Description

I hereby declare October to be D&D month. And for the second week, here is an old game proving that totally mindless ARPGs are not a thing of the recent past, even games with D&D license had titles where your entire goal was to "go to next place to kill all monsters and get key for next dungeon".

However, whereas nowadays this Skyrim method of "role-playing" (meaning: glorified hack & slash that pretends to be a game with any thought process attached to it) is the widespread norm with actual RPGs being rare as a rational thought in Alex Jones's cranium, in its time, Icewind Dale was a curiosity: a game that used D&D 2.5E mechanics and the simplest dungeon-crawling gameplay this side of Pathfinder.

This makes me wonder though: if the winner would have ever started it (he won't, he will just farm the cards), would he actually finish it since it is close to the low-IQ games of today, or give up during character creation after not having any idea how to fill the last three character slots?

This description makes me wonder though: why you're so certain, that the person winning this will be male? I admit, given the demographics of gamers in general it's more likely, but as far as I know, there are ladies on this site as well, so maybe some political correctness? :-) Oh, and don't be mad at me for pointing this out, I just needed an excuse to leave a comment other than simply saying thank you. :-)) Thanks for the D&D month giveaway.

Because females are so rare in the level 0 public (or: overall) demographic here, that I can statistically always safely assume that the winner of a level 0 public giveaway on a 20-dollar never-bundled game will be male.
Then again, it will be easy to tell, since female winners are at least able to say a simple thanks, whereas most of my male winners on giveaways like this cannot even belch up a 'спасибо' before starting the next CS/Dota match.

Also, generally and historically, the gender of an unknown person in an English text is by default assumed to be a male.

Now, while I agree with your statements about demographics, that last sentence is most definitely outdated. Historically, you may have a point, but as language evolves it's most common to use the plural form.

For example in the "Cambridge Grammar of the English Language":

They is commonly used with a singular antecedent, as in Someone has left their umbrella behind.

Very true. However, as I said, my experience is that females are a rare sight on these giveaways as a whole (despite one commenting right under this conversation ^.^). Granted, I could try to switch to the singular version of 'they'…

Plus, well, you know the old adage. There are no females on the internet, only guys pretending to be one or undercover FBI agents. =D

Last time I've checked... one moment, please... I was definitely without fe ;)
I won't question your statistics as I only rely on those I've made up myself. But you're right, statistically male tend to be less elusive in ratio to their entering. While I'm not speaking Russian I was at least able to identify without translator what those speechless aren't able to do besides playing games I only know by name :)
Btw do you have any statistics about bots winning here? Especially those level 0 GA.
That said character creation is not only fun but essential... oh, seems I can turn out the light and start playing :D

Bots winning, not so much. You can search for the word 'experiment' on the forum and look for some threads (many by me) that try to compile some numbers. It is an illuminating trek to see some misconceptions about levels and regions.

I started IWD before I played Arcanum and BG and Fallout so I kind of gave up early... was young... never got a 2nd chance afterwards... so I'm entering just in case I'm smarter now.

I was quite interested in this game back in the day, having enjoyed the original Fallout games a lot, but I never ended up playing it. I've got it wishlisted now, but your review makes me reconsider :3
Thanks for the chance!

Imagine it as the Fallout Tactics: low amount of story, all about combat.
If you are into the old Fallouts, Try Baldur's Gate 1. Even the Enhanced Edition may be a good pick, despite it being vastly different to the original. (But even if you had the original, the best way to make it run is to manually make most of the changes and modifications BG1EE does by default, so you are almost at the same spot anyway.)

I just introduced my 9 year old daughter to dungeons and dragons last night. She loved it. I myself started back in AD&D.

Don't know if it was IWD1 or 2 where I got the game to break after I beat the boss the first time. Was so pissed. Re-did it finally later anyway, but boy that wasn't fun.
Thanks for the change. Hopefully this EE includes the DLC + free DLC as compensation for the lacking DLC XD.

It has both Heart of Winter and the Trials of the Luremasters as part of it.:)

What DLC was this lacking (if you don't mind me asking)?

No was just wondering about those 2. Especially since Trials is fairly often overlooked and forgotten.
