I liked my debian, why don't you just use it, instead of something based on it? But if you really want something else, my friend was using Mint and was more than happy about her choice, so I think you might get to like it too. Maybe just try installing and checking it on the virtual machine first, and then decide for yourself if it's really going to suit you.

i kinda don't like base debian, using it at work. i had Linux Mint 9, i think, but it's too old for now. Have CrunchBang on laptop, but somehow i don't like it on desktop, as i think it's superb on laptop.
have tried a bunch of distributions, didn't like Poseidon, Puppy :D and even didn't like Backtrack
will do on VirtualBox, just as I have extremely slow internet connection, it's taking a lot of time now :(

What's wrong with being debian/ubuntu based?
Linux Mint or Ubuntu actually. I prefer Linux Mint (or ubuntu + mate interface) because I hate unity interface and I'm used to old good old gnome 2.
Advantages of these two distros:
Most packages from 3rd parties come pre-compiled
Easy to install and manage
If you encounter an error, or need a custom installation, how-tos and solutions are easier to find a solution, community behind these distros are huge. Even if there is no solution yet, there's askubuntu.
I desperate for a windows game or app, playonlinux works best on these two distros, also you know about wine (this is from my personal experience actually).
Apart from these, no big difference.
If you are desperate about not using a Debian/ubuntu based distro, try fedora or maybe even opensuse.

May I ask why? The UI? The package management ? Ubuntu is also based on Debian.
So you both want it to be Debian based and not Debian based? O.o

i know what it's based on :)
as much as i have tried different distributions, ubuntu based always have too much stuff i don't fukcing need
so, why do i need to spend time uninstalling stuff i don't need, when i can install something without those things in first base

You might want to look at Ubuntu Server Edition
It's like the desktop edition but without some of the bloat.

Lubuntu
its lightweight, user friendly UI and because its debian and ubuntu based, there is big community for it so most problems are already solved

why go "Debian based" while you can go strictly Debian? :> My server is running debian and I had no problems with it for 4 years straight :>
And for all Ubuntu lovers - you know what "Ubuntu" stands for? I's an actual word from native African tribe and it translate to "I'm too stupid/lazy to set up Debian" xD

I use Arch, but I'm not sure you would like it.
To get better recommendations, you should tell us things like what you're looking, your level of experience, and your past experiences.
Also you should keep in mind that distros and their desktop environments are not inextricably tied to each other.

I'm leaving my Win 7 for now and want to go back to Linux, so I want your suggestions on Linux Distributions. I want something Debian based (preferably not Ubuntu based).
Right now I'm thinking about Linux Mint, so version suggestions are much appreciated
Suggestion rules:
At least two sentences with no less than 10 words in each about why
Preferably Debian based distribution
