And it also does not include any DLC for the game.

Check your accounts, btw. Old owners of Sinking City got a free upgrade to Remastered.

That's a lot of Sherlock.
Also, the only game I'm interested in is missing from your chart. ;)

Do any of these require you to figure out stuff by yourself (like a real detective) or do they play more like standard point & click / adventure games?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can only speak for Crimes & Punishments and The Devil's Daughter, but they're a bit of both, you play it mostly like an adventure game with some action thrown in, finding clues as you progress, but then once you get to the end and you have all the clues you've found, you then have to piece it all together on your own like a real detective, which can be quite tricky. I got the answer wrong in Crimes & Punishments so yeah, tricky.

I like the fact that you can be wrong. Other detective games that I've played don't let you progress until you come to the right conclusions. Makes the bundle more tempting for me. Thank you for the info!

About that, there are parts in the game(s) that requires you to combine certain clues correctly to progress the story, but the final answer/solution is very much possible to get incorrect as that is the player solving it on their own with the clues they now have. Some clues are missable too so you might not have all possible information available to you making it even trickier, which is cool.

Nice, that does sound cool. Failing is fun as well sometimes :) If you remember, are the two games connected story wise? In other words, should Crime and punishment be played before Devil's daughter?

Devil's Daughter is a sequel. However it seems Testament takes place in between these two, making Crimes a prequel to Testament, although I haven't played Testament myself. So if you want it in chronological order I guess it's Crimes then Testament then Devil. But Testament is an older game with different gameplay so if you just want the more modern gameplay then it's Crimes & Punishment then Devil's Daughter. But I think they'd be perfectly fine as stand alone games too so it doesn't hurt to play them in the wrong order.

Great, thank you for taking the time to explain that all to me! Appreciate it. I'll probably start with the modern games since I imagine they're easier to get into :)

Just started and finished intro for Chapter One.
In this game you also have to come to conclusion on your own in the end. You can accuse one of the two suspects and in the end you can even choose what to do with the suspect (you can even let them go). So all in all there were 4 choices after first case. I am not sure though what happens if you choose wrongly. For me the suspect actually confessed.

I read that people dislike the fact there is no real conclusion - even if you take the wrong conclusion nothing indicates it.But IMO that is what it really makes it feel like an actual detective work. You wouldnt get any confirmation of being right or wrong in real life ...

But you have to do some simple analytics throughout the cases. You have to select a clue and then approach people. If you dont select the correct clue, then people do not respond to you. So you have to think along on what you want to ask about and you cant just run through the level and see if anyone has dialogues available for anything. Putting clues together and asking about evidence is very simple - right choice gives you result, wrong choice does nothing. So it doesnt seem it punishes you for being wrong.

There was one interesting feature I am not sure I liked or disliked yet. You can spy on convirsations, but you have to choose on your own what is filler information and what you need to hear. So you have to think about the suspect/victim and tie it together with conversation. But when you do the evesdropping, you dont hear the full convo - you just see phrases on the screen and choose to dismiss or accept the clue.. But the clues are sometimes very random... I got it right on the first approach, so again not sure what happenes if you get it wrong. Maybe you can try again.

The game is a bit clunky, but from detective work perspective it feels interesting.

Thanks for explaining some of the game mechanics! I like the idea that there is no true conclusion to the game. Not sure how replayable the game is, but at least you're not forced into the "correct" decision on the first playthrough.

Sounds like it requires some actual thinking which is a nice change from most modern games.

And I expect some clunkiness since it is Frogwares. That doesn't put me off too much :)

Thanks again!

crimes and punishment the hardest part about that game was finding the puzzles.
used guides to point me where i needed to go so i could actually play/find the god damn puzzles!!!!!
recall wondering around the map for ages having talked to everyone multiple times
i had missed some toothpick sized clue that only shows up when your standing on top of it

On one hand I appreciate that they didn't include big flashing markers to point you to the clues - like you'd see in a Ubisoft game - but that does sound a little extreme.

Chapter One DLC's are not included, right? anyone knows how interesting they are?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most of them are filler, really. Very short and add nothing of interest in terms of cases. Perhaps the only one that stands out is the DLC "Beyond a Joke", with only one side quest that is not too long but I personally found interesting to play story-wise, with a nod to a character that shows up at a later time in life for Sherlock Holmes (at least in the Frogwares-verse, hinting at a possible future remake of said game).

Some of the investigation logic in these games is lacking IMO. And then Frogwares tried to craft a new combat system for Chapter One, which...well...dare I say it is the worst of all time?

Anyway, I know a lot of people love these, but they ain't for me. Although somehow I own most everything here already.

If you don't have this SH collection, it is a damn good deal.
Tier 1 is very good for the uncollected.

I'm not going to get it, but if I did I'd got for T3 and end up with 7 of the unowned games for $12, which isn't bad at all.

LoL. My dumb ass assumed that "Chapter Ones" means it is going to be episode based. As in - chapter one, chapter two, chapter three, like it used to be with Hitman and there wouldnt be the whole story available until all comes out. So I kinda didnt pay attention to the game thinking I Will get it when it comes out fully and goes on sale for normal price.

And here I sit, feeling like an idiot not understanding Chapter One means its the beginning of Holmes :D

anyway - I see thaty it does not run in widescreen natively. Anyone has fixed it? On reddit and forums there seem to be several ways to fix this, downloading trainers and whatnot. Maybe someone has found or tried any of the fixes and can vouich for them?
