A friendly advice – a lot of people don't like when you comment "thanks" or something similar on their giveaways, unless you win it.
Also, if you haven't yet, I suggest reading guidelines and FAQ.

okay sure, I saw similar comments on most giveaways and it seemed like a good a idea to thank someone for the chance to get a game for free, but I suppose I can see how that may be annoying, I appreciate the advice and will take it under advisement
Yeah, a lot of people don't like people commenting something generic. Since public giveaways tend to get a lot of entries even if 0.1% entrants comment "thanks" the notifications pile up. I personally don't mind.
But if you're leaving a comment on giveaways it should rather be related to the giveaway or/and funny.
Also, read descriptions of the giveaways you're entering - there might be either something important or useful.
Also check out discussions - you can often find links to ongoing giveaways which will grant you a better chance than public giveaways.
And I would recommend creating at least one giveaway yourself to get Level 1 - it will increase your chances slightly as well.
