Interresting developement ^^ Steam OS, AMD Mantle and Microsofts current tendency to drive everything they have over a cliff and kick its customers with dirty boots.. all that combined might really be the end of Windows in the foreseeable future..

Mantle is an API, not an OS.

"Through these efforts, we hope to contribute tools for developers building new experiences on Linux, compel hardware manufacturers to prioritize support for Linux, and ultimately deliver an elegant and open platform for Linux users"

Great news :D

All people who care Linux
Games = DirectX, and DirectX = Windows.

Nope, Dx at this point will die with microsoft not willing to develop dx12 and devs wine-ing about too much steps to access hardware[or something like that, mentioned in interview about bad AA performance in dx] and there are already games on OpenGL which support linux. Slso, some games run better on linux than windows

Google for "AMD Mantle". DirectX will probably be over soon.

thats AMD only and only for GCN architecture, dont solve all problems if Nvidia dont get their hands on it somehow

I don't think so. PhysX for example can be used on both nvidia and ati. It's a bad move to make such a feature compatible only with your your videocards.

wikipedia
"Currently the only implementation is for graphics processing units with AMD's Graphics Core Next architecture,[3] although there is speculation other GPU vendors such as NVidia and Intel might be able to implement it in future.[2] Mantle was created to allow games and applications that utilize the GPU more efficiently, and have much faster draw calls, and an unintended benefit of cross platform coding to be more easily ported."

the thing with physx is that if you run it on ati/amd card, it will use cpu but nvidia have hardware acceleration on their card for physx
yes, they might adapt gcn architecture as well but they didnt do it yet and we dont if they will. we can only hope at this point

PhysX worked on non-Nvidia systems looong before it was bought out by Nvidia. If they changed it to make it Nvidia-only then people would have stopped using it. Then again, that kinda proves your point too.

Hard to say how it will all turn out, but if Steam OS is a success, developers and publishers will be eager to support Mantle and at some point it might be "adapt or die" for Nvidia.. but I really hope we don´t end up with with an AMD-Monopole. In the near future we will probably see a lot of games that support both (Mantle and Direct X) like Battlefield 4.. I guess the major graphicsengines will support it and when we reach a point where you can play most games on Windows&SteamOS with AMD-Hardware but only on Windows when you have a Nvidia-Card, AMD might take the cake.

Its a very interresting developement, but there are a few different strings that have to be pulled in the right direction to make it all work and really change things.. but the potential is there at least ^^

i dont see a reason why not, mantle-dx coexisting might be a thing. We already have games that support dx and opengl for a long time

And? Games for Windows = 8000-10000. Games for Linux = 500-1000.
I have almost 800 games. All works on Windows (XP/7 or virtual machine with 98/Me or DosBox).
Tell me how to use all this games without problems on Linux? I don't see any reason to changing operating system to Linux.

you can't realy compare a game emulated through wine with a game played on windows.

As a really big fan of Linux I can say this is very true...sadly.

Maybe sometime in the future there will be a better way, maybe Valve will come up with it, who knows.

Yeah lets all stay with lesser tech because you have more games currently that run on Windows.

Or I don't know, lets say in the future have games release on Linux and run better then the Windows counterparts? Sounds like a plan to me....

it's not about now, it's about the future. in other words, better graphics with cheaper video cards. unless you mean to tell me that most people wouldn't care about performance increase?

Since Microsoft prefers to prevent innovation and freeze competitors out of business, it's nice to see some powerful companies pushing for alternatives.

Also DirectX blows ass.

Love the hate for DirectX, it so clearly deserves a special place in hell for its contribution to the demise of Glide.

At least OpenGL survived.

Shame though, I believe Glide was faster and more efficient also when compared to DX.
