NC Day 4
Started the day off at Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve to look for frogs. While we didn't see any up close (they always jumped in the water before we could get anywhere near), we could hear a bunch everywhere. All the water was covered with a film of green weeds. We did see a cormorant facing off with a turtle

Lunch was at O’neal’s Sea Harvest, with some of the best fried porgy I've had. So fresh.

Next up, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, site of the missing Roanoke Colony. Not really too interesting, just a reconstructed earthen fort there and a theater, which wasn't in season yet.

The rest of the afternoon was spent driving around the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. The goal was to drive until we saw some black bears, but as you can guess, we failed :(. Maybe they were still hibernating? We only saw a bunch of cormorants, opossum and great blue heron. The dirt road really did a number on our car!

Dinner at The Kill Devil Grill. I got the blackened mahi and grits. Super expensive for small portion size :(

Looks like algae bloom in the first image.

And driving around to see animal in their natural habitat? That thought never occurs to me, probably because I can't see any even if I do where I live.

That's what I thought at first! But it's actually all duckweed

I think a lot of the refuge, at least the rivers, are manmade. If you take a look at google maps, all the rivers and such are distinctly at 90 degree angles with each other and follow the sides of the road exactly.
