We would prefer something not inappropriate, something the whole family can enjoy.

Something popular. Preferably not anime, animated, and not R rated.

And in English

The LEGO Movie. Oh God it's so good.

Or really any Pixar movie, enjoyable for all ages.

They said not animated, so that's why I didn't suggest any cartoons. Its kind of hard to find good family, non-animated movies.

They said not anime, not R rated, but didn't put a "not" before animated. I figured they wanted animated but I may have misread it.

OP, even if you normally don't like animated films you should give some of them a shot. Some of the best family movies around are animated.

I noticed that too, but thought the not animated was implied, since they were telling us things they didn't want. Otherwise, I'd always suggest The Incredibles. Great movie for anyone.

My suggestion was going to be Requiem for a Dream. Showing that to kids would be an effective way to scare them off of drugs. Worked for me.

What about Legend of a Drunken Master (English dubbed)? Jackie Chan martial arts movies are always a blast.

Its from a few years ago, but I really enjoyed Sky High, despite it being a family movie.

The Princess Bride is PG, but even our six year-old liked it.

Another classic, despite being a family friendly movie. I grew up watching it, and still have a big soft spot for it.

Old Yeller is an old Disney movie, as are Mary Poppins, and The Longest Journey. Most of the old Disney movies (the non-cartoon ones, like The Apple-Dumpling Gang) were good for the entire family. As for the garbage they've been putting out lately, not-so-much.

The first few Muppets movies were pretty good, too. The Muppets Movie, Muppet Treasure Island, and The Muppet Christmas Carol.

The first three Spy Kids movies can be watched with the entire family. (The others suck pondwater.)

There are many other movies, of course (e.g. Babe, Matilda, The Last Starfighter,The Karate Kid), but it really depends on the ages of the kids and what you guys like to watch. Are you looking for stuff to watch on Netflix?

The Goonies, Back to the future, anything that was done in the 80's is great. Nowadays making a movie for kid is more an excuse for making a shitty movie like The Lorax or Turbo

Ok, now for real: I enjoyed adaptations of Terry Pratchett books: The Colour of Magic, Hogfather and Going postal. It has that fairy tale atmosphere with intelligent satire.
