I Have to go to the dentist tomorrow to get two of my wisdom teeth pulled. One is very impacted and also has a cavity to add. Apparently it's sitting so close to the nerve that I have to go to a super fancy surgeon for the risky procedure.

To help calm my nerves, I decided to complain on SG but then make it up by bearing gifts :P .

A friend of mine needed full anestesia for the four wisdom teeth. You can do it.

Geez, glad they made it out okay :)
Turns out I need two teeth pulled because I should get the top pulled if I'm getting the bottom pulled. Still better then four though!

Stefanig, I had to go through the exact same procedure. Went to the specialist and it wasn't as bad as I expected. Try and block everything around you, close your eyes and think about nice things or experiences from the past. Girlfriend/boyfriend, good time with them, nice meal, movie, fun you had with friend or something, thing about those things and don't care about what is happening. Unless there is a really hot nurse, then check her out and think about her :)

Today I saw a gif of a dentist taking out his own wisdom teeth, he made it look so easy. It was amazing.

Good luck!

In case someone is curious, this is the gif. WARNING: Contains a little bit of blood.

I used to be VERY scared of dentists, expecially 'cause my first one was technically good but not a very sensitive person and he also liked to save up on the anesthesia... The 2 following dentists I went to (I had to switch again because the second doc retired) were different, I had a couple of rather complicated procedures but I felt pretty calm because I knew I was in good hands and I trusted them. If you are cared by good professionals it's gonna be as little unpleasant as possible ;).

Cheers and thanks for the GAs!

Almost the exact same thing happened to me. First dentist wanted to fill a "small" cavity without Novocaine, but turns out the cavity wasn't so small after all. I didn't go back to the dentist for maybe 10 years after that, until that same tooth started to hurt. I found a new dentist who was great (and replaced the filling from the bad dentist), then she moved and I found another who was fine also. I haven't had anything complicated though.

I know what you mean. I have no insurance and this is gonna cost me about 1000 dollars. The cost is why I let my tooth get this bad before going.

Well I'm going to the dentist the day after tomorrow. I have a broken tooth that's been broken for like 2 decades and my new dentist insists on fixing it... I hope he won't make it worse, it's pretty fine the way it is IMO :s

Maybe it will get infected later or something if you don't get it fixed? Either way, good luck!

I get nervous before serious medical procedures of all kinds, but I'm not scared of getting them done. The risk is low and the people doing it are skilled (one would hope - never go for the budget option...). I just do my best to keep myself out of their way and let them do their job.

So yeah, it's going to be uncomfortable, but just relax through it and it'll be over before you know it.

Words to live by: "This too shall pass."

For me it hurt quite much, yet had a friend that (almost) didn't feel a thing.
And you keep on spitting blood out for some bit after.

I haven't had a checkup for 2 years, also money issue.

When i was very little i used to be more scared to get my hair cut then going to a doctor or dentist.

I am not here to make you feel even more stressed, instead I aim to educate, which will hopefully make you feel better, (and perhaps more "in control").

Make sure you are not allergic, or hypersensitive to "articaine" or "lidocaine", the local anesthetic used by most dentists (which works faster than most alternatives). The downside of articaine is that a relatively large group (4.5%) of people react badly to it. Because of this, some dentists will use anesthetics that are safe for pretty much everyone but require the patient to wait at least an hour before the dentist can start the procedure.

You can ask your dentist what anesthetic he/she is using, and if you are scheduled to be getting articaine or lidocaine, you can ask for a small subcutaneous injection of the chemical first (tiny bit of the liquid injected just below the skin), in order to establish whether or not you are allergic or hypersensitive to it.

example

I am not a dentist, but I know all of this because my mother had an allergic reaction to articaine (she had some kind of seizure, and felt sick for about a week) after removal of a tooth.

The reason some folks react badly to articaine is because the mechanism that usually breaks this chemical down is missing in these people (usually they have a certain degree of cholinesterase-deficiency). As a result the body tries to get rid of it using a different method. This alternative method produces toxins that can cause paralysis and cancer (among other things) in the long term.

wow thanks for the info. I'll make sure to ask tomorrow before the procedure. I'm getting IV sedation anesthesia. Not sure what that has in it.

Oh, general anesthesia, nice I had one once and it was great. It's like, you just take a nap ^^ 👀
Apparently it's usually made with some of those drugs: http://www.apexoms.com/procedures/iv-sedation/general-anesthesia/

I am almost 100% sure IV anesthesia never contains "articaine" or "lidocaine" (they are local anesthetics after all), so that's a good thing. Only if you get an injection into your mouth you could be getting "articaine" or "lidocaine".

In short: You have nothing to worry about, and you can basically forget all I said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am sorry to worry you.

Good luck
