I'll go with Apocalypse Now (not sure if I've written correct title in English). Although Alien was ewually great and I've watched it a couple of times even though I'm not into horrors.

Runner up: While not a great film itself, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is also important simply for restarting the franchise and leading to the other films and later TV revivals. For bringing back Trek and turning into something far larger, that one has to be at least on my "important" list, if not exactly "favorite."

IMDB says there were over 3000 movies that came out during that year. Now as I wasn't born yet I saw none in theaters, but of the few I saw on the first 2 pages of the list, I've seen Aliens, Star Trek, and Life of Brian. I like them all about equally, though probably Aliens the most.

I haven't watched most of the great movies from 1979 yet. I'm gonna watch them this year, though. And from the remaining ones I gotta choose between Life of Brian, Mad Max and Quadrophenia. It's a tight race, but I'd go with Life of Brian for now.
But there are like 20+ more good movies I have to watch from that year and 4 or 5 are said to be some of the greatest movies of all time, so as much as I love Life of Brian, I don't think that at the end of 2019 I'll still think that it's my favourite from 1979 any more.

Not necessarily, but when I'm deciding what film I want to watch, I sometimes pick one that's gonna be 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 or 130 years old over one that's like 1 year away from an anniversary.
It's just a weird little thing.
Last year for example I did a thing where I watched a movie from 2018, then one from 2008, then from 1998, then from 1988, then from 1978 and so on. Until 1888.
Then I did a thing where I watched a movie starting with A, then one starting with B, then one with C, D, E and so on.
After that I did a thing where I watched a movie starting with The A, then The B, The C, The D, etc.
Like I said, just a weird little thing. ^^
