Well... maybe this helps?
Hey, at least Photoshop and Lightroom got updates today, it's something!

Not sure you'll cheer up a Photoshop user when you talk about updates. Since the subscription model...

Not sure what you mean, tbh. I've been on the Creative Cloud version since it launched at a half decent price years ago and never looked back, and it's been great so far. The new updates to PS and LR are also very welcome and overdue, especially on the performance side of things!

Glad you're happy with the updates. I'm not a professional, so maybe I can't fully appreciate every new feature, but I (and others) don't agree with the idea that one keeps paying for a software you never own and from time to time you get a bought plugin transformed in a new feature. Just take a look back the pre CC era to see what a new version meant features wise. Don't get me wrong, still consider PS the best in the class, but this new direction driven by shareholders is not my cup of tea. Again, hope you keep having fun with it.

The idea of a subscription model is one that I generally would like to avoid, so I do get where you are coming from. That said, in the case of Photoshop, before the introduction of Creative Cloud, the cost of the base software was practically unattainable for me (PS alone was like $600-800?), and yearly update versions that still cost hundreds of dollars. But since Adobe launched the subscription model, I pay $9.99 a month for access to PS and Lightroom (the latter alone cost $150 in a standalone version), so that makes $120 a year I pay for these two. Plus I get the benefits of cloud-based storage and portfolio hosting, Behance pro, Typekit fonts, etc, and I'm always up to date on the newest version. Also, the updates don't come in big yearly chunks like in the olden days, but it's a steady stream of incremental improvements, some of which are very significant. If you add up the feature upgrades you get in a year, it easily matches or exceeds the big jumps found in the old versions. Yeah, I'm no Adobe apologist or fan, but I'm really having a hard time faulting them on how they turned Photoshop (and Lightroom) around, it's ridiculously good value for the money now.

As I understand you use it professionally. If you use it constantly it somehow justifies the renting. But imagine someone who use it for occasional retouching, designing. Look at these new feature lists implemented along the years. I have a friend who is doing professional work and who's not interested in ~70% of these features. Luckily the firm pays for the rent. I'm just saying that even that $9,99/month (more outside US) it's not justified when you don't need the new features, but still pay to have the software available. It's a a very good software, but it's not yours and you don't have the choice to only upgrade when you consider that you need the new features, like now, since I agree, there are some useful new features. That's why I hope Affinity (or other non-rental developer) succeeds
Sorry rfnkwj for hijacking the thread.

I totally understand, and all things being equal if I could choose I would also prefer a so-called perpetual license to a monthly or yearly subscription. But the reality is that PS and Lightroom (the latter is actually more important for me personally) were never made available at these prices previously. I mean, say I paid four years for the subscription, that would amount to $480 - this would not cover even half the price for the standalone PS and LR products, also I would be stuck with a four year old version of the programs (so if we add one or two upgrade versions of each, that's even more bucks needed). It's just a financial reality that cannot be denied. At the current rate, I guess I could use both of the programs for something like 9-10 years before I would reach the price of the classic versions, which I still think is a fantastic deal.
But I also understand the situation that later down the line, when my photography winds down and I no longer work with these products on a daily basis, I would be screwed being stuck in a situation where unless I pony up and continue with the monthly payments, I lose access to my files and work. This means that sometime in the future, I will probably look for an alternative so I won't be bound to Adobe and their business model. So yeah, I am in agreement with you there, and I also view Affinity and stuff like Capture One (and even Corel) with interest because we need a serious competitor to Adobe that is willing to offer us traditional perpetual licenses. So in that regard, I am wary of these subscriptions and their long-term total financial and operational costs and limitations.
Well, that was an interesting discussion, and I hope rfjnkwj doesn't mind we used his GA for our conversation :D
