Better in many ways, but there are still quite a few people who just want the train route part of it. This is why even the modern revival started as Train Fever before it did the 3D TTD redo as Transport Fever. And the problem with TTD is that you can either limit yourself to trains as a sandbox, but if you enable competitors, then you cannot avoid the others.
Also, this one has a bit bigger nostalgia factor and simpler mechanics. As much as I love OpenTTD, it really got a little too bloated with features, its full UI is closer to a realistic MMO space sim than a game. :) I still play it from time to time though. The new train controls are nice, but sometimes you want something with simpler solutions since you do not have an entire HD screen worth of buttons to make one train go from Point A to point B. :D
+1. I've tried getting into OpenTTD multiple times now and I can't get past the interface learning curve. First time I've run into this, normally I don't have a problem with complicated games.
