From the FAQ:

Contributor Value and Levels

<...>

  • What are levels, and how can I increase my level?
Levels range from 0-10, with level 0 being the default after registration, and level 10 being the highest level attainable. Levels represent a user's contributions to the community. At their core, they are calculated based on a user's contributor value. When a user creates a giveaway that's received by the winner, their contributor value and level increases. This allows the user to access additional giveaways that are restricted to higher levels. If you mouseover your level in the navigation bar, or the level on your user profile, you'll see a tooltip with the level rounded to 2 decimal places. This will give you a better idea of small increments in level, and when you're about to level up.

People here tend to buy bundles a lot, then give away the games that they don't want. Bundled games give the gifter 15% of the game's worth in points. You actually have to gift the game to the winner and they have to mark it as received before it registers points to your account.

"Did you even try to find it? Like seriously...."

People can be quick to react to someone asking a question. I was here for an entire month already AND had made several giveaways before I found that piece about levels in the FAQ. Okay, admittedly, I wasn't looking for it because I didn't care that much. But... it's not immediately apparent unless you're the type that reads all the rules and regulations after joining a site. Let's face it, most of us don't.

I'm the kind of person who actually read the FAQ, Guidelines and TOS of this site before joining SG.
Just as I do with any site, so I know if I'm ok with everything. But I concede I'm part of a small minority in this regard.

Meh, it's not that I don't care. It's just that I know how to behave on a forum. I've been posting on forums since the early 00's and been staff on communities for almost as long, even written the rules. SG is clearly not a toxic community, and that's all I cared about. :)

Lol, I can almost guarantee you don't. Literally every program you download, you read the entire TOS? Most sites have a TOS that's around 20 pages long, filled with legal jargon.

Perhaps you do though and perhaps you understand all of it. Good on you for reading around 50 pages per month and keeping up with updates with all sites you visit, but don't assume that others do.

This didn't ruin anything for you. The person simply asked a question.

"I was here for an entire month already AND had made several giveaways before I found that piece about levels in the FAQ."

I was probably the same. I think if everyone remembered how they were when they first joined this site most would be a lot less harsh and bitter to these types of posts and users. When I first joined I remember being a huge leech--the type to just seek winning as much as possible no matter the game, and to try leveling up as cheaply and quickly as possible. I'd buy those cheap GameFactory bundles for the easy CV and buy all the cheapest 90% discounted games, and I never said thanks to the users whose gifts I'd won either. I was ungrateful and lazy, I just cared for getting free games, and I didn't really know about the right way of thinking or attitude towards this type of thing either. It's automatic to just think everyone is like you--after free games.

Ultimately 99% of the new users this site attracts will be like this. It's a steam game giveaway site, and most people just come here with the same notion I had--of it being an easy place to get free games, and nothing else. And that crowd just isn't going to be full of the most generous and thoughtful of people.
And the only reason I ever changed from how I was, was because I came to interact more and more with the community. I actually talked to other people; their kindness drew me in, and I learnt their perspective too. And through this I came to eventually understand and respect this place and it's community, too much to be how I was.
You aren't ever going to get many people to be different from that by being unwelcoming to new users (like OP, who's account is just 6 hours old). The only reason this site has as many generous and kind users as it does imo, is because of the community it's developed and fostered. And this is something people shouldn't let slip. This site/community--at least the part everyone likes about it--isn't made on the users it attracts, but the users it develops.

I'm rambling, sort of on a larger issue I've had now for awhile, but I wanted to say thanks for showing understanding Shannon. People should be nicer to new users than they are now, no matter how dumb their actions may seem. The bitterness towards them, leeches, and all of the like that is so pervasive right now might just be why this community feels like it's "dying"--because that does kill it.

Yeah, it's not just Steamgifts, or about the freebies though. People sign up to regular old forums and ask very basic questions too. One of the sites I ran, was actually community manager (before it was sold and destroyed) had #1 ranking on Google for anime forums. People wouldn't look any further. They'd sign up and post their very basic "googleable questions" "What anime is this image from?" or "What shows are coming out this year?" or without reading the PG13 TOS "Can we post hentai here?"

People would get all uppidy and attack them instead of telling them how to use a reverse image site, and in the case of the "hentai question" explaining that the site's age group are largely 13-18 year olds. You know? That was something I came down especially hard on. Don't abuse people just because they ask a question. At least they're asking first and not firing away and getting themselves banned.

Your questions been answered, but welcome to the site Szerzenn! As a warning, generally people are pretty serious about posts having a point around here and not being silly, so I'd keep that in mind for the future. When it's a question, def make sure you've tried finding the answer through standard means. Or better, try just asking someone in the comments of a post. People are generally very nice and kind around here (despite how it may seem). By the way that reference on your profile--NICE. Don't see fellow fans of that show often at all. :D

If a level falls in the woods and no one's around to ear it, does it still make a sound?
