DLC is short for "Downloadable Content" - a complete game is also content.
Most of the time, DLC is used when someone talks about an addon, but the inaccurate usage of a term does not change its meaning.

The 1st DLC was introduced by Atari, the Atari 2600 Gameline service.
First DLC on PC was for Total Annihilation, it was free.

Well.. some years ago you just called it Addon and had to buy it in a physical shop. Now its called DLC, its the same - with the exeption that it now can be lucrative for the developers to also sell "smaller addons", because theres no need for a physical transportation.

It is also lucrative to sell utter bullshit like "bacon weapon skins".
Just a matter of good marketing and the right audience.

I remember when we used to make such goofy skins and put them into games like Counter-Strike or other FPS, but asking people to pay for this? Game companies must be really desperate.
Even more ridiculous is the fact, that hobby modders often deliver better content, than the game makers.

Hmmm, take Oblivion for example: Horse Armor was DLC but Shivering Isles was definetly an ADD-ON. What I'm trying to say is that until a few years ago you could REALLY see the difference between DLC and ADD-ON. Now we just have 20 dlcs per game...

Console gaming.

The net result to publishers from piracy and used game sales or trading is the same = $0 after that first disc gets out, and then is just passed around.
Bring in the latest gen of consoles with dedicated online services. Now people can give/trade that 2nd hand game to others, but they won't actually get all of the game, or perhaps even the online portion, unless they buy the rest directly from the publishers over the gaming service (xbl/psn) by credit card.

EA. Before EA's dlc's, all the downloadable contents were almost a whole new game.

It seems as a entirely new game for me. First SC had all 3 campagins( one for each race) and EXPANSION gave 3 more campagins with more units and buildings.

Most recent one I can think of is Civilization V: Brave New World. Nine new civs, eight new wonders, and a pretty heavy revision of how culture and diplomacy work.

Most MMOs are still expansion based. STO put one out this year, EQ as well, EQ2 has one due out soon.

From what I remember ... the EA Downloader made it popular .. Dont know if EA started it.

EA Downloader Tested the Waters with "BF2 Special Forces" .. It was a success and along game DOWNLOAD ONLY, Euro Forces and then Armored Fury. Both of these combined would of been equal to a 3rd Expansion for BF2 but instead they were split up as micro transactions.

I remember saying back then that this was bad .. but hesitantly purchased them as I love the BF series..

From my little research I've done, while there were DLCs before (like free stuff for Total Annihilation, or first-payable DLC I know about - multiplayer maps for MechAssault in 2002), the beginning of DLC-as-we-know-it (aka stupid, expensive and usually pointless stuff) is Oblivion's Horse Armor.

Sometimes people also mention BF2 stuff, but somehow it isn't as hated as Horse Armor.

EA did, with Sims packs and BF2 Euro Forces&Armored Fury. And, ofc, Horse Armor.
