So, a few weeks back i bought this game on retail, and the seller told me that it can be activated on Steam. We even opened the case to check whether the key was there or not and it was all ok. I installed it and played the game for a couple of hours and about a week ago I decided to activate it on Steam. The problem is that it doesn't work.

After checking the forums I discovered that this version of the game ( GOTY ) can be activated on Steam only if it has the following key structure: "AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC". My key has this structure: "AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE" and it obviously won't work.

Did anyone else had the same problem ? Is there something I can do ?

If you could help me and have the time to do so, please do.

Many thanks, and sorry for the long description !

I bought the same shit, if it's a "just for gamers" edition or something like that, it's not activated on steam.

That weird edition should advertise containing a map or something on the box, you might be able to use that as an excuse to get a refund or exchange as it is false advertisement (and the seller told you it was activated on steam).

edit : if it had been a Steam game it would have required that you activate it proir to playing.

I would ask for a refund but I lost the coupon or the receipt. ( whatever that thing is called in english )

Ah... :-/

Then you're stuck with it. Maybe you could complain to the seller about pretending it was steam while it was not, also selling retail copies that falsely advertise to contain stuff while they don't (if, like the one I had bought, you box says it contains a Pandore map and does not). Maybe he'll consider a refund in that case ?

When it happened to me I had the receipt, also I had the seller open a random copy from the store so that he could check that the map wasn't indeed in it.

But working in retail is a tough job and I hate being "that" customer, also the game is good - despite not being on steam - , so I suggest you just enjoy it since you're stuck with it... And be more careful in the future.

Not really, there are fully steamworks games that only work with steam while there are games that can be activated on Steam without needing it to run.

Does it matter if it's on Steam or not?

Some people do prefer it. Granted, this copy uses an alternate service for online so Steam integration isn't required at this time, but that service may not last forever. While its possible Steam copies get updated to use Steam code for online, non Steam copies aren't likely.

I'm just a gamer. PC, console, handheld, even my cellphone for the occasional title. I don't limit myself.

Heck, I don't even need it to be electronic. I own Fighting Fantasy books from the 80s. :D

I'm limiting myself, because I don't have so much time for all awesome games in the world :-)

Have you seen Deathtrap Dungeon in Steam? Might want to jump on that if you have the cash.

I have the PSP Mini version of the book for playing on the go, though I need a new PSP.

Fighting Fantasy books? Are they those dungeon crawler books based on rolling some dice?

I played a couple of those and loved them.

That is correct. I've owned more than 40 over the years.

There's nothing you can do - as you've said yourself, there are certain keys that can be redeemed on Steam and there are certain keys, that will simply activate the game but can't be used on Steam.

Your version should have said "requires Steam" somewhere, then you'd have been on the safe side.

Well, I guess that the only good thing about all this is the fact that I can sell the game after I get bored.

Make sure it doesn't have a limited number of activations before selling it, and be sure to warn the person you're selling it to if it does.

After a bit of digging around, I discovered that the key offers me 4 DLC's. I haven't used the key and I don't think I will. I'll leave it to someone else to enjoy it. Thank you for the advice.

If a game is activateable on steam it should have a steam logo on the back.

Only EA games (to my knowledge) can be activated on steam/origin but also played without (at least the old ones)

Retail copies of Dark Souls can be played without Steam, and also activated on Steam if you want (but both version require that other DRM that everyone loves.... GfWL)

GfWL is not available in my country and I cannot play Dark Souls. That makes me sad ! :(

It makes me sad too :(
Hopefully they will patch it completely to Steamworks when GfWL dies, then it'll be available to more. Although by then DS2 will be out.
