Meanwhile, I recently upgraded from a flip phone to the cheapest modern smartphone I could find.

Honestly, the size is near perfect for me, since I find smaller phones a bit hard to use. But the other features are a bit too extravagant.

I wonder in what years Asus is going to bring wireless charging to their phones, still waiting... Their phones are among the heaviest and still behind every other brands for this, no excuses.
Ironically they are selling a QI stand with their ROG gaming brand. 🤷♂️

Makes totally more sense, can even buy a ps5 and a switch. Another article also talks about improved competitive gaming/esports, is that even possible on mobile controls? (I don't game on my phone).
Maybe nice if you are in a train or car and want to play a game, but some really still prefer this over a norma pc, with a lot bigger screen, and controller/mouse/keyboard support.

https://www.ign.com/articles/best-phone-controller <- they have these now.... Can go all "pro" in mobile fortnite :D

I am not expert at all then playing TF2 with keyboard and mouse, but isn't that best and fastest way to get accurracy then a controller?
I'd still prefer a tablet with joysticks, bigger screen and all. ;) Had an archos tablet, they were making a better one, but seems discontinued and one of the few that made such things.

I'm horrible with controllers myself.. Those who play often probably can get good accuracy with controller as well, but as little as I have played with them at most I can play some racing gome or GTA :D Got a cheap logitech controller recently to play games where you can ride motorcycle, but that's most I've used it..
I use tablet only for reading / watching stuff and only games I play on my phone is candy crush and other similar simple games... Considering you can get good performance laptop for the price of powerful phone, I really see absolutely no reason to get expensive phone for gaming.. Not even talking about powerful tablets.. I do have some kind of cheap Huawei I got in a promotion, but I tried Among Us with friends, it even struggled to run that.. So then you probably need some 1k+ tablet as well and I just don't see the point in that.

Yeah I had used that archos mainly for emulators, which did it job great though, was basically a nice portable retro device rather then using it as a full tablet, fell 25cm from my nightstand on soft carpet and it became so slow i haven't touched a tablet since 3 years, suprised it couldn't even take such a soft and small fall.

Basically a gimmick.
Just like 4K screens on phones..... complete waste of resources on 5 - 6 inch screen :D
I was kinda of interested in Asus ZenPhone (because I bought Zenbook laptop and kind of wanted that "apple feel" of having the same brand and model devices, but seeing the price made me realize I don't want "apple feel" that much :D
I suppose I'll just go on with my Samsung S8.. Had it fixed and it's like new. Will probably wait for some kind of "get the previous model for half a price" deal when another flagship comes out :D

I know of Sony phones
Theres Xperia 1, Xperia XZ and I think there was one older Z model that had 4K screen as well.
It's definitely not a popular trend, but the ones that have it are total gimmick IMO

MKBHD did a good review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pf2KJD5qf0
Don't get the hate, the hardware is fantastic. I can't afford it but that doesn't mean I don't think it's cool.

Already read about it some time ago when it was first announced, and, well, that's cool and all, but... why?
Gaming on the go sounds fine, sure, but why not just buy a Switch, or even one of those x86 portable PCs that are all the rage on crowdfunding platforms lately?
Heck, at those prices you could fit much more in the budget, like a second Switch, a PS/XBOX, dozens of games, multiple controllers, gaming monitors...
This is no more than an exercise in futility. A waste of wafers in the midst of industry-wide shortages and price spikes.
Well, all high-end smartphones are, but that's just my subjective opinion.
But the most important question of them all is... can it run Crysis?

As much as I like how complex phones have become there's one feature that I miss from the old phones, FM radio that doesn't require connection to the internet. Whenever my power is out or I'm somewhere without internet, I can't use my phone for anything else than reading an ebook (games dry the battery out). Whenever I buy a new high end phone I always buy a cheap old phone too for the fm radio alone.

Yeah, at least mine does, my phone is like 2 years old I think and it still needs to use earphones for antenna

It has never left as far as i know. It's just that some brands and/or models don't include it for some reasons. There's still many phones (including flagship) without this feature. Sometimes it's even market dependent and you can't have it in some regions.
I like this feature aswell, it can really be useful when you're travelling or in some others situations.

I know it never left entirely but from what I've seen on the list Golwar linked me from GSMarena, it's actually true that less and less phones stopped including it each year. Here's the results I got by filtering by each year:
2014 - 715
2015 - 664
2016 - 448
2017 - 360
2018 - 333
2019 - 314
2020 - 342
It looks like the number has been going down until 2020 when it climbed up again. For example Note 3 through 9 didn't have it, Note 10 added it back in. Galaxy S4 through S8 didn't have it, S9 added it back in.

Sadly we have to wait at least 5 more years to See this phones full potential because
Blade of God 2 will be first mobile game that will require 6 gigs of ram to run on minimal settings
(beta will start tommorow in taptap) and thats soo far from what this Phone can offer (i know cpu matter too but snap 855 is on average $400 phones nowadays)

I got the Asus Zenfone recently which is mostly comparable to the ROG (of the same price point). Although I think you get good specs for your money compared to some other major phone brands, I don't think I like the UI enough to warrant doing it again,

2448 x 1080 OLED display though. Eeeeeeeeeeh. The return of headphone jack is nice.

Tbh I'd rather get another PC or buy a console instead of a phone like this

"It’ll cost about $1,580 when it launches in May, but less expensive models will come first
Asus is going big with its latest gaming phones. The ROG Phone 5 lineup will start shipping this month across the globe, costing 799 euros (around $950) for the base configuration with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage. Every configuration has a 6.78-inch FHD+ OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 300Hz touch sampling rate. Also, the headphone jack has made a comeback after being absent from the ROG Phone 3, this time with a quad DAC in tow for hi-res audio. (In case you’re wondering where the ROG Phone 4 went, Asus skipped over the number four, like OnePlus did, due to its similarities with the word “death” in some Asian languages.)
The most notable changes from the last generation are exclusive to some even more expensive configurations, the ROG Phone 5 Pro and Ultimate (which I published a review of) that release in April for 1,199 euros (approximately $1,420) and in May for 1,299 euros (about $1,583), respectively. Both of these models have double the storage and more RAM (starting at 16GB in the Pro and going all the way up to 18GB in the Ultimate); come in limited edition colors; and have two additional ultrasonic touch sensors than the standard model, located near where your ring fingers might rest while holding the phone in landscape mode. You’ll also get a case and a clip-on AeroActive Cooler 5 fan attachment with purchase with either the Pro or Ultimate phone (which adds two more buttons attached to the fan.)"
