... why do publisher try to lock you out to your variant of your game and if you want to upgrade ... well buy a key outside or buy every dlc unbundled for 3x the price of the "super ultimate edition"

*edit i am a racing game fan, but im pissed, how codemasters is handling it with their dlc and version politics ...

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. I love rally games and someone offered to give me a copy of the base version of Dirt Rally 2.0 and I told them I didn't even want it because it's not worth playing like that because so much of the game is missing. Just look at all the additional content you are missing because they want to milk customers for money. I ended up getting the GOTY edition from a bundle.

I don't think I have ever paid for a single DLC. I can understand if a game has been out for a long time and the devs want to add an expansion that has a lot of new content and was never meant to be part of the original game, but it seems like so many devs now just prey on people by purposely selling them a partial game so so it sounds cheaper and then they have to pay more to get the full game. I don't buy DLC, microtransactions, or loot boxes.

I don't think, it has something to do with "lazyness" of the people, who work on that game. It is all about the money, though.

Not the devs. But the publisher or marketing guys.

I actually won Dirt 2.0 right here on SG .....
I was very happy at that point as I had no plan on buying it...

But then prices started dropping and I relized I have to pay more if I want to upgrade to the full version. It was cheaper just to buy full version with all DLCs ... That's jsut a spit in the face of customers..

Eventually I bought the full version on fanatical.... there was no point in the version I won here on SG... had to buy full game again.... I'm still bitter about that.. I mean I spent less and I got to play the game, but someone gifted a game to me that I had to buy again just to get locked content.

That's why I didn't take the persons offer for the base game for free. It costs too much to buy the DLC and the GOTY edition with all the DLC was currently cheap because it was in a bundle. I was talking to someone about splitting the bundle because I only wanted Dirt Rally 2.0 and they told me I could just have a key that they got from a previous bundle, but it was the base version. It was really generous of them, but it was actually cheaper to just buy the GOTY and on top of that get extra games from the bundle to give away.

Edit: I got my copy from Fanatical too, probably the same time you did. From this bundle.

Most of the dlc tracks are from Dirt Rally 1!

Can you please explain? I got interested in Dirt Rally 2.0 and started to watch the prices — I have enough of backlog to not grab it now, but the idea of learning tracks and perfecting them is appealing to me. Can't you buy additional ones as DLCs if/when you've had enough of the ones included in the base game?

I haven't started Dirt Rally 2.0 yet, I am still playing Dirt 4, so I am not 100% positive on how the game works, but yes, if you only have the base game, you can buy additional tracks and vehicles to race that are not included in the base game.

If you look at the Steam store page, you can currently buy the base game for $25. Then there is an additional 44 pieces of DLC that add up to $125 if you bought everything. These pieces of DLC are additional tracks and vehicles not included in the base game.

It would be expensive to buy all of it separately though, so they offered different packs that included some of the DLC. I don't think you can buy those anymore, but now they have the game of the year edition which includes everything. The GOTY edition is currently $45, but it has been sold cheaper in the past. I bought it in a fanatical pick and mix bundle where you can pick 3 games for $10 (or more at a steeper discount). This where I purchased the GOTY edition.

So… if I am fairly confident that I'll be interested in additional tracks (I'm quite confident that I don't need extra cars, tbh), then it is better to buy the GOTY edition straight away, instead of going with base + eventual DLCs, correct?

It looks like there are 11 pieces of DLC that are tracks or locations that add up to $43.89 just for those 11 pieces of DLC. Then there is also DLC for "Season 3&4" and another for "Colin McRae: FLAT OUT Pack". I don't know exactly what those 2 DLCs provide. I'm not sure if they give more tracks or locations that are not sold as separate DLC.

So yes, it would definitely be cheaper to get the GOTY edition over buying individual pieces of DLC. If you are not going to play it right now, I would wait to see if it goes on sale or shows up in another bundle.

Adding to AllTracTurbos answer - Flat out pack gives you specific challenges you have to finish under specific circumstances. It comes with little videos and stories about Colin, and then it gives hcallenges. For example - finish at least third with broken gearbox. Because that's how Colin finished in that specific year with that car. They are quit interesting, but difficult... Granted - I play with keyboard, but on those challenges it's even a struggle to win on easy :D And I'd say I'm above avarage in simulators.

And I suggest getting GOTY. adding DLC's one by one is not worth it... even of you choose to not play them. There was bundle on Fanatical that offered GOTY for 7 EUR .. so I suppose you could wait and such a deal will come up again in a bundle (maybe even on humble bundle). So I would definitelly suggest not getting the base game only.

Thank you! I've added the GOTY to my watch list on gg.deals. Incidentally it is heavily discounted on GMG now, but I'm training my iron will ;) If it's discounted now, it'll have the same discount later.

Cool to know about challenges, but that certainly sounds like something that'll be too hard for me.

I might not have put it on the lowest difficulty.
I did put it on easy, but you can switch difficulty from 1 - 100 and at some points it switches the categories as well. Easy is up to something around 40. So I'm not sure how low I set it. If you want a casual racer putting it on below 10 could probably make it pretty easy. I think there is very easy difficulty as well

short version, if it is physically like grid 2019 then the driving is unenjoyable, because you dont have driving feedback, sponsors are optical now and dont pay more (grid 2 had the same problem), customisation is ok, nothing groundbreaking, ai is really aggressive and even for a rub they'll hunt you with the nemesis system. It's like the ai had sopers btcc final in silverstone as a reference. car selection is alright and tracks will be 50% recycled ... some of them are guesses but with that, what i had seen wit codies games in the last 16 years it will likely be the matter

Yeah the reviews, even the professional ones, are less than stellar. Of course that doesn't stop them from selling other badly reviewed games at full price but now I get it.
Like someone else said, they probably are trying to make a buck quick before Humble puts it in their monthly

EA haven't released EA Play on Gamepass for PC yet, so there's your built in value. They're probably bilking the Steam tie-up for all it's worth + I don't think any of their games are available via UWP/Store, which GamePass needs.

These DLC versions are so damn greedy .
They don't even add "extra" content with them. Dirt 2.0 was ridiculous. They basically put most of the countries behind paywall and even regular cars were put in individual DLCs ... name it some kind of idiotic edition and people still pay for content that should have been in the base game.... (and you have to download 100+ GB of game even if you don't own the DLCs, and whatever you try to do you are prompted with with screen "buy in store" .. we have come to a point where $60 game is on the same level as a free pay to win game)

I totally understand adding extra stuff (like scotland, colin mcrae challenges - those are extra stuff that were not part of the original game) .... but the fact they took every country from first dirt rally and put all of those tracks behind paywall basically on day one of release was idiotic beyond comprehension. People still buy like crazy..... and now we have come to a point where we will get everything from codemaster hidden behind hundreds of costly DLCs .. and just wait till other big publishers catch the scent of this easy money raking scheme.

Wait till Dirt 5 realizes people are angry for the game not including rally mode, so they will publish 40 dollar DLC with rally in it. Name it "super duper ultra master perfect edition", but don't forget to buy Polo R5 for 5 bucks and golf 2 for 7 bucks (couse thats historic and we want to play on your nostalgy to earn more)

PS. I'm well aware that these big studios need to earn money and with growth selling everything for one base price might not be economically feasable. But many publishers find a good way of publishing DLCs and earning money. Putting base game behind paywall and still asking the full AAA game price is just lazy.

As i always say. DLCs are cancer of nowadays gaming.
"super duper ultra master perfect edition" .. exactly :] instead of giving us game u must pay 60€ for torso and other 60€ to get complete game... 60€ is already stupid price.. but we can pay 90 100 120€ for full version too :D

I'm not really against DLCs as such, for example Euro / American Truck simulator games do the DLCs decently. They have the base game, and they are working constantly creating new maps. Those have taken extra work, where not planned initially and I have nothing against paying for bunch of new features and additions to the game.. Same for games that offer different cosmetic items and some extra items that in no way make the game unplayable.

But I was already sick by Dirt 5 when they started advertising the game last summer and it hadn't even come out yet and they already had bunch of DLC's lined up that you can get even before game has been released.. I think at some point they have misunderstood what DLC's are all about.

Even delux and such editions supposedly offer something extra, not part of the main game behind another pay level. I was exited when Codemaster announced they have WRC license, but with how things are going, every country will probably be behind paywall, most of the teams will be behind paywall and I wouldn;t be surprised if they started blocking actual gameplay modes behind paywall.
