Those games may not look like something worth your while but I assure you - Spiderweb Software knows how to make great RPGs.
Avernum: Escape from the Pit was one of the reasons my master's defence was delayed one year :)

I played the original DOS versions of Exile way back in the day and they kicked my ass, I never could finish them because I kept getting stuck in spots without a save back far enough to reload from to avoid the "death funnel". Brutal games. I hear the remakes are a bit more forgiving.

It is. I'm not into Souls-like difficulty in video games and I finished Avernum: Escape from the Pit (which in fact is a remake of a remake :D) without any problems. Just leveled up while exploring and doing everything I can find on my own. The only thing I lacked a bit was the soundtrack - the music is present only in the main menu. Then... prepare for a long great quiet adventure (sound effects are present ofc) in the depths below.

No music isn't really surprising, I don't remember any of the Spiderweb games I've played having BGM. But that's fine by me, I can just play some of my midi or MP3 collection.

I've heard nothing but good things about Spiderweb Software games. Never had the chance to try any of them, though. Somehow never really heard of them until the past year or two.

Got the nethergate demo on a cd-rom with a monthly pc-gamer edition...
Loved it. Edited savefiles with hex editors, great love for the developers.
That was many years ago, now I just want to get the entire collection and manage to find the time to finish them all.
