here are some i liked that i remembered. i can think of many more though :)
All these are finished in 1 to 4 hours. i found most of them on youtube or steam store.
Paid games:
Beginner's Guide, Industria, Metal Garden, It Takes a War, Far Lone Sails, Journey, Scanner Sombre
Free games:
BirdGut, Sheepy, Outcore, DDLC, Awaria, Helltaker, Clean Break, ENA Dream BBQ, Poco

Industria is underrated. Jank at times, but pretty good overall.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hmm, could you explain to me why Industria is underrated? I see that the reviews are pretty bad, so I'm curious why π€
Comment has been collapsed.
A lot of the criticism is fair, but I think a decent percent of the negative reviews trashed it because they assumed they were getting into another action-packed sci-fi shooter. A power fantasy, and that's not really what the game is. Underrated might not be the right word. Maybe misunderstood? Or IDK, maybe I'm reaching because I just want people to like what I like. :)
Having said all that, it's worth pointing out that the overall reviews really aren't that bad. 3 outta 4 people voted up.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, yes, I guess I somehow saw a lot of negative comments and missed the fact that overall the reviews are not that bad :)
I also noticed that I have it on epic, so itβs easy π

Thank you for your recommendations π I had some in my wishlist already, but now I have a few more :)
Poco looks absolutely adorable! Sometimes I don't get why some games are free, I'd definitely buy it π
Comment has been collapsed.
Glad you found some interesting.
Poco is amazing. it's so well made and funny. maybe it's free because it's short? but it's still awesome.
Industria is an interesting FPS game, i liked it a lot. It looks and plays nice. But there are a lot of bugs, it's short and the ending is a cliff hanger, so maybe thats why a lot of people dont like it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I feel like itβs a bit random sometimes, there are a lot of short games that are not free and they look worse π on the other hand thereβs more chance that people will play your game, idk..

I can't really make any recommendations, I think most of the games I enjoy playing are jrpgs, farming sims and the like. most of my lower hour games I finished were around the 8-12hour range. Games like the Deponia Series, Tinykin, Telltale games etc. I did enjoy Helltaker like Zepy up above though. Bump
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I like Deponia Series and Telltale games too π they are a bit longer indeed, don't think I can finish any of their games in one day :)
jrpgs are a bit difficult, I like anime, but when it's a game it feels a bit weird to me π₯

wow, thanks, this really looks like something for me, added all of them to my wishlist π GRIS is so beautiful!
VVVVVV reminds me of my university years, very nice game π

I've heard so much about Mouthwashing, but it just creeps me out π°
I love The Silent Age. It was free on epic so I just wanted to try. I didn't even pause once until I finished it, such a nice game π

Thanks :3 added Minami Lane to my wishlist, it looks really cute π (the other two I have already)

Some of my favorite games are short games. Some really good ones have already been mentioned, and others I didn't know about and will look for, so thank you for this thread!
Some that I recommend:
Free games:
I also recommend a podcast I really like, focused exclusively on short games, called The Short Game Podcast

Thanks ^^ nice games :) goose games looks funny, I'm gonna try it π
The whole podcast about short games is so cool! It doesn't work in browser though, idk why π€

hm, what do you like about it? I don't mind idlers, but why this one? :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks ^^ they look fun, so I just added all of them to my wishlist :D

Thanks :) this doesn't look like something I'd choose myself, but I added it to my "maybe" list :)

My way to find games is to check every new Steam release on steamdb and ignore or wishlist them :D Usually, during my morning coffee. But I do not recommend this, it is very time-consuming to get yourself up to date, when you only need to check the daily releases. It is only like 10 min for me now.
I have a new method to choose my next game. I choose games randomly from my library. I don't think about it too much. I just started one. If I like it, I play it through, or at least for a while, then I start the next. The only rule is that I have to have no or very little knowledge about that game, so no popular titles. It is fun, and I found some really sleeper hit titles this way.
Here are some story based cute puzzle games, cozy games or just some wierd ones that worth the time:
Conga Master - It is Snake, with aliens. Very fun
The Corridor - short experimental game
The curse of the monkey island - my fav pnc
Dude, Stop! - experimental puzzle game. Funny as hell
EalΓΊ - stop-motion puzzle game with a mechanical mouse
Dream bbq - some weird shit, and it is free. I can't really explain this game
Fort Meow - sadly short pillow fort builder
Garden life - it is somewhat longer, but super cozy and easy to pick up later
Grim Fandango - my second fav pnc
Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer - funny short pnc
Leila - it is for girls
Lilith Wants to Buy Your Soul - it is a free, short experimental game
Little Inferno - super cozy and weird. Don't burn the free hug coupon!
Manual Samual - Short, very funny physics-based puzzle game
The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo - more like a surreal experience than a game
Paper Trail - cozy puzzle game with interesting, but underused mechanics
Please, Touch The Artwork 2 - free, surreal, cozy
Press X to Not Die - short funny QTE FMV with some terrible acting :D
Reviver - cozy narrative puzzle game
Samorost - free, short, surreal and cozy
She Remembered Caterpillars - very cute puzzle game until you start reading
Puzzle Agent 1-2 - Twin Peaks-inspired, funny and weird puzzle game
Agent A: A puzzle in disguise - great stylized puzzle game
Darkestville Castle - Curse of MI meets Nighmare before Christmas
Luna and the see - free, sweet pnc
Some free games without comment
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure
Doki Doki Literature Club!
The Happyhills Homicide
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

wow, thanks for all your recommendations ^^ I think I just added almost all of them in my wishlist/library π
EalΓΊ also looks nice, but why is it so expensive even on sale, for a 1-3h game π±
I still want to learn to just blindly pick a game and just play it instead of spending hours on choosing something and then being able to play only a few hours that I had left π
Comment has been collapsed.
EalΓΊ is probably expensive, because it is a fairly new game that sold decently. It will come down eventually, and frankly, you (and sadly, me too) don't play too many games a year, so it can wait. Similar case with the Annapurna games (Publisher of Stray and some other highly praised indie titles). They are great, but they don't get bundled, and you need to wait like 2 years for a decent discount. I didn't bring them up because they are on my backlog, and I tried to stick to games that I actually played. But here. to the T looks really cute. Also, ARTE France has short, beautiful games, but I only played To hell with ugly, which was nice. I read the book after, and the book, oh boy :D. And I want to check 30 birds from them one day. But, I don't want to overwhelm you, so I stop, but you can always check my library. I started curating my games and try to avoid trash, so I can recommend like 90% of my games :).
Comment has been collapsed.
Donβt worry, Iβm already overwhelmed π
(Just added another 10+ game to my wishlist, hehe)

hm, it's a bit on a long side though. how creepy is it really? I like the idea, but I don't like when it's too scary π
Comment has been collapsed.
Its a Hp lovercraft cult thriller its not very scary, I also don't like very scary games. If you are into less scary cult games try vampyr(9hrs) and the sinking city(6hrs) they are a bit longer but amazing games.
Comment has been collapsed.
Good to know, thanks βΊοΈ I played some board games from Lovecraft world, so I like the atmosphere of it. Sinking city also looks nice ^^

There are a lot of short games (less than 7 hours to 100%) that I really enjoyed, in addition to Behind the Frame there's also:-
A Short Hike
Toem
Venba
Abzu
Inside
Gris
Minit
Creaks
King of the Bridge
Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion
When The Past Was Around
The Pedestrian
There are also Little Nightmares and Oneshot, they are a bit longer ( less than 15 hours to 100%) than the ones previously mentioned but are still considered short.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks ^^ I already own part of them, the rest added to my wishlist π
I also have Little Nightmares, but it's a bit too creepy for me π

I'll just add one game noone's mentioned yet: To the moon.
And thanks for the thread: with time i started liking short games more and more so I'll definitely write some suggestions down.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks ^^
I'm checking every game people recommend and they post new games faster than I can check it, haha. But there're so many nice games, my wishlist's never been this big before π
Comment has been collapsed.
Killer frequency (about 5 hours)
Slay the Princess (point is you can replay to get many different ending, one run will barely take any time)
Fears to Fathom series (each game is very short ranging from like 30mins for the first one to 3 hours for the last entry, very good if you like horror)
Botanicula, or Happy Game (short point and clicks)
Then Iβll add another vote for A Short Hike and Untitled Goose Game
Comment has been collapsed.
Your suggestions remind me that i have to play Killer Frequency and Short Hike, since i bought them already :p
But i've been busy with Slay the Princess. It may be short to do 1 run, like you said. But if you want all achievements its gonna take a while. I'm over 15 hours and i still have more than half to go.
Comment has been collapsed.
Killer frequency is such an underrated gem, it's impressive how they manage to create tension in it, PLEASE do play it!!
You're right that Slay the Princess will take a while if you wanna see all the options, but I felt like I saw enough and was satisfied at about 5 hours

Thanks ^^ I played Happy Game when I was laying in bed with a fever and had a feeling that developers had it too π

Here's a second wave of short games I liked playing:
Toem, Titan Station, Little Inferno, The Corridor, Among the Sleep, Before your Eyes, Ellision Effect, Edith Finch,
Assemble with care, Cats in Time, Dreaming Sarah, Estranged Departure, Mouthwashing, Gone Home, Frog Detective,
Don't Touch This Button, Her Story, Stories Untold, Exit 8, Rumu, Silt, Simulacra, Untitled Goose Game, Underland
FREE:
High Entropy, Microbial Sector, Answer Knot, Star Fetchers, Unsorted Horror, We Went Back,
The Looker, i feel very lonely and i dont remember my name, Project Hailstorm, Pocketdate

I just got some mixed feelings, when I was checking your games :)
a bunch of creepy, horror, atmospheric games and then some cute game with cats, frog detective and goose π
Thanks for more recommendation, I added a few ^^

If you have 20 minutes to kill, get DOGWALK (free on Steam). An amazing pleasure to play through (as I did just yestersay).
Generally, I love short games because I can finish them quickly and move on to the next thing!
Comment has been collapsed.
Free on itch.io and the official website, paid on steam if you want to support the dev: The Dark Queen of Mortholme. You can get all endings in ~half an hour, but it's a great experience.
Check it out HERE
Edit, thanks for recommending lost in play! I played the other two, but Lost in play was not on my radar and it turns out someone in my steam family has it.

Thanks :) The Dark Queen of Mortholme looks really nice, looking forward to play it ^^

Hi everyone :)
What are your favorite short games? Something you can finish withing one day perhaps?
Sometimes I have busy weeks and get only a day or two to relax and play something. It's always so painful to start playing a game knowing that I have to stop and I won't be able to play it for a while.
