I have a 3tb Seagate expansion external hard drive that use to store all my youtube video game recordings on and I am very satisfied with it.

This is the same one that I currently use, I have it plugged in at all times, and never hear a noise out of it. For the price, it seemed real fair to me (at the time, I believe it was 149 that I paid a few years back), it has served me quite well. For the price and usage I have gotten out of it, I would recommend it.

I think it's just a name, meant to expand the data storage you have beyond the internal memory. And secretcliff linked to the one I have, except I bought it on amazon. It was 109 dollars, but I had amazon gift cards that I used so I only actually paid like 70 dollars for it. The thing about this 3TB one is it's a desktop model, as in it has to be plugged into an external power source to work. I have a 500gb external hard drive that is plug and use, so you will probably want to make sure what you want see if it's portable or desktop. There is a 63 dollar 1TB portable Matsunichi external hard drive I see on Amazon. No matter what you choose there is always the element of "Am I going to be one of those people who get one that dies quickly?" because it seems everything has one person in the reviews who say they got a lemon.

Mine doesn't support USB 3.0 either, which is something that would be really nice in a new computer, but it's a huge issue. I might feel differently if I ever was able to use it with a 3.0 port.

Dunno what kind of drive you're looking for, but Newegg.com will give you an idea on the pricing. I usually end up buying from them.

I would recommend anything by WD, I have purchased 4-5 hard drives and always get the most reliability from those drives. Seagate drives have the worst reliability factor, but they are generally cheaper, I would avoid those at all costs really,(Sometimes lasting only several months).

i recently bought new harddrive and im not a massive techie, yet i managed to intsall it by myself. and i learned a couple of things. i even had to buy new cables.
Also people here are posting only expensive brands. My Seagate lasted more than 10 years and its still rolling :D

I've had my 750 GB external WD drive for as long as I've had my laptop (will be 3 years in a month) and it's always been well to me. It loves all of my HD anime collections and it takes good care of them. Just for how long this one has lasted me I will probably always buy WD. I don't know how much a 2 TB WD drive is but I happily give my recommendation that a few extra bucks for a WD will most likely be a great investment.

Atm, WD seems to be the best option for hard drives.

I only had 1 hdd that died on me, a 40gb ibm like 15 years ago. Oh, and a maxtor, many years ago too.
But i gave services to many computers who had a dead hdd. Mostly seagate.
I currently have 3 WD from different ages (200 gb, 500 gb, 1 tb) I had no problems with them.

I got a 3tb external seagate drive for I think $110 - $120... But this was at the bX, so you probably don't have access. :(
For those wondering, the bx is the base exchange, a big store on air force bases (no tax = happy me). There's also the px, post exchange, for army posts, etc. However, i think they renamed all of them to just "the exchange". Nobody calls them that though.

For whoever this may benefit. Here's my experience with external Hard Drives.
Stay away from SeaGate, stick with Western Digital if possible.
Stay away from 3+TB drives, you'll want 1TB to 2TB externals, the reason you don't want 3TB drives is because their fail rate is too high for the price of them. Sometimes you can get one that'll only last a few months from SeaGate and only a year with Western Digital.
My typical drive life is 5 to 15+ years. I still have HDD's that are a total of 30GB.
Hope that helps.
