So, I have a huge opportunity, 70% discount on every tech stuff I want until 2016.
I'm from Uruguay so parts may be limited, you can request different parts, but add 40% of the value in USA / EU to the item, and there's a possibility it's not available for me.

My current PC:

Total: $3050 ($915 after discount)

My objetive is ending up with two working PCs, the best one for me and the other one to sell or whatever.

Now, my doubts.
I've read the Titan X and the 980Ti perform pretty much identically., but there's a huge difference of 500$ between them.
I think the 2nd option is way better.

  • Is the Titan X worth it over the 980Ti, and perform good enough to get it over all the items I can add in the 2nd option?
  • Is such a big MB as the ones in the 2nd option actually great? I mean, it costs $500! Here's a list of all 1151 MBs I can get and their prices http://www.banifox.com/Socket-1151-Intel/ver-todos-productos.html
Is it really worth spending 500$ in one, if there are other good ones around $300? (and I could use that money for something else, or dont, doesnt matter)

  • Which PSU is better, the one I currently have or this one? http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.uy/MLU-431388583-thermaltake-fuente-para-pc-600w-atx-tr2-600nl2nc-_JM
Will my current PSU stand the new components? If not, which one would you recommend? Cheap if possible.

  • Here's an important one. The MB and CPU use 1151 socket. For some reason, CPU coolers with that socket dont exist in Uruguay, lol. I've read any 1155/1150 cooler will fit anyway, is that correct? And will it fit in the MB without interfering with the RAM? I've never had an ATX MB before so I dont really know how big it is.

  • Will the GPU fit on my current case?

  • I dont plan on overlocking anything, so I guess I dont need extra cooling anywhere, right? (only thing I've added is two fans to the side of the case)

I'll buy everything in 5 days, so I have plenty of time to decide.

You can use http://www.mercadolibre.com.uy/ if you want to search for something and see the price here. (it's in Spanish, but you probably understand the titles anyway)

Thanks in advance!
Martin

Edit: Since I dont plan on overclocking anything, the CPU will be the normal i7-6700, not the K one.

Edited the links, sorry for that!
The problem I have with the two GPUs is that the price goes up drastically. a CPU upgrade will cost more than $500 regardless of the CPU I choose. (actually I just noticed since I wont overclock it, I dont really need the K version which is $120 more expensive)
There's -120 from the CPU and -250 from the MB, but one GPU is $1100... :/

Glad to hear the cooler will fit.

Added option 3. I dont really play with three monitors and I have never used cards in SLI so I'm not really sure about this one, but added it anyway.
Edit: Deleted option 3. Two 780Ti increase the price a lot even with the CPU change. And I'd need a SLI bridge plus a new (and good) PSU, so I guess that's over my current budget

I do edit videos quite often actually, not that my videos are something I prioritize but I like these things done quite fast. I also tend to have multiple programs / tabs open at the same time, while rendering something, programming or something like that, so I guess a great CPU would be handy.

I left the K CPU for now for the price reference only, but the one without the K is $560, so unless I plan on overclocking it, I'll just get the normal one. And that leaves another $120 to spend on top of the $150 I already had from the MB change.

A Titan won't make such a difference in video editing, it was made for video games so some kids can have a one size larger e-penis. The only thing the Titan has that is actually great in video editing is the massive amount of VRAM. If you edit 4k+ videos, that may be the only deal-changer as that resolution needs a lot of memory for even basic operations.

Yeah I'm probably left with the option 2 only by now.

I'll definitely get that GPU and RAM, (probably MB as well), only thing left to decide is the CPU I guess. And whether I'd need a new PSU or not.

If you buy a Titan, you'll need a new PSU. That is not a question.

I meant he 980Ti :P
The TItan is pretty much out of my head at this point.

Well, the 980 Ti draws more than 200 W too, so your PSU will likely choke when it needs to fully power both the processor and the graphics card. You need at least a very high-grade 600 W one or a high-grade 650 W one to accompany that card.

The reason I'm sticking to the 6700 is because I couldnt find any other CPU that's worth upgrading from my current one.
My current CPU (i7-3770K) is worth $500 here. The i7-6700 is $580 and there's a noticeable difference in performance.
If I upgrade the CPU, it'll be around that price range, and if it's between my current one and the 6700, I'd just get the 6700, $80 wont make a difference if it performs better.

I could change the MB with this one http://www.banifox.com/Socket-1151-Intel/GIGABYTE-INTEL-GA-Z170X-GAMING-5-1151/flypage.tpl.html
and that leaves $150 to spend on something else.
Maybe a new PSU with that spare money?

  • No, unless you have money to burn. In that case, yes.
  • No, unless you want to do an SLI/CrossFire of one of the "double" cards like Titan or the 390X. Their only benefit in practise that it is significantly more comfortable to tinker around them, especially if you buy a similarly large case.
  • Neither. Both are equally terrible. If you really have this amount of money to even consider a Titan, the bare minimum is to get a PSU with active PFC so your power company won't randomly melt your thousand-dollar computer.
  • Yes, they fit. The only difference in the 115x sockets are the number of pins on the CPUs. All sizes are the same.
  • Yes, although the Titan may be a little crowded.
  • The Intel CPUs can take the heat, but the GPUs you are considering are small thermal plants. At least two side fans and an additional back fan is more than recommended, especially in warmer climates. Plus a non-stock CPU cooler, preferably around 35 USD or more. Noctua and Zalman have great coolers, and some of them weigh less than a ton.

Although I have to add something: it is a bit foolish to spend so much money now on a PC when the new generations are around the corner. If MS pushes DX12 enough, the current GPUs under the AMD R9 300 series will fall off in months after DX12 gets widespread. But if you have enough money to change your card at least in the next 12-24 months without issues, then go ahead with the GTX 980 Ti.

Thanks for your answer!
I'll change the MB for this one http://www.banifox.com/Socket-1151-Intel/GIGABYTE-INTEL-GA-Z170X-GAMING-5-1151/flypage.tpl.html
Since I probably wont overclock the CPU, I might get the one without the K which is $120 cheaper.
I'll probably get a PSu with that money then.

I know, I thought about that too. To be honest, this will only cost me around $1200 after all. I will have two computersm and a PC with i7-3770k, GtX 780, 8gb ram and more... is worth a lot here, and I might be able to sell it for $1200 or more. It's kind of a free upgrade I'm getting, so I literally have to take this opportunity :P

I get this 70% discount every 2 or 3 years because of some tax bonux thing companies get here, so I'll probably be able to keep upgrading it in the future.

If you have time, look around the ASUS, ASRock, and MSI motherboards. Nothing wrong with the one you linked, and I especially love the PCI-E slot arrangement on it, but those three generally have mobos with great arrangement, ports, and a good price. Just try to get one where the onboard graphics have a DisplayPort + DVI or a DisplayPort + HDMI setup (like this one, again). This way if your GPU bites the dust, you can still comfortably run two monitors on the Intel HD 5300 chip.

I'm a bit tight when it comes to MB variety. This two are decent as well: http://www.banifox.com/Socket-1151-Intel/Z170A-Krait-Gaming/flypage.tpl.html and http://www.banifox.com/Socket-1151-Intel/Z170A-Gaming-M3/flypage.tpl.html
I actually chose the GIGABYTE one for the colour only, found these three almost the same. I didnt want that "audio boost" thing from the ASUS ones to mess with my audio card. Probably wont be a problem, but I'm always scared when it comes to audio, I hate having to fix my headset and speakers confugiration over and over.

If my GPU dies, I die as well, just saying :P
