I've recently taken the decision to blacklist people not saying thanks after receiving a gift. I've not done that for a long period of time, and I know some people don't do that with ill intent, but I feel that's a simple rule of politeness. If I wanted a bot to receive one of my keys the one from SteamDB says thank you every time :D
How do you stand on that?

I used to do the same thing, but I took some inner distance from the whole SG craze in the last couple of years, and that made me care less about other people's manners. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't blacklist non-thankers.

I'm not at a hard stop really, but I snapped when somone particiapating to PAGY won something from me for the 3rd time, without any word.
So...I blocked this one, and I've done it for a few others too.
We'll see if this will survive the reality check

I have conflicted feelings on it personally. I'd rather see that the game were played than to receive an obligatory and potentially insincere thank you. I don't blacklist folks for not thanking, and I don't blacklist folks for not playing (unless I request it explicitly). My blacklist is smol and people generally only get added for egregious behaviors.
Comment has been collapsed.
I honestly don't exactly feel honored to be one of those as I try to be as civil as I can in public places and I feel sorry if I ever offended you or exhibited egregious behavior in your presence.

I used to have a 7-10 ppl blacklist for exactly this reason. Some haven't logged into SG for 2 years. But I cleared the list the other day because I honestly don't remember the reasons. I might start the list again if we can add a note on blacklist
Comment has been collapsed.
Esgst lets me put notes on people. Its not the most intuitive thing, but I have notes on most folks.

Time to use it after being on the site for 7 years :)

Playing games is something I appreciate, but I have more conflicted feelings on that. I've gifted nearly 2k games. I can't possibly expect people to play them all.
But I've also removed people from my WL that did not play some games (for which I clearly said some playtime was expected).
So as I said, conflicted feelings
Comment has been collapsed.
I think it's completely fair to expect people to install, launch, and see what they think of a game. It's the standard I hold myself to, except that ironically now that I am part of "play a steamgifts win in MONTH", I sit on the wins a bit longer so that I'll have something to enter with.
But yes with so many it doesn't make sense to expect people to 100% or even beat everything.
Comment has been collapsed.
I guess I'd rather people say thanks with more thought. Often it's a generic thank you. I'd rather have less generic thanks and more occasional thoughtful words, like why they like the game, or something.
Comment has been collapsed.
One can do both (at winning and then after playing), though I suppose at the risk of overloading somebody's notifications.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, that's what I try to do.
Comment has been collapsed.
Same. So far it hasn't seemed to have pissed anybody off, but then I don't have that many wins either.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're right, but I''d still not like that someone in real life would not thank me for something I've done for them. Even if it's generic
Comment has been collapsed.
I am the same. I just find it rude. SG is not a vending machine and it seems like the bare minimum to say thank you when you win a game from a stranger who could have kept the game for themselves (or idle it for cards like some do or even sell it for cash now) but chose to give it away.
This being said, I don't know if I prefer people who don't even say anything to those who just leave something like "ty" but that's another topic for another time.
Comment has been collapsed.
Heh generic thank yous are not great, but I'd prefer someone saying me a generic hello than not saluting me :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Mhm. I get that. I mean, I'd love to get a thanks and even when they actually come back and tell me they played it and how they liked it - which is what I always do.
But I know that ppl not always behave the way I do. And I hate excluding ppl. And being mean. So I'm having a hard time blacklisting others. Bc... I don't want to be blacklisted either ;(
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't mind being blacklisted. I rarely enter nowadays , and the people blacklisting me are usually not the types that share a lot of things anyway :D
Comment has been collapsed.
Very true.

For pubic GAs, I don't care about the winner thanking or not thanking. The chance of the game just being a +1 to the winner is quite high. I actually dislike ppl comment "thanks for the chance".
For events/invite only, I expect the winner to provide some type of feedback (on winning the GAs or on the game after they play it). But if they don't, what can I do? I can blacklist them, but what are the chances of the same user winning my GAs again in the future if I don't blacklist them. It seems too much work for 0 gain.
And for blue heart GAs, if a user is on my blue heart list, it is highly likely they would provide some type of feedback, so this would not apply to them.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree on every point apart from the invites/event. As I was saying in another comment, I've had one user winning multiple games from me, and never thanking while having gained hundreds of games. So this one was too much to bear.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm 50/50 on it... I tend to look at the persons history of saying thanks. If there is 80%+ of recent wins without a thanks, the odds of being blacklisted grow dramatically.... that is if I remember that I had something pending to check later.
Sometimes I use thanks to know when I should crate the next batch of GA's, sometimes its an older key and I worry and getting that thanks gets rid of the stress, sometimes its just nice to have a nice little dopamine spike from a thanks.
Comment has been collapsed.
Feeling's mutual. I'll never blacklist a newcomer. But someone with 800 wins that never thanks.....will probably get on the naughty list
Comment has been collapsed.
I always appreciate when it feels like a real person actually gets the game. Better yet when they seem excited to try it.
Comment has been collapsed.
True, I like that too, and this is why I love the U7 group. This is mostly there that you got this the most!
Comment has been collapsed.
I think TGC has affected people and they started to thank others when they win GAs. For me that’s a positive thing even if they use generic messages. It feels weird to give a game to someone and have zero interaction from them.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, this or people getting keys without saying they were the one getting it in threads or discord. I can't understand
Comment has been collapsed.
That's probably down to a lot being grabbed by bots, who haven't been educated on etiquette (yet!)
Come to think of it, that may be behind some of the same behavior on regular GAs.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's endless, if you blacklist those who don't say thanks but you make a lot of GA, you'll soon fill all slots. Also i prefer someone who plays than someone who says thank you.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've blacklisted no more than 40 people up till now and that includes sg tools wrong entries, bullies, and trolls.
So all in all I think it may work in the long term. We'll see.
Comment has been collapsed.
I appreciate if someone thanks for receiving a game, however I won't blacklist if they don't.

Totally fair

After all, some people come from countries with language barriers...
Whether I blacklist someone probably depends on my mood too.
I think I've temporarily blacklisted people like that...
But I mainly use the blacklist for... SGTools rule violators and those who use unacceptable language toward other SG users.
😊
…I'm that regrettable alien who occasionally says narrow-minded things while ignoring my own faults.😂🛸
Comment has been collapsed.
...I would love thanks in whatever primary language someone uses! That sounds fun.
In Taekwondo it's traditional to count in Korean for warmups. But if the person didn't know Korean, I let them count in any other language. It made it fun.
Comment has been collapsed.
🙄Ah, ...Speaking of Taekwondo and Karate, it reminds me of...
During the era when Japanese culture was restricted, it was used as a convenient excuse to practice karate in South Korea. The original manuals were the same, and there were “political circumstances” involved, you see...
(Under the martial arts ban during the GHQ era, Japanese martial arts were prohibited, so to circumvent this, they claimed it as their own national culture.)
No one would believe it, but GHQ tried to eliminate both Korean and Japanese and make English the language instead.
Rather than in the form of laws and regulations, it's more like “circulars” or “memoranda (SCAPIN)”—but it's still a frightening story, this cultural genocide, to a greater or lesser extent.
It's terrifying how war and major disasters can become catalysts for erasing entire cultures.
And the fact that excessive responses can have lasting repercussions for generations to come is beyond words.
...
Some inherit, some protect, and words endure.🤔
Even seemingly trivial routines like that must have meaning in being passed down, I suppose.
Comment has been collapsed.
We are all doing that to a certain extent. And most of the people around me are aliens anyway....🤣🤣
Comment has been collapsed.
It's so easy. I just don't understand why people don't say thanks.
At the same time, since it's so easy, the difference between somebody who says thanks and somebody that doesn't may not be that large. So it doesn't really influence my blacklist choices much.
Comment has been collapsed.
Some gave the (good) argument that chances are low to gift someone you already gifted.
But even then, most people here do not make real public giveaways, or at level 0. So eveyrone filters already a bit
Comment has been collapsed.
I've won multiple things from you, though two of them had to be deleted because they were from unlucky-7 and I had just gotten my 8th win (on the SAME HOUR!!) from someone else. It was either my most lucky or least lucky day on this site ever, depending on how you look at it.
It's possible I won another thing from you on unlucky-7 before that, even, but I can't tell because I'm blocked from looking at wins in groups I'm no longer part of.
I also got an "orphan" key drop from you for the The Chant, which I played and beat - it was great, 8/10.
So, low yes, but maybe not that low ;-0
Probably it helps that you are so generous.
Comment has been collapsed.
i've sent you your first win :)
Mr Sun's hatbox, and indeed another one that got rerolled, so yeah, this can happen :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh gosh I feel embarrassed I forgot that.
Comment has been collapsed.
No worries !
But this is something I like. First win on SG is always a magic moment. Even if the game is bad or not so interesting. It's still the first thing you got here.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not really bothered about the thanks. I feel weird when someone thanks me for anything.
I just hope the winner wanted the game with the intention of playing. They don't have to play, just the intention. Our backlogs are longer than our life so I don't really expect people to play the game.
Comment has been collapsed.
I appreciate any thanks I get, but honestly if the winner doesn’t thank me I completely forget about the giveaway after I’ve sent the key, so I don’t remember to feel miffed. Best of both worlds, I guess :)
I still haven’t added anyone to my blacklist. There are users I’d prefer to avoid, sure, but I haven’t encountered anyone I really wouldn’t want to win my giveaways, if that makes sense.
Comment has been collapsed.
At the end of the day, this is not a very important question. I know my opinion is a bit extreme on that, and this is not so serious when someone in the world does not thank you .
But I feel if these people can't be bothered for a simple thanks, why would they be bothered to give something to others, or even respect other people?
This is not a behavior I want to encourage.
Comment has been collapsed.
For me are a thanks after a win basic manners that i expect from my winners. It's the bare minimum to say, because the gifter spend money and invested time.
Each one that don't have this basic manners will not win a second time from me WHEN i have a BL slot free.
Only this way such people will maybe change their behavior.
Sadly the BL is limited to 1k, which force me to limit the BL to users with level 5 and higher.
And that force me to not do GAs below level 5 if it isn't for my WL or group.
If i had only the option to gift my leftover games to people that don't know the word "thanks" after winning or to throw it in the waste/bin, i would throw it in the waste/bin.
Comment has been collapsed.
I still have a lot of space in my BL list, particularly with the suspensions that occured in the past (but still even perma, there are some that I keep inside)
But I'm still very satisfied when I can give something to a newcomer, who's still happy to receive a gift :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't really care about people writing, "Thank you" after they win the game, I just assume they might appreciate the win, and don't want to write generic "Thank you". I remember that one person wrote feedback (he also wrote thanks for the win) for his win on my steam profile He was suspend or something for a while, that he has really enjoyed the "Pathfinder: WoTR".
I used to blacklist people, that makes giveaways mainly in small groups. Nowadays I just use sgtools.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sg tools is my favorite tools . It's not perfect, as it blocks too much on certain things, and not enough on others.
Sill this is the tool I'm the most confident in.

To follow up on a reply I just made, I can easily see a point in the future where smarter bots (presumably Gen-AI driven) know how to automatically thank you for their win, and even write a "personal" thank you based on the game description that sounds better than 90% of what people actually write.
Sobering thought. Gen-AI may not be as smart as us but it's sure willing to work harder than many of us have the time, desire, or moral compunction to. I fear the future of non face-to-face interaction becoming more and more generated by AI, and even leading to AIs chatting to AIs, with no human in the loop at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
It may not be a bad thing. But if you've not played Detroit : Become Human, you should :)

I only have 2 users on my blacklist and its just since like 2 months. I even already forgot why i put one of them there? Would need to ask Herb :D
The other one was leeching thru all groups.
Before i had a clean BL and idk how much i care tbh to maintain this list.
I cant even make a note right? Then like 1 year later i wont have an idea why i put them there lol.
So im probably not too much of a help in this topic ^^
