Kinda related: does anyone know any idler that is not ASF that works on Linux?

curious why you don't want to use ASF? It is so linux friendly.

I want something that is easier to use and set up than it is to download the game and start it (something like Idle Master used to be before it went RIP and it never worker on Linux anyways) and last time I tired ASF, which to be fair was probably around 2 years ago, it was an complicated and confusing setup that had 43534534 settings that I had a hard time understanding what exactly they are for and required a lot of extra stuff to be installed. So I guess I was either doing something wrong (even after taking a look at the documentation) or things have changed since then.

There is a web config for settings.

The settings are purely optional, other than changing the bot enabled from disabled and entering username and password. Just getting it running requires nothing else.

By default ASF idles (at least it used too) a bunch of games at once and I do not like that and I remember struggling to find a setting that changes that. But I will give ASF another chance and see if I can get it working as I want now :)

Only because that's the efficient way to do it. Some accounts can take 2-3h of playtime before they start dropping cards, so it's best to idle them all together for that waiting period. "HoursUntilCardDrops" to 0 is the one you want I think.

Yep I know, but my account isn't limited that way so it is pointless for my account to be idled that way. Thanks for the info, I will look for that setting, much appreciated!

All good comments. Only thing I want to add is although it takes a bit of setup (I think it's the Github page that has a great step by step guide), once you've generated your configuration file, it's almost effortless in subsequent farming sessions, just one terminal command.

I just change the steam_appid.txt file for hl2.exe and run that so I can still use my PC while idling without giving some potentially dodgy program access to my account.

hl2 = ?

In ..Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2 you can edit the steam_appid.txt file to contain the appid of the game you want to idle (visible in the store page and in the cards page). Just run hl2.exe from that folder, ignore the eror message and drag it out of the way, and as far as Steam is concerned, you're playing the game with the appid you entered. It stops when you close the error box.

Might be a very stupid question, but why are so many people interested in farming cards? Is it for the money or to level up your steam account? And if it is for money, how can you make it profitable if most cards are only worth like 6 cents. But again, might be a very stupid question so sorry in advance.

I'm guessing a lot of people have multiple accounts if they're selling them for cash. I don't really idle that much myself (just occasionally), and it's purely to level up the Steam account for no reason other than I want to get a higher level... :-|

I just selled a reflectan Yakuza Kiwami card for around 10 euros but most cards cost 1cnt. Totally worth it to farm anyway if you ask me.

If you're not interested in the badges, you can get a bit of credit to put towards a game.
Some of them sell for a lot, and even 6 cents is noticeable if you have 50 cards. That's an indie game or DLC on sale "free", right there.

If you are not scared of a complicated-looking setup, ASF is the way to go.
https://github.com/JustArchiNET/ArchiSteamFarm
You can farm multiple accounts with it (although that may not interest you, yet), you don't have to have steam running for it to work and you can also use it to easily activate free games and much more.

Here is the setup guide, in case you are interested:

I'm kinda interested in this now, I've never done card farming before, does it add play time to the games it farms? because if so then I'm out

well, the only way for the cards to drop is to play the games so yes, these apps add playtime

you're welcome, my man. I'm pretty new to the farming scene, so there might be more experienced members here who might know more than me, but as far as I know, there is no app that just gives you cards without adding the playtime.

Same, I like to have a fresh start and only the real time I've spent in the game (just my personal preference), although it's nice to have some extra change I think I can live without it so I can have my real time :P

Yeah, I farmed cards for a bit, but I stopped on my main account because there were a bunch of games I wanted to get around to playing, and having them show up in "Unplayed" is easier to see them than when they have a few hours on them, haha. Now I still use ASF for my alt account, though a while ago it stopped automatically sending the cards to me and I haven't gone back and fixed it yet, haha.

Also you can "Blacklist" games from it's idling list by adding their IDs to a file, so I've been tempted to do that and start again, since there's quite a few games I probably won't ever play, but I think there's still more that I'd want to play, so I'd have a lot of IDs to add, and I'm not that motivated for those other cards, haha. :P

Most people who do card farming either don't care about their playtime or use other accounts beside their main one, but most of them only do it for the free games they get in giveaways (like the indiegala one since they're random and are mostly good only for their cards) and not with the games they want to play.
In your case, with a profile with a good amount of great games you still haven't played, if you want to farm cards and don't want to "ruin" your account playtime I reccomend to just get a second account where to put keys of games with cards you aren't interested in or you already have.
You can farm the cards there and trade it to your main account later, but beware that you need to get 5$ on that account for it to work but it's easy since you can just send it from your main account (if I'm correct, the restrictions changed a lot of time), and having a second account can always come in handy (more free cards and items during events, can use as "storage" for some of your items, can use the family sharing feature and you can borrow it to friends if someone wants to play something from your library, and probably other stuff).

I did an experiment with around 2,200 games with cards. ASF told me it would take 14 weeks to drop all cards. IM(now extended) did the job in just 3 days. So I'm still using Idle Master extended as the program can idle 30 games simultaneously.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

With this numbers it seems like you got 30 cards every hour for 3 days, but that could only work if the max number of cards was 3 for every game so it seems a little strange since there are many with even 6 cards to drop.
ASF probably told you 14 weeks because it will sometimes switch to farm 1 game at a time in the complex setting, so it would be very slow like that, but it's not specialized in farming cards only but doing other stuff too.
Does IM extended have any problems or may cause some if you idle 30 game simultaneously? I was thinking of starting idling again in my steam library since I wanted to craft some cards during the summer sale but ASF would be too slow.

I never had any issues with Idle Master extended or the original IM even if idling 30 or more games at once. In my "experiment" there were of course games with partially dropped cards by playing. I got around 6,500 cards in said 3 days.
Steam had the "drop on exit bug" don't know if they fixed it ever.

From what I know the "drop on exit bug" works with ASF too so it should still work with idlemaster now.
Sucks that it requires you to not be the whole time afk but it's still nice, thanks!

If you have multiple keys of games, some people will idle them for you and send back the cards.

As a matter of fact idling peoples games is a hobby of mine.
