http://www.howtogeek.com/123780/htg-explains-is-readyboost-worth-using/ i only have 2 gb RAM on laptop so should i temporarily use like a few weeks/months a 16 gb flash drive to increase memory?

Sure, but make sure your current OS can handle that much RAM. Theres no point in getting more than 4 if you're not 64 bit.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_7

Theres a nifty chart for ya.

Ah it's windows 7 on 32 at the moment xD so it's only good to use it on Windows 7 64 bit?

So if Windows 7 has 4 gb limit i should set the flash drive to only help me add 2 more GB instead of the full 15-16?:) or what?:D

He's takling about ReadyBoost, not RAM, stop misleading people.

ReadyBoost is a kind of page file, it doesn't add up to the 4GB limit for 32bit.

USB Flash Drive ain't gonna offer you anything fast in terms of memory extension... it all depends on what you do with the computer to determine if you're gonna benefit from that.

If you have only 2GB of RAM, then ReadyBoost will probably help you.

You're not increasing your memory though, just access to the hard drive CACHE. Meaning your programs will still swap out memory blocks, but those will be mirrored to the flash drive. It's NOT as fast as having more RAM.

Also remember that flash memory is not nearly as fast as solid-state drives. People get confused on this, because the two technologies are similar, but there's an order of magnitude difference in speed.

tl;dr: It will be slightly beneficial.

In his case it should benefit quite a bit but yeah what you said is true.

So guys if i have windows 7 32 bit that means i should put it to 4 only or what?
Also do i have to restart the laptop in order for the changes to take effect or what?:)

READYBOOST IS NOT MEMORY. 32-bit doesn't enter in to it. 4gigs of RAM is the limitation for 32-bit operating systems, but READYBOOST IS NOT RAM. They are not the same thing. Please ignore the guy that doesn't know what he's talking about.

Use any size you want. It's likely that more than 4GB of Readyboost space won't be used much (since you only have 2GB of RAM), but it harms nothing.

And as for the guy who said that flash memory wears out. This is technically correct (the best kind of correct), but modern flash memory lasts orders of magnitude longer than before. It's a warning that is no longer needed.

Put in your flash. Turn on Readyboost. Restart your computer.

In my experience ReadyBoost is helpful even with 4GB (well, 3.5GB on 32 bit). It's not a full replacement for more RAM though. It will make the PC get stuck a little less, but you'll still feel it when you go over the RAM limit. By the way, the recommended size is your RAM size, far as I remember, so those 16GB won't all be useful if you just have 2GB of RAM.

You should be able to use the full 16GB. ReadyBoost is just a disk cache, it's not treated as a RAM upgrade so it's not affected by the system limit on that.

That said, you might not get any significant benefit from using the extra space.

Oh. I tried that for a bit and it helped just a little, but not significantly.

If you can use a flash memory card instead of a USB I would do that. I currently have an 8 gig flash card in my laptop and it seems to help a little.

And the flash memory card is a personal preference, I don't want a USB sticking out on the side of my laptop.

I don't use one for my gaming PC, I have 12 gigs on that, the laptop has 4 gigs which is why I use it.

2GB should be enough. I assume though that if your laptop has a card slot it's for SD, not MicroSD.

readyboost is just some hogwash, probably invented while gates was drunk.

How do i do that?& it takes more space on my windows partition or what?

"Start" --> rightclick on "Computer" ---> on the left side of the window, click on "Advanced Systemsettings" --> "Advanced" tab ---> under "Performance" on "Settings" ---> "Adavanced" and there should be "Virtual Memory" somewhere, click on "Change", you'll figure out the rest. (using a german windows 7, the translation of the menus might be inaccurate)

it takes space from whatever partition you choose.

Readyboost IS the pagefile, essentially. Except saved on something FASTER than the hard drive. That's where the boost comes in.

Faster only at random read/write, at sequencial read/write HDDs are way faster.

Completely correct, which is why flash is better for Readyboost. It's exactly what it's good at.

I think a 4GB RAM stick must be very cheap right now, it's easy to install on most laptops and will give a MUCH better result, if you check it's bottom you will probably see a small entrance for the RAM that can be opened with a screwdriver, just make sure to get the right one for your model.

Also, Readyboost might corrupt your pendrive on long term use, since flash memory wears down.

RAM is alot better... but unless you don't have DDR3 support I suggest not buying RAM since DDR1/2 are more costly than DDR3 and just doesn't worth it.

Yes, but I can't tell you how long it will take to damage it, since I don't now how aggressive Readyboost is on data writing. I already managed to damage a Kingston flash drive by rewriting too much, took me 3 years though...

3 years of normal usage of copy-pasta-in files xD or using it as Readyboost?

Normal usage, it was an old model though. Modern ones are much tougher, but as I stated if Readyboost is too aggressive your flash drive might got kaput by the end of the month even if it's a modern one.

From my experience it doesn't noticeably increase performance. It's better to dual - boot linux on lower end laptops IMHO.
Also, learn how to post links...
