I'm rather unsure if I should join cause I just refunded AC. Maybe having the ultimate edition will make it funner since all of the cars aren't locked behind dlcs?
The base game's car selection is pretty disappointing, though one's experience depends pretty much what you like to drive and most importantly, if you have proper steering wheel to play AC with. I tried at first with X360 controller, it was very frustrating experience until I bought T500RS.
But as for your question, I personally like older cars which have H-shifter and overall lesser power, so my favourite cars (outside of boatload of mods) come single-handedly from the DLC's. Try your luck if you feel so!
That holds true - controller is a bare minimum for such simulator and pretty much any wheel is heaps better than controller. And to be honest, I'm rather surprised that it even allows keyboard for driving as it ain't meant to played with only it.

I should maybe try it with a controller too, since I played on keyboard cause I don't have a wheel, the reviews said it too, no wheel=no game

It allows you to play with keyboard but the controls aren't that properly mapped, like arrow keys for driving, no thanks.
