As these posts always begin, I’m thinking about upgrading my PC, because it can’t keep up with the latest triple A releases. But i have quite limited budget.

First of all, my current specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 460 3,4GHz, AM3, (3 cores)

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB GDDR5

RAM: Kingston 9905403-511.A00LF 4GB, DDR3 SDRAM,

Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L LE

Apparently 400W power source (or at least that’s what it says on the sticker on it)

and i use Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (x64)

i don’t have SSD

Now, I’m thinking about changing the CPU to AMD AM3+ FX-6300 - 3,50GHz, 6cores, L3 Cache:8MB (around 95€). After that, i probably won’t be able to afford anything else.

Here are my main questions:
DO you think it’s reasonable what i plan to do?
How can i find out my power source will be able to handle it?
I buying a 2GB RAM of same speed and adding it to my current, so ihave 6GB a viable option?

Also, here’s a candy for every bit of help you can give me.

SO i just ordered exactly the same RAM is i have now, to make it 2x4 GB along with SSHD disk. Gonna wait for serious upgrade with new PSU later.

Better aim for powers of 2 cores (2/4/8/16) and always buy a new RAM kit when upgrading. You can also check if your power source is enough, here! Thanks for the GA too! :)

from what i understand, more cores is always better

In the near future yes. There arent many games at the moment that can take full advantage of a multicore CPU... specially the AMD's 8cores.

Of course, but a 6core CPU is for sure better than a quadcore CPU, but not MUCH better. Generally in computers, powers of 2 work better. So, I would recommend an 8core CPU compared to a 6core. If you don't have the money, yet, just save a bit more, cause it's definitely worth it!

Yes but as everyone knows the number four is very unlucky, so four core CPUs are to be avoided.

No not really. Amount of cores doesn't really benefit from powers...

Nobody said that amount of cores benefits from powers. People did say though that optimization and CPU usage by games and software works better with 2/4/8 etc cores.

Which I say is BS... For memory and such there is logical reasons why powers of two scale better, which usualy comes down to similar parts being better and such...

A CPU that has to divide proccessing in a number that is not a power of 2 (in this case 6) it has to do an extra proccess to do that, so it is slower.

hmm... ak upgradnes iba CPU, moc ti to nepomoze, pretoze aby si vyuzil potencial toho CPU potrebujes aj lepsie MOBO, nehovoriac o zdroji a GRACA
Minimalne by si si mal nasporit aspon na novy PSU + CPU + MOBO.
Co sa RAM tyka, tak mozes :)

hi, no offense to amd but my x3220 (4core) can keep up with a x6 1100T (6core)

If you really want to 'future' proof your system go for an i7 1150 system.

for the stop gap, maximizing your current system is good.

but you need to upgrade your PSU first (850watts) for vc that needs raw power.
then try to get a kit (4+4) then make sure its the same speed with the current one (so try to max it out) 4x4gb

Should be upgrade path
1.) PSU
2.) Mems (max to 16gb)
3.) VC
4.) SSD
5.) CPU

FIrst, i have a very tight budget. I’m not going to buy 250€ processor. Even if i had money. I was never into graphics, just want 60fps @ medium on new releases. Also, AMD is cheaper and i’ve been using it my whole life and never had a problem with it. I once bought NVIDIA card and had to change because it wouldnt work. 850 watts seems like an overkill to me.

Don't worry about what he says.

According to online sources the FX processor uses up the same amount of power as your current CPU. If it's stable now it should remain stable.

why do you need 850 Watts?
OP didn't say he wanted to upgrade his GPU though, since he doesn't have the funds for it currently. And even if he were to upgrade his GPU to something like R9 280X you don't even need 850 Watts. I'd say 650 Watts is more than enough for a set-up like that (single GPU). However, seeing as he doesn't want to upgrade, 650 watts would be good for future-proofing, but is ultimately unnecessary

That's because that 1100T is an old AM3(not even +) Phenom II CPU.. The FX series perform much better

there is no such thing as "future proof"

850w is needed when you want a 3 way sli. For a single card system a decent 450w psu should be enough. And i mean decent.... not a noname.
Memory: 8gb should be enough for gaming.
CPU+mobo: i would buy an intel. Amd is kinda weak. Socket 1150 with a weak pentium dual core (G3220) which you will change to i5 4670k after you have upgraded your videocard and memory.
Videocard: i would go with R9 290, but that's probably out of your budget. Maybe a GTX670. You can buy used ones at good price.
SSD: yeah, after you have upgraded everything, buy one. Significant speedup at app loading speed.

If its in your budget try adding just a bit more ram, 8gb is perfect for the upcoming games to go with a new CPU. Your GPU should hold up well enough, and thats the most costly part to upgrade and yields the least results.

You can upgrade to 6gb instead.

yeah, i noticed there’s 15€ difference between 6 and 8gig, not that much

8GB is preferable. Your mobo supports dual channel, so an other 2GB+2GB kit should be perfect. If you currently don't have just single stick in which point just 4GB stick is better.

think he'll find that 2X 4 gb or 2 more 2X GB will be faster then sticking another 4 gb in the slot. . . Most Mobo's function better with matching sticks.

try overclock3d, I went through the registration process (didn't take more than a minute though :p) and made a post regarding my GPU upgrade, they are a bunch of experienced tech people so what they advise should be pretty much one of the best information you can get

Yep, whole lotta people speaking in authoritative tones about shit they read on a forum somewhere. It's worth spending a few minutes to sign up for an account on a hardware site where you'll get a better standard of advice before you blow what little money you have.

A good quality 400W PSU will be able to handle FX-6300 + HD6670. For that CPU you will also need to update your BIOS to version 0401 or later.
But the main problem in your setup is the GPU. Radeon HDx6xx series cards aren't made for serious gaming.
Adding more RAM won't help either. If I were you, I would just wait and collect more money for a serious upgrade.
