Was actually looking at Offenbach / Infernal Galop operetta, (due to the can-can description) but I may be off.

Leaving it here in case it helps :

The Infernal Galop from Act II, Scene 2, is famous outside classical circles as the music for the "Can-can" (to the extent that the tune is widely, but erroneously, called "Can-can") .

PS: Over and out for today

There's also a weird Base-4 hidden in the main description, but it's rather strange when converted, some things in the start I can't make sense of and then just a bunch of zeroes.

Permalink

I thought it was Hex? Which then translates into Binary. Which then doesn't make any sense (my comment above you).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hex is base-16, all numbers are between 0 and 3, so should be base-4, but I can't make sense of it.

Oh, wait, you're right. It's hex for a binary. That makes sense why it's only 0-3 then.

Try separate it into pairs, you get multiple sets of 8 pairs of 30 and 31 (0 and 1 in hex), with 20 (space) in between.

The thing that throws it off is the evenly spaced letter pattern, unless he's purposely made it look like that.

Nopes, tried rail fence cipher, it's the right way of writing it for that, but couldn't get anything out of it. Perhaps I'm missing something, here are my findings:

 p g y p u h n i s v y c
  d o k i a o

If it's pre-5, we're on the wrong path using the code from the OP.

Yep. I think the passwords are what we need to focus on now, not the hidden text in OP. Perhaps the hidden code in GAs is password 2? But I don't know any ciphering method with asterisks :(

And where are those whitelist? Maybe the WL GA has something useful?

We can ask for exclusive hints in there. oligovore already made a question about this stage, so I think we should wait for that reply.

Should we ask what is the cipher needed?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm thinking that there's more than one cipher needed. Probably two or even three steps.

Also we don't expressively know if we're on Stage 5 yet, the other puzzles stated which Stage we were on, but this one did not. So if we're not on Stage 5, is the code found in the OP the one we should even try to crack yet? And if we are on Stage 5, is the OP message all, or is that only a part of the password?

And as oligovore sort of asked, are we supposed to have found password 2 yet and is that the hidden GA-codes? Perhaps it's a combination of all passwords, and if it is we're looking at needed at least 5 different ciphers from the looks of it.

Asking what kind of cipher is needed might be valuable though, to more easily see the other steps.

Aye, we're discussing what would be the best question to ask. ;)

But then at least it's confirmed that this is not Stage 5, which means we shouldn't be trying to solve the code in the OP? Because that says it's useful for Stage 5.

But what you're saying is kind of true for that message, which we've already figured out.

I like Nordhbane's idea of recording what we have tried (like railfence), lest it give someone else a clue, or can give a spark, so here is what I have been playing with.

Writing ciphertext as xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx is very common, The issue here is that the text is too short for most cipher cracking to work. I can break apart a vignere cipher by looking for repeated strings, but ctdjy qpgyp uhnis vycdo kiao is just too short for that to happen. The same holds true for Enigma variants. Though it could be either of those things if we have a key.

Most of the other old ciphers, atbash, affine, caesar, etc. are all variants of monoalphabetic substitution. So dropping the spaces and trying to solve it as a monoalphabetic substitution, I get nothing. I could get "of but why thingard to became" or possibly "d havernments pocedal woul" Or "ngthe came as your dentiful i" Basically crap.

It could be some sort of columnar transposition thing where the text is written out into some number of columns and read up or down.
C T D I Y
Q P G Y P
U H N I S
V Y C D O
K I A O

I also tried a playfair cipher with a standard tableau and got dsydv tmkzo skohq xxdyi ihdl
Hmmmmm....... Anyone have any good ideas for a key.

See, I did look at enigma, but I gave up. The enigma machine used has wheels set to AAA, no plugs installed, and rings 01,01,01. Nobody in the history of cryptography has ever used any real enigma machine like that. It like doing a Caesar shift 26. Technically it is ciphering, but nobody would do that.
