Valve has sent out an email to developers about an upcoming feature.

“Your local multiplayer games will soon be improved with automatic support for Remote Play Together on Steam. Remote Play Together is a new Steam feature that enables two or more players to enjoy local multiplayer games over the internet, together. We think this feature will be very valuable for customers and developers and are excited about the beta. We've provided an FAQ at the bottom of this message which we think addresses most questions and concerns."

“All local multiplayer, local co-op, and split-screen games will be automatically included in the Remote Play Together beta, which we plan to launch the week of October 21. If you have any questions please contact us.”

That would be great, there are enough games that look nice but I have nobody to play local with and I am looking for games to play over the internet with my best friend

This is great. I don't multiplayer often myself but assuming it works well I'm sure a lot of people will be able to have fun with a lot of games they otherwise couldn't because local multiplayer only.

So this should work with shared split screen games like Sumoman too?

I'd be thrilled about something that allows games that are not couch co-op to be played in local co-op but that, I don't really have any use for.

That also needs Remote Drink Beer Together to be as much fun.

So true :D

but do both (or more) players to own the game?
because on local co-op you would play on the same PC but with 2/multiple controllers....
so would it still be possible to play if only one of them owns and hosts the game???

I assume everyone needs to own the game themselves, but I could be wrong

Only the host needs to own it.

Oh so even with that Remote Play Together, only 1 needs to own it? I did not expect that at all, but guess is they make it as a host system, that does make sense!

Sounds to me like it's streaming the game to the second player and counting his input as a different device. That means it will require a good upload speed on the hosts side and even then the other player(s) will have some input lag, basically steam link where each person can use his own keyboard/gamepad as a separate input.

If it will be like that, it doesn't sound that good to be honest, than I rather it needs a separate game so everyone can at least enjoy the game as well as they can, though costwise a stream is better, playwise separate game would be a better option.
So let's wait and see how it will turn out in the end ^^

Let's hope it allows for both, so everyone can enjoy it the best way they can.

Well it's not really even a new thing so I wouldn't be surprised if Valve are partnering or competing with Parsec which does exactly that. I haven't tried it yet but I've heard that it's really good and reading the "How it works" page it seems to be sort of a video sharing solution using a custom made protocol for low latency video sharing.

I never used that program but I knew there were already programs that could do that, we will have to wait and see how Steam will implement this, I hope it will work well and not just a simple stream with lag, because if it's like that, I might pass

"Only the host needs to own the game, and can invite remote friends to play online!"

Yeah good but almost every game that has local co-op, has online co-op as well. Kinda useless?

Unfortunately that's not true. There are quite some games with only local coop. E.g. Guacamelee.

There are definitely some games, but i don't think there are too many of them. Let's say %10 of co-op games? Or maybe higher? or lower?

In the end, more feature is better, but i can't say that was a long waited one.

I think its better to have something that you probably won't use then to need thing that doesn't exist =)

Let's check for an easy answer:

Online Multi-Player 3,590 results match your search.
Local Multi-Player 2,374 results match your search.
Both: 881 results match your search.

Online Co-op 1,550 results match your search.
Local Co-op 1,525 results match your search.
Both 362 results match your search.

So the right answer is more than 75%.

Honestly that is surprising to me.

That is so far from the truth. Online coop isn't so easy to implement; it is a challenge for many small teams and they choose rather not to do it if they couldn't do it right.

What is the difference between Shared/Split screen vs Local co-op?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As far as I know, local co-op means like Mario has, you can play with multiple people but all see the same screen, split screen means every player gets their own small screen, so the screen is literally split per player

Also co-op means you play as a group to beat the game, just multiplayer can also mean you play to beat the other player.

Yes, I was just replying to the split screen vs local co-op, indeed co-op means playing together as a team while multiplayer usually means against each other

The question was bit flawed tho. It's shared screen vs split screen, not both of them vs co-op. A local co-op can use either one of the screen types just like local regular multiplayer.

Ah than I understood the question differently, but it's exactly what you said, so I am not really needed to say more about it ^^

The idea is AWESOME. However, is it related to the "Steam Remote Play" on mobile devices that isn't working in a way it's supposed to work? I am talking about not being able to remotely play your games from any Internet other than your Wifi network that has your Steam acc connected to.

That's just because US mobile internets are from the stone age, so it takes fighting to get any mobile device to just freely use 4G instead of pausing downloads or just not working while waiting for WiFi. It's beyond their comprehension that some people might actually want to use mobile data for everything.

According to Alden Kroll, it's only for shared/split-screen games: https://twitter.com/aldenkroll/status/1182148560768290816

Which are still the only ways to have a local multiplayer game. If people have different screens, it's not local.

So if i decide to remote play a game that i own, the second player will stream the game so he doesnt need a good pc?

Yes, they don't even need to own the game /have it installed.

By far the best thing steam had done at least for my tastes. Damn i havent been that happy with gaming since ages. I start to really like the valve of last months, so many innovations and new projects. I hope they will stay like that.
