Well - it's partially a discussion topic, partially a PSA.

So I log onto steam today and what do I see at top of Bestseller list? Age of Empires Legacy Bundle. For 12,74€ / 13.74$. Don't get me wrong - I love AoE games and I believe that anyone even mildly intrested in strategy games should own them, but the point is that the same bundle is avaiable on Humble Bundle right now in top tier which costs 15$. And for these 15$ you will get not only get this bundle buty also 9 other excellent games worth much much more than this 1,26$ difference.

So what do you think? How the hell game from currently running bundle at top of Steam Bestseller? Are people really so ignorant not to bother to do even smallest research before biying? Are they so easily manipulated that all it takes to get sales is to put a nice green -XX% box before the price and they will buy it without second thought? Or are just Russian traders (the bundle costs only 4.36€ in Russia) capable of buying enough copies for trading purposes to boost a title to the very top of Steam Bestselling list?

Discuss! ;p

(And if you're considering buying this bundle for yourself FFS get it on Humble - donate to charity and get 9 excellent games as a bonus ;p)

As others have said, not everyone knows about bundle sites or checks them.

What's to discuss? People are stupid, that's a known fact.

following that line of thinking, people are stupid because they buy games from steam, since most games end up on bundles like that :P

nope - this is a different case. Ofc you may wait 3-6 mnths or even few years until a game gets into some bundle - but after all this time the value of the game will be much lower comparing it to these months/years earlier. In this case at the same time game was avaiable on Steam as well as in Bundle. It's totally different story from game being on steam and maybe being in some bundle in future, with keeping in mind the fact that it may never get bundled.

To be honest, I never even thought to look. Until I found this site, I didn't know much about bundle sites, or other sources for steam games. I would typically buy games new, and didn't get too many because of it.

God forbid people dont spend 2hrs researching every possible thing before making a purchase to save a few quid. Even if they did, and came across that bundle, what about those who only have steam wallet from selling cards or something? I dont think its fair to label people stupid just because they dont know everything you know, or do everything you do. Its really not that hard of a concept to understand that the internet is a fuck huge place and that not everyone is going to know about every god damn site/deal/meme/w.e.

2 hours? more like 2 seconds - as already pointed in discussion before when you'd google Age of Empires Legacy Bundle 1st shop on top was steam followed by Humble Bundle.

And do you honestly believe that all purchases were made via Steam Wallet and all these people went for it just because they only have steam wallet and no other payment methods avaiable? And that solely by wallet purchases an item would rise to top of Bestseller list?

As I mentioned before, we are ALL ignorant about some things we consume/purchase. Why are you wanting to bag on the folks that choose to buy this way?

There is something that you purchase that you are ignorant about, too. And you'll be ignorant again about something else, too. Doesn't mean you're less of a person or stupid.

We would literally go insane if we measured every...single...purchase this way.

I'm sure chicken breasts are sometimes on sale/cheaper at other surrounding groceries. But by the time I measure the amount of fuel/time/effort spent going to 5 different places for the best deals, even if I save a small amount of money, I have vastly complicated my life and wasted precious moments I could use elsewhere.

We're all doing that in this thread. Lol.

And that's not a dig on you, but myself as well. :)

I think this is common for something that is bundled to also have a spike in sales elsewhere. I think it's easy to forget that such an involved community such as forum goers on SteamGifts constitutes only a small portion of the entire Steam community. I never really see bundles advertise, yet they always have a fair amount of sales, and I am lead to believe this is because it travels by word of mouth, and although many active community members here may have tons of Steam friends, I would not doubt for a second if I was told the average Steam user only has a handful (or less) of Steam friends. So it doesn't surprise me at all that people buy it [from the Steam store] when it's on sale in a bundle, many people may just see their friends hopping into the game, not knowing their friend bought it from a bundle and not from the Steam store and then decide to get it themselves from the Steam store since they see it's on sale.

also I don't think it's particularly fair to call them "stupid," again our community isn't telling of the entire steam community, I think somewhat obviously, people who are regulars at a site for winning free games are probably more conscious of trying to find the best deal than people with a steady full time job, what may be big savings to us may be chump change to others.

edit: and are you telling me that you have not once bought a game on Steam without checking to see if it's in a bundle somewhere? :P

do you indicate that SG users may not have steady full time job? ;p

as for edit - well - unless it's obvious price mistake (game going for 99% off etc - will be fixed soon so have to react fast) I will usually at least just google it. Like mentioned in this example - googling Age of Empires Legacy Bundle was giving Humble Bundle near top (right asfter Steam Store, Screenhots and IsThereAnyDeal) - so researching it would take seconds ;p Ofc I will not wast countless hours researching - but quick few-seconds google-check before you buy something online is always a good habit to have ;)

I'm just saying that on average people here are probably more likely to be more concerned about getting the best deals if they are willing to spend a considerable amount of time (it adds up) to get free games.

I don't know about stupid. Unaware yes, but different folk have different priorities.

Before I discovered Steamgifts, bundles etc. I didn't buy that many games. When I did I'd look at the price and decide if I wanted pay that amount for that game. If it represented value for money to me then I'd buy it.

Now what I see as value for money these days has changed because of bundles, I've become a cheap bastard. The thought process is exactly the same though, I'm just better informed about cheap games. It probably means I'm less informed about other things I used to care more about as after all there's only so much time in a day. What is stupid is me now owning more games than I'll ever play in my lifetime.

Howlongtobeat.com is enlightening, but it quickly becomes overwhelming trying to add each game. I haven't added any games to my profile in 7 months, but it still lists me as needing to spend 105 Days, 26 Mins to beat my current backlog.
