Today, I felt greedy and brought my laptop to work. I left it in the car to use during lunch.
Long story short; it wasn't working. Came home, plugged it in, still won't work. It was pronounced dead 1 hour later on the spot (to make sure).

Now I am laptopless.. But I have a few option, and I wanna hear your opinion.

  1. Fix it (cost $100 or more)
  2. Buy a new one on bestbuy (don't they have the pay monthly service?) ($600 or more)
  3. Accept brothers offer; buy his new laptop for $400. But! There is a wait time of 1 month)

I had a crappy laptop I've had for 6-7 years.

I am hoping bestbuy allows a monthly pay instead of one time.
I don't know I can wait a month without a laptop.

I would do a giveaway, but I can't do that on mobile.

+1 Do not resurrect the old one. It's definitely time for a new laptop.
Do you have other options besides Best Buy?

Well get a desktop now and become a true PC gamer ;) you can get small form PC's the size of consoles now if size is your thing and you can even get them with laptop docks ....yeah they cost a fair bit lol.

My advice s always is never get a laptop for gaming they cost way to much and have little bang for the bucks you spend, for around the price of a PS4 or Xbone you can build a PC that is way better then any console and if you spend a little extra you will get 5 good years of high/ultra gaming.

I would say i'm sorry for your loose but it's a laptop man, as long as the important stuff was backed up on an external drive you should be all good.

You need to option 4 it and get a desktop IMHO but if you really must have a laptop for what ever reason don't pay to much for it they tend to die often and cost a lot to fix you got lucky and got 6-7 year out of one. The 2 that owned died like a month out of warranty lol

6-7 years is a good run. Is there a reason why a desktop isn't being considered? You can also stretch your dollar further by getting a APU for a desktop instead of a CPU and GPU. More options and more bang for buck with desktops imo.

Don't repair it, it's not worth it. :)
Either option 2 (if you have the monies to spend) or 3 (depending on the lappy's specs, if it's so-so, go for option 2!)

Desktop is more expensive. I have to buy the monitor, keyboard, etc.

Desktops also last way longer, don't overheat anywhere near as badly as laptops do, can be upgraded later, cost way less than a "gaming" equivalent laptop, and most of the peripherals are cheap. An out-of-the-box desktop at Wal-Mart or something similar would most likely be a huge improvement over a 6-7 year old laptop, and they cost around the same as what your brother is offering.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. Do yourself the biggest favor of your life and get a gaming desktop.

Actually. You can find a desktop with the same specs as the laptop you are going to be buying at a significant lower price. Also, With extra cash to spend on keyboards and monitors so it'd be better for a desktop in my opinion,...

It's really sad when you lose a laptop =0

To cheer you up I will tell you this story that actually happened at school today:

A guy in my class hit his laptop for some reason and it diededed instantly. It went completely black and the only thing left running were the fans. He couldn't get it to work again and kinda freaked out. Then the idea hit him and he hit the laptop again (but from the other side this time) and it went back on! =D

Also, I wouldn't recommend that you repair it.

Rest in pieces laptop. I'm not sure what to recommend given that I don't know all the details. I would personally give it another attempt to see if the solution is something simple that I can do at home, and then, if it truly is beyond my capacity to fix, perhaps get an estimate on getting it fixed somewhere. Failing that, I would probably just head to get a new laptop, but I wouldn't get one at Best Buy (because, well, they're not the best buy). I would go somewhere like Newegg or Amazon and find a laptop I really wanted and order it; I think at least one of them has a monthly payment and if you can't you might be able to do it with Paypal credit or something like that.

I would at least try to repair it. So you have taken the battery out, disconnected it from the power adapter, held down the power button for 30 seconds and then placed the battery back in and the power adapter and tried powering it on? Sometimes, it may be something minimal like that or the power switch inverter needs to be replaced.

I'm always for fixing things, even if they're ancient.
And if they won't work as they are supposed to, turn them into something else.
Here are a few ideas for you:

My condolences.
I still have a 7 years old 12.1" laptop, and it's working just fine.
The battery died, but now I use it with a real-time Linux kernel and an AKAI LPK-25 as a tiny synth piano. It's great!

I understand your pain, about a month ago my gaming laptop died... I bought it in 2009... I'm just as surprised it lasted as long as it did (Asus RofG laptop)

Anyways... Now I'm using something that won't play higher end games...

Ask your brother if you can borrow his old laptop while you figure out what you want to do...?

First of all, salvage everything you can - don't let his death go for a waste. Then, from whatever remains, throw into the ground and burn it - that way his soul won't haunt you (Supenatural way).

As on serious note - if you have money go with something new, shiny and chrome. That way you will be able to buy machine that will fits your needs, it will have warranty, and will be brand new.

EDIT: Also - you should have make a poll :P
