I have weird feelings towards horror games, they are really unnerving yet thrilling to play. I feel that a good horror game is better than a good horror movie because it puts YOU in the limelight of the horrors that lie within. I have watched a couple horror movies in the past, most notably 'Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Christine, that one movie with the vampire in the cabin somewhere and it kills everyone and it is locked in the basement and then there is maple syrup everywhere & ultimately, the entire Saw franchise which is my favorite horror movie franchise of them all. They were all great movies, there was no particular one that kept me on the edge but they were all pretty scary, maybe Christine being the least scary. A Nightmare on Elm Street was pretty scary, but I don't think it tops the fear I experienced playing the following game.

Why I think horror games are the superior form of horror media than just watching a horror movie filled with repetitive jumpscares and the Wilhelm scream is because there exists such a thing as Psychological Horror games. I recently finished Iron Lung, a horror game by David Szymanski and the creator of many other very cool games. I read the reviews before & after playing the game and honestly, it truly left me thinking. Most reviews said the game wasn't scary enough and that it wasn't worth the money and all that stuff, but the thing is, I was shaking so much after playing it I had to actually take a rest because my heart was pumping so fast. What I realized, is that people didn't find it scary because there was nothing to be scared of in the first place (depends how scary you think a giant fish in a blood ocean is), I was scared throughout the entire game when the radar started beeping every time and I was anxiously checking the camera every 30 seconds to make sure I wasn't being followed. For the short time I was playing the game, it was very intense. There is no music in the game, just ambience and noises to lay the pavement for what's to come. My mind started making noises up in my head, little clings and clangs on the metal walls and ultimately I started hearing beeping even though the radar wasn't beeping, I was so emotionally moved by this game it made me want to write this paragraph.

Currently the list of horror games I've played is small, because I can only ever try 1 or 2 horror games in a certain time period until I recover mentally from the endeavor because they are just that horrifying. I have yet to tackle Amnesia: The Bunker which is quite the step up from something like Iron Lung, or so I've heard. The courage I need to play it is ungodly. The only horror game I come back to is Lethal Company, it is scary but also extremely hilarious (if I am playing with friends that is). What I believe makes Lethal Company so fun yet traumatizing is the unpredictability, every round you play is different one way or another because the rooms are all randomly generated and monsters appear at random, sometimes there are multiple of them, sometimes none. Lethal Company has a very cooperative playstyle in mind, but it doesn't enforce it. That's what makes the game great. It's very important to communicate with your teammates and not get lost, because the last thing you want is to get lost and find yourself with a 7 foot tall black figure staring at your across the hall, just, don't stare back. The absence of control over your situation while playing this horror game is a very unusual feeling, even with the tools to rid most moons of horror and terror and yet I feel small and lonely. What makes the game especially great is that there are a lot of ambient noises, which do absolutely nothing than fuel the fire that is your fear. I have been absolutely frozen in fear sometimes listening to all the different sounds and noises the game presents at me, although I know they probably don't mean anything, key word probably. I love this game because although it is a horror game, we end up laughing our asses off in the end.

I'd be happy if any of you would like to share some horror game experiences of your own and what left you scarred the most. I am quite new to this horror stuff and I'd love to know a few suggestions regarding some "fun" horror games. I love the thrill, it's not as good as something like racing games or shooters but it is a different kind of thrill and only horror games can satisfy it, have a good one ya creeps.

Best way to eat a potato?

View Results
Mashed, I like my potatoes nice and yummy soft ^_^
RAW
Boiled in some w a t e r
Fried on a pan with butter mmmmm~~
Deep fry the living HECK out of it
D- d- d- d- did he just say p- p- POTATO???
Mashed & fried, crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside (kind of like me)
Leave it in the ground.
Very lame and boring answer: I don't like potatoes

I don't get scared easily, Doki Doki bored the shit out of me, tried it twice, Amnesia and Outlast were enjoyable, but ultimately not that scary.
The only two games that actually scared me are
Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare
Darkwood (although this too became not scary in the endgame), but the first impact was crazy good.

If Doki Doki bored the heck out of you then I must say I feel more comfortable trying it, I definitely will try Amnesia then when I get to it but not sure about Outlast.

Darkwood is recommended, again. I wish to try it.
Imscared I heard is also really good, but not sure if it's my thing.

+1 to SOMA recommendations. While not much of an action game, it is definitely scary and leaves you thinking about ...stuff (I don't want to spoil)... for quite a while. It is also quite underwater-y, which is a setting you seem to like.
I can't really understand everyone who suggests Doki Doki. It has nice twists, but except for a couple scare-jumps, I wouldn't define it scary at all.

When did I say that? Took me a second to realize that the Iron Lung takes place in an ocean, I just thought about it as a big pool of human blood. They really try to ease the fear by calling it "an ocean".

Doki Doki is still worth a try though right? A nice stepping stone before I am brave enough to conquer Amnesia.

You didn't say that, but checking radar frantically and the importance of ambient noises (cling-clangs on the walls? Where better than a submarine?) made me think that, I'm sorry if I was mistaken.

Doki doki is free, so it is definitely worth a try - even for the little twists I was talking about.

No, you were completely right, Iron Lung IS a game where you get placed into a blood ocean inside a rusty submarine.

Iron Lung definitely made me never want to board a submarine, EVER.

I'd recommend The Cat Lady - more psychological horror. This is a game you need to stick with for a while - it's worth it to get past the slow start and the confusing narrative until it "clicks".

Nope. nuh uh, not for me.

This is the sort of game/video tape I'd find in a serial killer's house. Too scary.

Ok. You asked for psychological horror. Suggesting that my taste in horror would be found at a serial killer's house might not have been entirely necessary. but whatever - you do you.

I didn't mean it like that! It looks really creepy and scary, disturbing even. From all the more commercial horror games I've seen this one is the most scary looking of them all, compared to Iron Lung that looks like at least 3 times more scary. The trailer makes the game look very obnoxious and tense, not sure how many jumpscares there are. Very unique style of game as well, I am fond of it, like paper cutouts or something.

How long is the game on average? Now that I look at it again it actually looks somewhat, fun. I've not tried a proper point and click horror game before.

It isn't exactly "horror" as much as a psychological look at depression. But to sufferers of depression, having it is pretty horrible.

How long does it take to beat The Cat Lady?
How long is The Cat Lady? | HowLongToBeat
When focusing on the main objectives, The Cat Lady is about 8 Hours in length. If you're a gamer that strives to see all aspects of the game, you are likely to spend around 12 Hours to obtain 100% completion.

8 hours. That's quite a long story.

I think I'll leave this on my wishlist. So rather than just a horror game, it's kind of like experiencing how someone with depression might feel? It surely seems like an interesting take on a horror game. Thank you for the suggestion.

No hard feelings , sorry I came off a little rude...

Here's a small list that I can recommend, some of them are more action/adventure-oriented than others but I've tried collecting those that don't rely on jumpscares/chasing sequences and instead focus on atmosphere.

  • Silent Hill (obviously, namely original four games).
  • Alan Wake
  • Bulb Boy
  • INSIDE
  • Call of Cthulhu
  • Detention
  • Little Misfortune
  • Lust for Darkness
  • Moons of Madness
  • Observer
  • Observation
  • Oxenfree
  • SOMA

SOMA for what, the 5th time now? Little Misfortune is something I don't own but I can play through family sharing, which is nice. Oxenfree is something I've never heard about before. It's very, well, different.

Not everyone reads through every post in order to not repost previous suggestions, so maybe try not to be a complete ass to those trying to help you find a game that you asked for help in finding?

I didn't mean the comment to be harmful, I just liked to point out that people really like SOMA and it is very worth playing. Tone doesn't really translate through text well but I didn't mean anything bad. I apologize if I came off as rude or disrespectful, it was not my intent.

I am very interested in SOMA now, before I was thinking SOMA was your average horror game like Amnesia or Resident Evil or something but the suggestions really make me want to try it now. Darkwood is something also recommended a lot now and it didn't look that neat to me at first but I am growing an interest.

I was about to say that I don't really play many horror games, then I took a look at the games I've played and realized that quite a few are technically horror (various adventure games, cinematic platformers, hidden object games) and some are horror games by their own admission (Resident Evil, Alan Wake, etc), so I guess I often tend to see them as "tense" rather than "scary". I honestly think that the scariest game I ever played was Lone Survivor, which is partly why I never finished it, and that one was a pixel art game but it somehow managed to make me extremely nervous. I should probably finally go ahead and play it again.

But in general I think psychological horror works best in written form, simply because it leaves a lot of gaps for the mind to fill.

I didn't think much about psychological horror, I thought it was just like a form of horror which expressed the insanity of someone's mind(?). When I finally played my first psychological horror game I realized what everything was about but it wasn't moving. Iron Lung WAS moving, and it really cemented one of the scariest horror game experiences into my brain.

I agree with you mostly, but again it's the same problem that movies face. You aren't THE character, you feel disconnected from everything but playing a game where YOU ARE the person in fear is what makes horror games what they are. We've come a long way with horror games, I love them all to death.

It can be an intimidating genre to get into, of course I'd recommend the classics (silent hill, resident evil, fatal frame, rule of rose, haunting ground etc) which are amazing but they're really expensive to buy so they're really only playable with an emulator. Although out of all of them I have to say the fatal frame games are my personal favourite, the story of all the games leaves me heartbroken and feeling ALL the feelings, for a long time afterwards. 2 of them have been remastered recently(ish) if you're interested!

For shorter games to dip your toes into, I'd recommend little misfortune, fran bow, sally face, little nightmares, bramble the mountain king, omori and undertale. (I hear they're great but I've never played them myself tbh) Also chilla's art games, spirit hunter death mark 1+2, (if you like visual novels) soma, alan wake. I could probably go on but I don't want to overwhelm you :P Although last recommendation if you're into cozy horror, dredge is a fantastic game. Ok no more, I promise. Good luck with whatever you choose! :)

This is somehow the most thorough recommendation list I've seen, I can already play Little Misfortune and I also own Undertale. I finished Undertale once and although it was creepy at times, it was very cool, one of the first story games I ever enjoyed. I lost count, but must be the 6th time someone has recommended SOMA, it HAS to be a good game then, right? There is this SOMA mod I really want to play as well based on SCP-0 or one of its concepts. I wonder how that turned out, complete fan project.

Thank you for the recommendations, I'll check out Fatal Frame again as well. Very interesting choice with Fran Bow and Sally Face, not quite my thing but very unique and good horror games, a friend of mine loves those to death and says the are AWESOME.

Nice!! I played a bit of undertale years ago on xbox game pass but I just never finished it... I really should give it another go. I think so at least, amazing story and atmosphere, but I just hope we haven't hyped it up too much for you! That sounds really cool, I don't think I've heard of it. What's the name of the mod?
I'm glad to hear it, I hope you find some games to your taste :)

I highly recommend finishing one playthrough of Undertale, I have a friend who loves it to death and has over 100 hours in Undertale. I really liked it as well even though I don't like story driven games that much. I can't recall the name of the SOMA mod but I think it was "When Day Breaks" or something like that. I heard it was really good for a fan project.

Fatal Frame looks like too much for me at the moment, looks like a great game but the style is a bit different to what I am used to and the trailer was pretty scary, but I think I'll give SOMA a go sometime. Maybe Outlast and Darkwood too, who knows. Currently I need courage for Amnesia.

Your list of horror movies are outdated and barely scary compared to what’s come out more recently. Try the descent, or babadook or oculus.

As for gaming, outlast scared me so much I couldn’t play for more than 15-20 minutes at a time

Good movies, but not that scary. I want to watch Babadook, I really like what I am hearing about it.

Outlast sounds a little step up from what I can currently handle, but I am uncertain if it is worse than Amnesia. If I can handle Amnesia I'll definitely try Outlast 1.

outlast is my favorite horror of all time!! the beauty of it besides the great stories and nightmare inducing characters is the fact you can pretty much play at your own pace. sure, someone could be trying to hunt you down but you got the ability to regain your cool before stepping out and completing your objectives from how its designed (though how successful this is varies lol). its also able to run on low to high end pcs so anyone can experience it to its fullest basically. the dlc is the cherry on top of it all and is scarier than the base game! you'll be laughing, crying in fear, and running for your dear life constantly :D

Nice seeing you around as well Nooba! This is very encouraging, I definitely want to try Outlast now too. I heard that the Outlast collection/trilogy or whatever is constantly on sale during bigger sales, so my only option is to wait for that and praise myself by scaring myself.

I believe why Outlast does survival horror well is because you don't really have a way to fight for your life except outsmart the enemy, which I really like. I am willing to give Outlast a try.

yup! i got both during the halloween sale but completed the first game cracked and tried the second one the same way beforehand. the second is very different from the first and isnt necessary to get full enjoyment out of the series but they both have their charms. as for outlast trials it seems solid though i havent seen much on it but i was hyped for it and it seems to have held up well.

stealth horror can be a hit or miss since some games dont know how to properly build up the atmosphere and make it both immersive and engaging BUT this one does it INCREDIBLY good.

also you'll enjoy using the camera features a ton! plus the amount of difficulty modes help too depending if you're a scaredy cat or like penguinz0 and can withstand anything without a shred of emotion lol

feel free to make a thread updating on your experience or updating it on this one, im sure multiple people would love to hear about your playthrough!

I have the intention of playing Amnesia: The Bunker and Nightmare of Decay and documenting my experiences with them here.

This thread was just a start to see what amazing horror games I could find, I have found 2 that I am very interested in, Hypnagogia and The Shadow Over Route 80. I will also want to try SOMA, Darkwood and maybe Outlast in the future, but Outlast depends only if I enjoy Amnesia.

I've heard great things about Outlast, I also watched a few videos that explained the story a little bit not in that much detail and I really like how it was all written, very solid story. One comment I've heard floating around is that "Outlast never does the same jumpscare twice" and it makes the game really unique to other stealth horror games.

We'll see. Still procrastinating about play Amnesia: The Bunker :/

Did someone already mentioned Welcome to Kowloon (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2515240/Welcome_to_Kowloon/)? Game is short, but also very disturbing.
Or Madison (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1670870/MADiSON/) if you want to scare the shit out of yourself.
Also Five Nights at Freddys (https://store.steampowered.com/app/319510/Five_Nights_at_Freddys/), but not sure which game of the series is the best.
Last but not least The Mortuary Assistant (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1295920/The_Mortuary_Assistant/) will also scare the shit out of you.

All new entries as much as I've seen!

I am a fan of Mortuary Assistant and Five Nights At Freddy's, although I am yet to play Mortuary Assistant and tried a few FNAF games. I did play a few FNAF games and the best one in my opinion is FNAF 2 and FNAF 4, they scared me the most.

Mortuary Assistant is cool, but I think too jumpscare-y if you know what I mean, when Outlast doesn't do the same jumpscare twice (which I very cool and unique) I think Mortuary Assistant falls flat on that. I was tempting to get Mortuary Assistant from a horror bundle not too long ago but decided not to.

Great suggestions!
