... for some reason you've never done a single ticket of mine in 3 years.

That you know of, anyway. )

Yes, I noticed you addressed one ticket prior to this reply. I'm not nearly as stupid as you'd like to think, Khalaq, and I also notice a lot more around here than support seems to think.

I'm just going to give it to you straight. All these warnings you people are handing out are only are serving to provide "public" openings to rile everyone up against you, make excuses and threads, and turning the forums against support for every decision you make (or don't make, as the case may be). I'm not sure whether or not you've noticed, but they're causing more damage than they're preventing, particularly with the long-time users of the site, who seem to believe they're above reproach and the rules.

Despite our differences (and despite my own deserved suspensions) I used to have faith in SG support (or most, until half of Archi's crew were made support and he was allowed to run rampant), but lately it's pointless for anyone to file a report when a slap on the hand is all they get until they call support Nazis or something similar.

I remember a time when suspensions were actually handed out and enforced (I've myself received my fair share), and rules were actually followed rather than fools getting mouthy and making excuses. All of support is looking like a big joke to most of SG lately, and it wasn't always like that. At this point, I miss the days when support actually had some balls and bite.

I always find it curious when you expound upon what you "know" or "understand" while at the same time demonstrating that you neither know nor understand as much as you think you do. It would be easy to become distracted by the psychological puzzle that presents, or by the cynical, caustic tone you seem to take in your response, but I would rather focus instead on the point you are making. I think it is a valuable one.

For some time, now, I have been considering the very thing you highlight; that Support may be getting a bit "soft," these days. I have been asking myself whether or not we should be issuing warnings at all, as there is a lot to be said for simply hammering any toe that dares to touch the line. Social interaction is complex, however, so I have simply been mulling it over in my head. Now that you bring it up, though, I see that I am not the only one sensing this. That being the case, I feel it may be a good time to discuss this amongst the Mods. Thank you for your assistance (and for "giving it to me straight").

You laid all your cards on the table the moment you made up your mind to comment (and more so because you chose to dredge up a months-old comment in the process). Don't blame the other players at the table for playing off your hand. ;)

Now, back on topic -- and perhaps something additional to discuss with your mod buddies -- but isn't a suspension already a warning? So, in a nutshell, you've all been warning people that you're going to warn them further. A two or three day suspension is nothing but a slap on the hand, but it serves multiple purposes:

  1. It gives a person pause to consider their actions and the consequences. It's a clear warning that they've broken the rules, and that further infractions will result in more severe penalties.
  2. It gives them time to "get angry" but also time to cool down afterward. Far fewer rant threads, snarky forum comments, and the like.
  3. It keeps the shit-storm to support tickets (where it belongs) and off the forums. Bringing it back to the forums should lead to additional suspensions. That people even think the rules in someone else's house are "up for discussion" is beyond me.

Believe me, I get why the rules are left open-ended and everything is handled case-by-case. I also believe that's the best way to handle things on a forum such as this. Everyone thinks they're more clever than the guy next to them, and will always try to find a loophole to exploit the rules to their advantage. The more specific the rules get, the easier finding those loopholes becomes. When they get called on the bullshit, they'll have a dozen excuses, play the semantics game, quote the Guidelines and their own interpretation of them, and play whatever bleeding-heart cards they're holding. Hell, I've even seen one fellow claim you folks were "disabling the disabled."

I've been telling you guys this same thing for months now (years, actually, dating way back to when Wallister, Chicken, and Mully were battling it out). You saw (edit: recently) how well those verbal warnings worked out with people like Superfabs, JustArchi, and LostSoulVL. The more "popular" the person, the more people are going to back them up, regardless of whatever rule they might be breaking.

Rules are rules, and should apply to everyone equally. Until that happens, support isn't going to get any respect around here.

I am not casting blame, here, but still a fair point. )

Precisely what I have been thinking.
