Wait, so by 'shitting all over the original' you meant it was better than the original?
I thought you meant that it was a disgrace towards the original.

wrecking still means the same thing though. I misunderstood as well. Perhaps 'surpassing'.

Yes, using negative words to mean something positive is confusing, especially since pop culture has started doing it with more and more words.

I'd change it to:
"Has a cover of a song by a band you love ever surpassed the original?"
Or something like that.

Oh my god, that is a horrible sentence.

I was under the impression that the word 'god' when used in this sense, as in "my" God or "the" God, is supposed to be capitalized.

Yeah, was going to mention that one, too. Disturbed has created pretty amazing covers of already great songs quite often:

Fade to Black Not a fan of the original though - did not know it when I first heard the song and thought it was specifically written for David Draiman because he sings it so well.
Shout (2000) Already like the original, but Disturbed improved it quite a bit IMO.
Land of Confusion Like both the cover and original a lot.

And the big exception to the rule:
I still haven't found what I'm looking for Like neither the original nor the cover...

Was the first which came to my mind, but I also like the original. Therefore I'd call it a great and also necessary cover, since it provides another view, but does it really "surpass" the original?

I've heard a few remasters of Kdrew's "last train to paradise" that I like better than the original

Don't want to knock Halsey, but surpassing Bieber isn't an achievement, is it? xD

I don't really like him but i don't wanna knock him, either. =) I would still say that's an achievement not because Justin's so good because it doesn't feel like a cover to me. Her voice just fits right in.

This cover doesn't surpass the original song and the great voice of Ronnie James Dio but it's a nice one

I've had a friend disown me because I said that the Johnny Cash cover was better than NiN's version of "Hurt". Don't care, it's still true.

Daugherty did a great job, but I still like the original better. )

I find this cover preferable to the original.

And of course, Whitney Houston killed it with her remake of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You."

Under the Runes by Sigh (no youtube link, I can't find one anymore), one of the weirdest things I've ever heard.
Eleanor Rigby by Pain, obviously not as good as the original but I still love it.
Land of Confusion by Disturbed, despite the whole high school anticapitalist imagery I find it pretty good.

Pulp's cover of She's a lady
Joan Jett Crimson and clover hugely influenced by Joan Jett's eyes
This Mortal Coil, Song to the Siren - the original version by Tim Buckley

Last one : Next, a cover of Au suivant - not that I like the cover more, but I really like it, it's different in a good way

Does this count as a cover?
