myself.

That's a bad argument, you say PEE in PC but it's short for Personal Computer so the acronym doesn't have anything to do with the pronunciation of the full name and vice versa. And G can be pronounced that way (soft G) when followed by I (gin, gist, giraffe). So it's fine.

I get what you're saying, but PC isn't a good example as there are no vowels in the acronym. You're just pronouncing the letters as you would say them--PEE CEE. The pronunciation of GIF has been debated because it resembles an actual word.

Also, there are just as many gi- words out there that have a hard G sound (girl, gift, giveaway, etc.) Why change the sound of the acronym when the first word has a hard G already?

Well because you can, and if the guy that made it said it's soft G, then it's soft G :). I get your point but it's still the creator's decision and there aren't any valid arguments why it can't be as he says. That damn vowel in the middle has created a mess, next time someone invents a format they need to only use consonants :P.

But what I'm wondering is, what gives the right to the creator of an image format to choose how to pronounce an acronym?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well why couldn't he? Words come and go, somebody at some point pronounced a word in a certain way and it stuck, same story with every word, same goes for spelling (blame them for all those pointless silent letters in the English language). I'd say if anyone has any authority over the pronunciation of a thing, it would be the person that made it up.

Except that "GIF" is technically not a word, but only the acronyms of a set of three words - basically, GIF is a combination of words which weren't invented by the creator of the GIF. If, for example, the man would have invented the word "graphics" and said that it was pronounced with a soft G, then I wouldn't discuss it since he would actually be the creator of a word.

The thing about it is that it's practically a word at this point, when people say let me show you this gif, it's a freakin noun :). So yeah, I would say he created a word, even if it started just as a format.

Ask Brett FAVRE aka "Farv".

A person who makes a name decides how it's pronounced.

Try walking around SW USA/Mexico and being all "No F you!, your name is "Gee-sus" not HAYSOOS!

A name, a word, still acceptable. Acronyms however, are a set of the first letters of multiple words of which the creator of the GIF hasn't invented. Is GIF still considered a word, in that case?

Does this mean that cg has the right to tell us how to pronounce "SG"? D:

EVeryone knows that "SG" is pronounced "sawgoo", so that's not really necessary.

i.e. I wonder what game will win the poll this week on Sawgoo?

as already stated - PC you pronounce each letter separately as they are in the afphabet, as with no vowel it would be unpronounceable. GIF you pronounce as a single word - even if you choose soft G you say jif not jee ai ef

My point is it doesn't have to be pronounced the way it's pronounced in its origin word, especially since the language allows it. You can go either way and since the guy that made it says it's a certain way, then that way it is.

yes. and question i was answering to was not how does it have to be pronounced but how I do pronounce it. So I answered how I pronounce it and gave reasoning for my pronounciation.

Another reason for my pronounciation is that in my native language there's no soft G, for this sound we use "dż" not "g" :>

Fair enough, I don't normally really take into consideration various native languages, only English since it's basically an English word. We are wasting far too much time on this :).

Soft G.

Even more debate afterwards:

A "G" can also be spoken softly like Geoff in english. Even if it usually is a hard consonant.

The creators of the format pronounced GIF as "jif" with a soft "G" /ˈdʒɪf/ as in "gin".

Considering the fact that what you mean by hard G is actually still a pretty soft one where I come from, hard G is the minimum required pronunciation.

You say Jif and they think of a household cleaning product.

I wait for someone else to pronounce it and use that for their own comfort. Unless they pronounced it "if", where the G is silent and I'm left utterly confused by the sudden unresolved questions. "Have you seen that cat if..." "that cat if what? WHAT?"
