+1 for that, my first game on PS1 :D
Before that i was playing Sonic, The smurfs on megadrive and mario on Nintendo.
I'd say all of them are good for a 5y/o
Otherwise i just saw there's Squirt's Adventure on sale, don't let the name fool you it's a game for kid. Don't know of what age tho i don't have kids so....
Otherwise if you're not satisfied with these ones i'd say postal2 :P

The NES era games are pretty much perfect for kids, grew up playing the original SMB, SMB2, and SMB3. The Megaman series is also really fun and colorful. Super Metroid would be good, its got that nice, kinda creepy but cool atmosphere filled with monsters you can blow up with artillery (literally, samus is a friggin' walking tank). Really, the entire NES and SNES catalogue would be grand, barring a few oddities. There's also the Genesis/Master system games that are also really good.
Mind you, young me was never good at these games, but man did I love playing them.
Whatever you do choose, play through it first, and stay with them. Some games, like Ocarina of Time, have parts that will terrify kids (anything with redeads and the entirety of the Shadow Temple) and one game, Willow for the NES, managed to make me put that game away for about a decade due to the freaking undead pig mages.

He maybe only 5yo .... But doesnt mean he dumb... I did grow up with game like Doom, Earthworm's Jim, Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy... And kids learn faster than us adult :') I don't want to know how my father was feeling getting beaten by his 5yo at Mortal Kombat x).. .. I miss being a kid .. I was better at video game than i am now lol
PS: Don'T Forget bomberman 1 and 2 :P ...

Thats quite the contradiction. Gone from "never" to "definitely" played it before in the same sentence!
People cared about it because it was fun, easy to get into but difficult to master (tactical), and could be played solo or multiplayer. Maybe try Bomberman World on a PS1 emulator.

whats wrong with my username? Been using it since i was ohh 8 maybe? (battle.net), hardly a horrible thing, its never taken, and I never use it for things that are important, like oh I dunno, bank accounts or something. there is a disparity between personal and professional life.

My nephew just turned 6 years old, and has been playing video games for a long time. We are careful with what games he plays as we don't want anything too violent. He especially loves Minecraft and all the Lego genre games - Star Wars, LOTR, POTC, DC, Marvel etc.

Hello all, I have be trying to come up with games for young children. I am very very heavily leaning towards classics from my childhood, because A) I really think a lot of the new stuff is worst than when we were kids, and B) The download is smaller, and that is really important.
I played a lot of the Humongous Entertainment games when I was a kid, so that was a no-brainer. But I was wondering if there was anything else you would suggest?
Specifically, I was wondering about possibly some classic non-children games that might still be playable by children? Secret of Monkey Island type deals, but I cannot think of any that do not specifically aim at high cognitive power and experience with prior adventure games. The Dig and Full Throttle, for example are fairly simple games (controls), but also seem to have slightly too complex puzzles to be a viable option. And it is not like they need the ability to complete these games, I played a lot of games long before I had any possibility of beating them.
Or what about something platformy or FPSes? Does anyone have experience with 5 year olds and Doom-likes? The single axis would definitely make it fairly easy to control.
