(please share your thoughts keeping a relaxed and pressure-free atmosphere, thank you!)

The new "Promotions" category link will be placed as last link. so, just under "Uncategorized" and will host ads (SG ads, obviously)

we could use it for threads promoting all sort of things (like we do in giveaway's "Description", already)

good point suggested by TexWilleri:

it wouldn't be included in the all category, so you would have to click the actual category to see them

(forgot to say it, but that was the sense of having Promotions at the list bottom and separated from all other Categories)

so, might be something like:

Category
All
Announcements
Bugs / Suggestions
Deals
General
Group Recruitment
Let's Play Together
Off-Topic
Puzzles
Uncategorized
Promotions

if you click on "All", promotions threads won't show up. Only clicking on "Promotions" will show its threads.

imo, this would be also handy for Mods and Support, so to have a place in which they'd quickly move a wrongly categorized thread.

So basically, a category just for encouraging spam? Honestly, I'd rather not. It'll still show up in the main section with the rest.

some people do giveaways out of the kindness of there hearts. some do them to bribe others to join there steam groups, twitch, faceplant, ect... and now some people want to do giveaways to collect ad revenue.

I think I see where it's coming from but it wouldn't change anything, I assure you. It's like hanging those boxes saying "put flyers here" and then spammers still put flyers in the mailbox because nobody but the cleaning person takes the flyers from the "flyer box". We have ads and we have "group recruitment", and we have all kinds of promotion in the GAs, I think it's quite enough.

that's what happens in one of the places I work! I'm at the ground floor of an apartment building, we have (for apartments and shops) single, clearly-written labels on every mailbox and next to them there's a huge mailbox with "put flyers here" written with a huge font; still, everyone who passes by the ground floor of the condo, puts flyers on every single mailbox and floods the flyer box too xD
fortunately I'm not the one who has to clean everything up, but it's crazy to see dozens of spam flyers hanging from all the small mailboxes and another pack of them in the flyer box xD

Back in the place I lived, uhm.. two residences ago? after they got through squeezing flyers into every gap they could find, they would just scatter them all over the ground in the area around the mailboxes [which were in a small entry room just inside the complex, that you passed through to get to the main hallways]. It got to the point where residents just dumped the flyers from their mailbox to join those on the ground because, well, that's clearly where they were established as belonging. :P

I think if you implemented it where you had to click on the section to view the discussions that it would be ignored - because of this I could see people just posting their promotions/ads in the other parts of discussions to get the traffic and causing bother for support/mods.

For that reason not implementing it in the first place sounds better to me, although I really wouldn't mind it being there.

Personally, its just encouraging more spamming even if it is in a specific section. Most people I suspect use all to see what the latest threads are so people will still see it. Keeping threads to a minimum makes seeing the latest thread more bearable so I would prefer to leave it as it is.

Hey icaio. I would possibly be ok with the changes you've made but I'll bet most people wont either put it into the right box/category or if they are advertising a giveaway, they will want to put it into the all category to maximise the number of eyes that see it. The other issue I see with this is people will think spamming and advertising is ok on the forums as there is a subsection for it and it may encourage people to do more of it. I am probably being a bit cynical and thinking of things that may go wrong with this! I can see Tzaar's response below is more succinct than mine :O

ah ha! love how you've destroyed the olla thing with a few (perfectly picked) words.

and was kind of waiting for you. cause you're, maybe, the exact opposite of what i'm trying to suggest here.

pretty sure you've understood what i'm -cautiously- saying.

meaning: if you want to know how to do the things, here around, take a quick -or deep- look at what (and how) robilar5500 did
(...or something like that)

sorry if i'm shamelessly using you as an example :D

I’m not sure I understand the point. Is this for SG events like the holiday thing, or “I have a YouTube channel and I want to promote it,” or something else? The first I think is covered by announcements, the second I don’t think we need a separate place for. People can create an off topic thread or put their info in the giveaway description. If I recall correctly the only rule is that you can’t require a like or a visit but you’re able to otherwise promote within reason. I don’t necessarily oppose the idea but I’m not sure what it would add.

kind of:

"i have a nice advent calendar" (like last one by "Machines") : good --> General
"i have a very nice YouTube channel" : good --> Promotions

i would put there pretty much everything that is not closely related to a SteamGifts Giveaway, but i'm always been the worst categorizer ever existed. always!

Gotcha. I think it could work. Would you suggest then removing the ability to promote elsewhere? I suspect it could put extra work on the mod team, but I’m sure rules could be put in place to help that.

And hey, you categorized this one right, so you’ve got that going :P

removing the ability to promote elsewhere?

not at all, Description is a very good "tool" if you need to promote something. plus, meanwhile, you're staying here, at SG, maybe you generate some content, maybe not, but your still participating, spending points etc.

kinda... fair, imo.

So If I would like to see all threads I will have to open two tabs - one with "all" and second with "promotions".
That's plain stupid.

At least add category "actual all".

You could easily do a toggle in your account settings, something like “Hide Promotions from All” with a yes/ no. I think you raise a good point, but it sounds addressable

When making a proposal, you should start by detailing the presumed benefits, then continue on by detailing potential downsides and how to resolve them. I'm not getting anything of substance from the current topic (notably, I can't discern any benefit at all), which means there's no reason for me to be anything other than opposed to it.
All the more so since it seems to have some rather intuitive downsides [encouraging problematic behavior, even within a specialized area, tends to degrade overall site quality; For example, right now ad-bots can be suspended outright, but if there's a zone for them, that could lead to consistant server demands], on top of the basic issue of encouraging things that core site rules actively prohibit (ie, advertising and bot use).

I don't understand. Is this a section where I would go when I want to find out which publishers have their games marked down by 30% and who is selling t-shirts with unauthorised fan art?
