Well just saw the GOG version has a patch making the game works on modern OS and you can apply it on the Origin version.
Having attempted to play it through Gamepass I can't currently try it but it's worth a shot.

I have the same experience, on Origin and Win10. And on Steam the system requirements for the game say for the OS:
"Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, Windows 7"
And Steam requires Windows 10.
The best idea is to buy it on Gog and run it on some older Windows partition or dedicated legacy gaming machine (that people interested in playing older games are likely to have, I suppose). I like Steam, but it IS an online DRM, and it IS requiring Windows 10 now. Choose your purchase platform wisely, everyone who wants to play their games for years to come.

Interestingly I'm lately trying to gather parts to build a 386. And another machine for Windows 95/XP games, nothing very powerful.
There a lot of forums full of people showing their PCs, from original PC to Pentium-III and so, playing the games when they were younger.
It's a pity that when some computer generation pass you are not able to use older software sometimes even using emulator.
For example some windows 95 games can't run now, even in windows XP perhaps they were already buggy.
And the change from DOS to nowadays is simply too much.
And regarding the platform, I'm at complete loss that Steam can sell a game that needs Windows XP while Valve's launcher requires Windows 10. Is it incompetence or greed? But sure, GOG won't have that problem. If you have the game you are free to play it on whatever SO that you may have, even if it's Windows 3.1 or MS-DOS 3.3.
I regret buying some games on Steam instead than in GOG, mainly for price but also because having one platform is obviously more practical. The deserve more customers as they treat us much better than Steam

I've just seen on the subreddit Gamedeals, the GOG version has a patch the Origin doesn't.
That may be the solution. And there is a way to apply the patch on the Origin version.
The thing is I tried through gamepass and I don't currently have a subscription.
So I can't try.

The physical version worked for me a year or two back on Windows 10. Though with games it'll always be about luck if it works and how many bugs you'll see, no matter how polished the game is :/

I think I still have the original CD for Alpha Centrauri and the Alien Expansion. One of the few games I even played in LAN with friends. And started to learn that I don't like competitive computer games :P

Neat. One of my all-time favorites! Shame the PC versions don't have achievements. Not a deal-breaker, but they do literally make the game 3x longer if you're a completionist (that rooftop traversal does get old after a while though).
Anybody know why this wasn't on Steam all these years? I'm assuming it's just EA Origin/app bullshit?

Pretty old app ID, SteamDB history goes back to 2013, steam-tracker even mentions 2009, so I guess they originally wanted to publish on Steam, but then someonce decided to go for more exclusivity of Origin. Can't be issues on PC, since they release it now without fixing them.

What's surprising from a German perspective is availability on Steam while the forest of Nazi red with swastika flags "adorning" Paris seems to be uncensored. I bought and played The Saboteur on EA years ago and it definitely is an underrated gem not only for the new ultra right and surviving members of La Résistance.

Games are considered art for a few years now, so swastikas are allowed in proper context. Thus we didn't need to get special editions of Wolfenstein anymore lately. Not sure if EA actually considered this and asked for approval though.

You're right but I'd be surprised if EA of all companies made the effort to get approval by German authorities. Maybe it just slipped through the censorship net. Like I said I could buy the game years ago on EA store with a German IP.
