Are you sure the drive isnt just going into sleep mode when there is no activity?

I think it's a specification that the power saving feature of the external drive may cause it to stop for a few seconds.
If the device is overturned while reading or writing data, it may be damaged.
However, if it was not detected by the error check, then it should be fine.

Thank you, no i always use them standing up, i cant remember if it was on at the time or not, but i am almost sure it wasn't copying at the time (else i would have freaked out even more) but i picked it right up again.
Yesterday it found the drive and then it removed itself in windows, when i replugged it i didn't have any problems and copied a bunch of tb.
And left it plugged in my pc, now the next morning they were working on the go and copying more files.
How do you mean setting though, in windows?

One of my (brand new) external drives fell on its side while standing up, i did a quick wd smart test and came out okay and i am copying 3 tb now which so far also seems okay, but on a rare occasion it might turn off (for a few seconds), would that be a matter of it's connection inside having "shot loose" and a disk bay (i don't have one to test yet) would fix that or could it still be a bad drive?
