Hi all

This summer I got my hand on Fallout 3 GOTY + Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition on a 75% off deal.

I start playing Fallout 3 and soon after I start encountering some annoying issues (see this topic here)
After cleaning the system, the temperatures went down but the problems didn't go away. And since I tried everything that crossed my mind without luck, I decided to finish the game, ignoring the problems.

Now, I am playing NV. I played for about 2 hours without any problem and I actually thought this game was less buggier than F3GOTY but unfortunately I was wrong.

It looks like every time I am trying to buy/sell something from/to someone, if I exit the trade dialog and try to talk to that person or select the trade option again, the video driver (and the game of course) crashes.
More over, I tried to exit the chat dialog and try again, without luck. I also tried leaving and re-entering the room but it didn't work.
However, if I enter another building, exit that building and re-enter the room with the one I talked earlier, it works.

The problem is (and it also was, in F3GOTY) that every time I want to leave the trade dialog or the chat the FPS goes down, to nearly 2-3 FPS and the image start flickering for 1-2 seconds. I tried to find out what is causing this and it look like the video driver becomes unresponsive for 2-3 seconds or it crashes and it successfully recovers, except those moments stated above.

I tried reinstalling the game and the video driver, I tried running the game on the lowest settings (I run it all maxed out), I tried running the game in compatibility mode (since it seams F3GOTY does not support Windows 7 x64 LOL), I tried applying the multicore fixes posted on Bethsoft forum, but nothing worked.

And this is even more annoying considering the fact that most of my friends played the cracked games and had no problems :|

Any ideas?

Ok, enough with the trolling.
Have you tried installing game on fresh system? Or uninstalling steam and deleting by revo uninstaller and than installing it again? Updated drivers?
Check your cpu! I used to play B:AA and had similar issue with CPU temp. It seems that there was a certain temp (58-60°c) it hit and games would become unplayable (like 2-3 fps). So check your CPU for problems aswell.

I reinstalled Steam and the video drivers. Also I checked (and constantly check) the temperatures. CPU temp never went over 65 in-game and VGA temp is constant at 60 in-game.
I know CPU temp is a little too high and intend to buy a new cooler (don't know why I didn't get one when I got my system LOL)

In B:AA CPU and VGA went up to 80 with all on max and PhysX on med and had no problems with it.

The only game that caused me problems (other than F3GOTY) was Borderlands 1 and that because it is using an older PhysX driver than the one I have.

As for that low FPS issue, it only happens when I exit a chat dialog. When I click on exit/goodby option the dialog fades out slowly. That's the moment I get the low FPS and the crash.

Have you tried the torrented (pirated) version of the game?

Yup I did. No luck.

Very strange then, not sure what the problem is. You might be better off just getting it on console/not bothering with it no PC

RR, not sure I like the idea. Not that I hate consoles or something but because I payed for it already :D

Bad idea, its well known that Fo3 and NV are both buggy games. Those bugs transfer over to the console version as well but without the added benefit of the console/command menu on the PC version. Without that command menu many quest bugs cant be "corrected" and you could end up wasting hundreds of hours on a game you can no longer finish.

I used the console a lot in FO3 when some characters gone missing or simply stopped doing anything :)))

I did not have any problems in both Fo3 and Fallout New Vegas. There was one problem in the Operation Anchorage DLC for Ps3 where the game lagged like crazy and had insane freezing issues, but that was the only gamebreaking bug that I saw.

Are you on Windows 7? Tried compatibility mode / run as administrator / reinstall dx + drivers?

Make sure you have installed: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8109

Trust me it's something on your side, i played NV with loads of mods on Win7 x64 endlessly, had no CTD's whatsoever.

Yup. Tried that and DX 9C is already installed.

Which version? It give around 200 different Version. You definitely need the version which being with the game!

I have DX 9c June 2010 release. Every game that relates in DX9 updates DX but since this is the latest I don't think it updated much.

For "video driver crash" do you mean a blue screen of the death with a message error that includes a Nvidia or AMD related file name?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. The game crashes, Aero is gone and I get a pop up in tray, saying the Nvidia driver kernel crashed and was successfully recovered.

Sometimes, if I notice this is about to happen and I am fast enough, if I alt-tab, the driver recovers without crashing the game.

Umm try to turn on vsync actually, if it's not available in game force it in driver settings.

Is that only happening with FO games? Could you check Oblivion (earlier game/engine) - does it also happen there?

Also, all TES/FO3/NV are using CPU to the max - maybe that's what is happening? They get your CPU really hot, and PC crashes to save it from burning?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My CPU is hot in idle and in-game. It stays on 65-70 degrees no matter what I do. In this case it stays somewhere around 65.
I really doubts this is the problem. In dishonored it went up to 78 or so.

And Oblivion? Can you check that one? Then at least we'd known if that's Game-engine not liking your PC, or just wastelands.

Also, this could be something with your RAM. Had similar issues, and it turned out my RAM was an issue, try to use this.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The RAM is OK. Test it about 2-3 months ago. Besides, if it's a RAM issue, how come I can play other games with no problem? And why it crashes only when I talk to people?

I will try Obilivion but how relevant is this? I mean, isn't Oblivion a little too old?

RAM issue: had problem with RAM, and it only showed itself in few games, while not in others. Could be happening here too.

Oblivion: it is same engine from same company. If Oblivion will also crush, that will mean it's something in whole game engine that causes this whole bug.

Test your hardware, memtest+ and OCCT are free for personal use. The problem may be attributed to the VGA though. Usually when the video driver crashes this is due to: 1. driver bug, 2. hardware failure. Try also to run the game with the chassis open if this reduces the temperature, doesn't matter the temperature values that are reported.

OK. Done testing RAM + VGA. I also tried running the game with the case opened and all I got was -2 degrees on CPU and VGA.
Game still crashes.
Also, FurMark was stable for about 1 hour on 85 degrees.
I tried playing FC3 and had no issues with all on ULTRA. Game runs with about 45 FPS and ocasionally goes down to 25-30.
I'll try Oblivion to check if this is an engine related issue.

I don't think it's a hardware problem. Do the game writes a log file with info about the crash? Try to contact the developer for a bug report / support request.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Nope, no log. And I contact support and they recommend me the multi core tweak.
And this even if I told them I already did it.

As someone that has both games I can tell you that they are buggy as hell even with being fully updated and patched. I myself am at an impasse with NV after 150hrs because I cant play a session without it crashing on me many times.

The games are buggy.

If your video drives are crashing, id recommend you update video drivers, or because you reinstalled them try older drivers. Also, if you are overclocking, or not, I would try turning down your video card's settings.

Other then that, disable autosave and always make a manual save. Helps a little.

I had more problems with FO3 then I have with NV. I was unable to play that game without a BSOD and 3-5 crashes per 3 hours session. 99% of the bugs I encountered in the same places and while doing the same things in Megaton.

Also, I tried older drivers. In fact I tried about 5-6 versions without luck. I am not OC but the VGA shipped OC and I can't do anything about it.

I'll try to disable the autosave, see if this helps. Thanks.

I haven't had any problems with Fallout 3 GOTY, myself. New Vegas, however, is well known for being buggy as all hell.

Untrue. NW is very well patched, did 2 playthroughs with only one issue that was solved by relodaing an autosave.

Could you explain to me, then, why when playing the game it (very frequently) decides to just shut down without provocation? I'll literally be walking through the Mojave when suddenly, boom! Game's gone! No error message or anything. The game just closes for absolutely no reason.

The sudden drop in FPS might be a memory issue. How much space do you have free on your hard drive? When was the last time you de-fragmented your hard drive?

1 decade ago

20/150 on C and 25/100 on my games partition. Last week. I do this periodically.

Hmmmm ok, have you encountered any blue screen error messages? Has the game ever forced you to restart your PC? Perhaps your BIOS needs to be updated (this is a last resort though).

1 decade ago
Permalink

BIOS is up to date. I did encounter BSOD while playing FO3 because the video card was overheating but I removed the dust.
While playing NV, nope.

There is an exe that allows FO3 and FO:NV to use 4GB RAM. This may help. It works fine with Steam, and is often used when modding either game along with the Script Extender. The Nexus Mods website can aid you in finding that program. As I do not know the policy here on external links, I point you to Google.

As a side note, I have Windows 7 64bit and FO3/FO:NV run for me. They crash after many hours, but they do run fine until then.
