Arcanum

Got Arcanum now. Would like a higher resolution in game so I can see more of my surroundings. Any bug fix mods are also wanted for obvious reasons.

Half tempted to get that and Dark Reign. Accursed lack of money, I'd get Dark Reign 2 as well if I could pull it.

As far as western RPGs go, I'm have mixed opinions on them. I can enjoy the stories, but the combat system in most of those games normally drive me away. I enjoyed stuff like Alpha Protocol, Jade Empire and Mass Effect, but doubt this will be much different from the older ones like Icewind Dale and Fallout in that.

I also prefer playing a single player over a party, normally a chatty rogue taking everything and charming everyone. :D
Does this game support non combative players, or is fighting necessary?

Does the GOG version of this game feature any updates towards wide screen and higher resolutions, or would I be stuck with the old 800 600 / 1024 800 resolutions?

Arcanum is a nice game, clumsy tho. Runs on W7 just fine, there's a widescreen fix but it has a few bugs.

Arcanum is definitely worth it! Still have a version of it on CD, so not sure about the gog changes. You can play the game with either turn-based or real-time combat. There are a ton of options for configuring your character and usually multiple ways around any of the main quest options - so a chatty character is viable (its even possible to talk your way out of some fights and have your enemy join your team). The whole magic vs technology approach was also a cool concept.

Arcanum is one of the best games ever made. Period.

You can play alone but its better to have one companion ( the first you get at the very beginning ) as he will help you a lot with the main story.

You can totally play a chatty charismatic rogue elf ( even prostitute ), you can learn magic to make people like you, wear nicer clothing etc. Fighting will still be necessary, but you could either let a party do the job or be a necromancer or build machines ( but are you sure you don't want to use say a golem and a flamethrower ? Or a mechanical spider and a sniper rifle ? )

There are mods, including for a higher resolution. http://terra-arcanum.com/drog/dest/highres.html

Two examples : at the beginning, there is bank about to be robbed, you can help the robbers, stop them, devance them, rob them after, or alert the sherif.

At some point there is a manor, you can fight your way in, go trough sewers, or pretend to be a waiter.

Dungeons are full of necessary fights, travels too but you can avoid those last ones by learning teleportation.

The birth of steampunk in a magic world is awesome.

The combat system is similar to fallout since its made by the same guys and on the same engine, as a matter of fact there are several references to fallout during the game.

You cant live without Arcanum, one of the greatest games ever created! You can do soooo much in there, the world, the characthers, voice work, customizing and choosing, traveling, questing, leveling, the story, best game ever! If you never played, you must play it now! Yes, buy it, highly suggested!

Arcanum plays a lot like Baldur's Gate and Fallout, I think it actually runs on a modified Fallout engine.

I don't think you can play as a talky non-combat person and win without taking cohorts; Combat is necessary more often than not, you might be able to talk down bosses but not the mobs throughout the dungeon. All these older games are based on stuff like D&D which was dungeon crawling more than anything else.

As for the resolutions and stuff, the GOG download doesn't have the high res stuff built in but works with the mods.

Hmmmm, I remember having a lot of fun with Arcanum, but I've never actually finished the game. Wonder if it was buggy or if I was distracted by something shiny and forgot about it... :)

The gog forum for a specific game is usually a great place to find mod/unofficial patch info, so check there if you haven't already. Perhaps because (unlike with steam) many gog purchasers actually install and play the games they bought. :)

This sale is making me want too many titles as well, Delta. GoG has so many good titles and I'm constantly having to pass on many purchases I would like to make.

On a completely unrelated and off-topic note, according to your recent activity, I assume you got a good internet, now?

I am now with a new ISP now. Much slower, but cheaper and uncapped.

Oh, hell yeah. Unlimited internet is worth the wait for the downloads you make.
I'm still stuck with a very crappy (capped at 20GB a month, $90) slow ass internet service, but I'm attempting to move in the months to come. Hopefully, I'll have a "decent" internet by then...

I had to wait nearly 7 hours for a game. I haven't done that since the days I had dial up (though those games were measured in MB, not GB). Its a serious hit when it used to be most games I'd go make a hot drink and then start the game.

Heh, I used to download a game in a night or two. Max Payne 3 (30GB) took me approximately 20 hours to download, I think.

A simple look at the game forum would show you this as the first sticky:arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/must_have_arcanum_fan_patches_widescreen_and_more

Arcanum is one of my favorite rpgs and I snapped it up as soon as they carried it in 2010, so I've not played it since about 2011 and that was on Windows XP. I don't know if you're using Win8.1 but you might have some issues. These are the official fan patches that should fix most issues though:
