Hi,

I am looking for one of those Emulation Handhelds like http://gp2xwiz.info/
or the dingoo http://forum.gp2x.de/viewtopic.php?t=11582
and now there is this new one http://www.gcw-zero.com/index.html

Does anyone has a clue which one is the best choice or has a better idea which system to choose?
(Open pandora is a bit to expensive for me)

Thank you :)

Hey,

I purchased the Dingoo about a year ago, the device is pretty good. It can play all NES, most SNES, and some GBA. The battery life is excellent in the Dingoo. The only thing I hate about it is the headphone port is in a very awkward spot, it gets in the way of my right hand when playing.

I have played a bunch of different Mario games Final fantasy games on the device.

I stopped using it when I bough a Samsung Galaxy S3.

I would recommend buying a cheap PSP and hacking the device and put an emulator on it though. Or what Smutsig said, buy a cheap netbook

Cheers,

I have such psp but it suffers from using.
I spended almost the fullprice in repairing buttons directionals.
And the PSP plays PSP-Games so I decided to use it only for that. So it will live longer.

And I hoped that after a ~4 years that there would be a better device.
Thats why I ask.

thanks for all answers :)

If Im wrong I can spare another 100$:) Thats why I ask.
Thanks :)

EDIT: I own a S3 too. How do you controll games? And what emulator do you use? Very curious :)

Hey,

I have a few favourites, I have been playing with a Super Nintendo and PS1 emulator. The phone plays RPG's like a fucking champ. You can play all of your favourites like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 1-9. RPG games work great on touchscreen phones, just using the built in controller on the emulator. Apparently you can connect a PS3 controller to the phone and it works as native, so I need to try that.

SuperGNES - Works perfect

ePSXe - AMAZING PS1 emulator, I have been playing FF7 and FF9

NESoid - decent

GameBoid - Haven't tested too much, looks great though

N64oid - Works for some games, people say its unreal, but I havn't gotten to work perfectly yet

Get a tablet or even some kind of a smart phone. I got a cheap Polaroid tablet and played around with it until I decided I wanted something different and took it back. The lack of tactile feedback screws with you less and less the more you play games on it. Start off playing RPGs for a while before you move into platformers. Playing Mario on a tablet without being used to using virtual buttons is a mildly infuriating and extremely frustrating experience.

As has already been said, a cheap PSP or even one of the Android handheld devices such as the JXD S7300 ($140), S5300 ($65) or one of the competitors, like the Gemei A330 ($68) and AMPE CT1100 ($79). They look and feel like the PSP, only running Android instead; which not only gives you access to the majority of the Android catalogue, but also all the Android-based emulators too.

Don't bother with the GCW Zero, it's way too underpowered, the RAM is slight and the GPU is weaker than the Mali200/400 and even the PVR SGX53x present in even the cheapest of the cheap Android handheld machines. Or you could get an iDevice, preferably an iPad2/Mini or iPhone4s/Pod5 since they'll be cheaper. JB and install emulators :)

If you want something with very impressive specs and build quality, the JXD S5600 is due out soon and should be a bit cheaper than the S7300, dropping down to a 5" screen at 800x480 rather than the 7" 1024x600 res on the S7300.

I'm waiting on some proper reviews but it looks like I'll be pestering my wife to snag on of those xD

That's not really a games console/handheld, it's an MP4 player with buttons and some weak emulation support. It's pretty telling when you can't even find full reviews about it online -- that's a huge red flag to me. Not to mention there's no information on system specifications, I'd be surprised if it ran GBA with acceptable performance and sound.

The Archos GamePad does have buttons, plenty in fact, it's also pretty damned powerful and only costs Β£130 (significantly more powerful and cheaper than the GCW Zero) but unfortunately it's also pretty shoddy according to most reviews -- clunky buttons, slow performance, dodgy plastic shell et al.

Best one is GCW Zero but it's not for sale yet. Second one is Dingoo A320. Dont bother with the others.

I disagree about the GCW Zero. It's overpriced (Β£150 WHAT?), underpowered, using the same chipset as in the NeoGeo X and the GPU is inferior to most all others.

If dingoonity.org isn't up anymore, try the gbatemp.net forums. They've reviewed three of these devices, and it's a given that they're going to review the GCW Zero.

Basically what they said above ... I'm using a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WinAQzeyunA

The build quality is pretty cheap and cheerful, I had to take it apart to do a button mod to make the ABXY buttons properly responsive, but apart from that I'm pretty happy with it. The sticks are duplicates of the dpad and ABXY buttons, just a heads up. The shoulder buttons are separate though. Runs GBA and SNES perfectly, runs most PSX titles. Haven't tried N64 yet.

Im not that practical. So if I tear something apart it will be and stay broke forever...

Is it possible to buy it without that flaw?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nah, I wouldn't expect them to fix it - they'll iterate by bringing out a new model. Worth keeping an eye out for the next one if you're interested; one without the need to manually adjust it.

I don't really know why people are recommending the Dingoo in this thread - the emulation for SNES level onwards is pretty glitchy and hit-or-miss. Most of these new AllWinner style cheapo android devices are better than the Dingoo in this regard out of the box, and drawing on the android market of apps you tend to have more choice and people actively working on them - with a larger audience to boot.

Eh, to each their own I guess.

The BiTT looks really good, with a proper A8 running at the right speed and even a full GB of RAM, it's just a shame that the sticks are dpad/face duplicates and that the price is so extreme; €130 compared to, as you said, some of the cheaper tablet machines from companies like Yinlips.

Except there are no emulators for the 3DS, XL or otherwise, unless you run NDS homebrew - and those emulators are rubbish at the moment. It helps to read the post thoroughly ;)

Hey, Lameboy is pretty neat, and SMS emulation isn't bad for the most part.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Still fairly rubbish in the grand scheme of things, especially in comparison to Dingoo/GP2x/et al. So recommending someone to get a 3DS, despite SPECIFICALLY stating that they wanted an emulation handheld, is definitely not the answer the OP was looking for XD

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Considering what OP wants, you're right. SNES emulators really were rubbish the last time I checked, and even much better Genesis emulator suffers from low resolution. I interpreted your post as "every emulator for DS is crap".

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

SNES emulation on the DSi XL is always going to be visually poor, because there aren't enough pixels on the DSi screen.

Get a DSTWO if you have a DS of any type, if you want to have a handheld emulator and save some money. Thanks to this card having its own processor, it can run homebrew faster than other cards, eliminating most of the slowdown. GBA emulation is great except for a small handful of games that have been reported with crippling slowdowns in one or more spots, and I've only had this issue with both Golden Sun GBA games. For the most part, emulation of SNES and GBA are excellent today on a Supercard DSTWO.

All of this being said, I still suggest you get a Dingoo if you can afford it. It's much better than emulating on a DS.

Due to the popularity of these devices within the homebrew and emulation community, there are many third-party volunteer developers for these devices.
